John Bolton: US Could End Up Worse Off If Obama Acts Against Syria
Monday, August 26, 2013 11:35 PM

By: Greg Richter

If the United States takes military action against Syria, it could end up worse off than if it did nothing, says former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton.

Washington is abuzz with talk of possible cruise missile attacks after the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad crossed a "red line" set by President Barack Obama a year ago.

Last week was the second time U.S. intelligence has confirmed Syria has used chemical weapons on civilians in the country's civil war. And there was video purporting to show children injured and dying in the latest attack.

Obama's "red line" quote occurred a few months before the 2012 election and was "one of those rhetorical flourishes that the president likes," Bolton said Monday on Fox News Channel's "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren." "He never thinks through the implications."

Military action, at this point, is "almost unavoidable," Bolton said. In addition to Obama's "red line" being crossed, Secretary of State John Kerry took to the podium Monday to blast the latest actions as a "moral obscenity," which fueled speculation that military action is inevitable.

Any action taken by the administration should be the result of a calculation of what is in America's national interest, Bolton said. The United States should destroy Syria's chemical weapons and kill Assad, who ordered the attacks, he said.

But Obama must act quickly, he added.

"Every day that he waits, every day that he dithers, every day that he looks for some amorphous international approval, gives the Assad regime the chance to move those chemical weapons and hide them," he said.

But even if Obama uses a large military force, the United States could still end up worse off than if he'd done nothing at all, Bolton told Van Susteren.

Obama "has a real credibility problem in his own mind if he doesn't do something," Bolton said. "That doesn't mean he has the slightest idea what the strategic effect of the use of military force is going to be."

It would take a "character transplant" for Obama to move effectively, he said.

"To paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, you go to war with the president you have," Bolton said. "And I don't think this president understands enough about the implications of what he's about to do, or even that he can define what his objective is, that it doesn't put us more at risk of using military force and actually undermining our long-term interest."

That pretty much sums up the entire Obama (mal)administration.

I still don't think we have proof Assad did the gassing or the rebels did. Obama is crazy and hates our country so who knows what he will do and maybe he wants war to be the finisher of our country.

The political right is all over the place, on this.

Bolton effectively advising Obama to not get any approvals.

Bolton effectively advising Obama to not get any approvals.

If the political right had any real sense about it, they would agree that, as a general proposition, the President is not Constitutionally obligated to get Congress' approval in situations like this, but would steadfastly maintain that the President should, in any event, consult with Congress and at least consider seeking approval, and, finally, that in these particular circumstances they disapprove of the President's intended actions.  They should then bring a bill in Congress seeking to give that disapproval the force of law.  After all, just because the President doesn't have to get Congress' approval it does not follow that he can continue to act in defiance of Congress' express disapproval of his actions.

On the issue of whether the President is Constitutionally required to seek Congress' approval in circumstances like this, the political right would be knee-capping the next republican President if they got their way.

In the meantime Cameron is meeting with the UK Parliment tomorrow while our President is once again playing at being king.  The bottom line here is Obama shot off his mouth and backed himself and the USA into a corner and now our men are going to die cashing checks Obama's ass can't cover.

He should have never said the red line remark..
GOP House members came to Paul Ryan to be Speaker. He didn't come to them. And he was everybody's conservative darling back in 2012. So unless 1 of the remaining 240 wants to step up & do a better job in budgeting & negotiations & herding the party cats, then everybody please STFU. You go to battle with the army you have, not the one you want but don't have.

No. But in typical Obama fashion he runs his mouth without thinking and there is no one to reign him in........ the man is smart in his own mind and a danger to everyone else.

It is kinda like those cartoons I saw as a kid.. Like the cat dared the dog to cross over a line and the dog does it.. The cat gets beaten up.

Yep.. I think Ollie North just said it best. Obama got of teleprompter and shot from the lip and now we are going to end up in war because the man has no self-control.
