Patriots Release Tim Tebow
August 31, 2013 10:53 AM

BOSTON (CBS) – Tim Tebow has been released by the New England Patriots, according to multiple reports.

Tebow played in three of the Patriots four preseason games this season, finishing 11-for-30 (36.7 percent) for 145 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He was sacked four times for a loss of 48 yards, and rushed for 91 yards on 16 carries for a 5.7-yard average.

Tebow said following Thursday’s preseason win over the Giants that he was not worried about the impending roster cuts.

“I’m blessed because of my faith, because you don’t have to worry about the future, because I know who holds my future,” Tebow said. “A lot of times people use that as a cliche, but it’s something I try to live by. It really gives you a lot of peace in whatever circumstance you’re in.”

Tebow’s release was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and has since been confirmed by NFL’s Ian Rapoport.

Tebow was brought in prior to this season as New England’s third quarterback behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett. If was felt that if he made the team, he would be a project for Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who drafted Tebow when he was head coach of the Denver Broncos.

But Tebow did not impress enough during the preseason to earn a roster spot, as New England has only carried three quarterbacks once in the past four seasons.

The Patriots also released defensive end Jermaine Cunningham early Saturday, getting their roster down to 63 players. They must be down to 53 players by 6 p.m..

The buzz is that he is headed to Buffalo, where they cut both of the guys they brought in to compete for the third-string job. Right now they have EJ Manuel (still recovering from work on his knee) as starter and undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel as backup, and that's it.

I thought I saw on the ESPN ticker last night that Tuel is going to start the first game for Buffalo, which is not exactly how a team wants to begin the season. As a Steelers fan, I'm still smarting from the smackdown Tebow laid on us when Denver beat us in the playoffs a couple of years ago. He clearly can win, but where remains to be seen.
