NATS' manager, Matt Williams had just taken out Ryan Zimmerman for Steven Souza as a defensive replacement in Left Field.
Ryan Zimmerman had just returned from an extended trip to the disable list and was slowly nursing a severe hamstring injury. Williams wanted Zimmerman to get his timing back on his swing...in time for the playoffs.
There's no way on God's green earth that with the hammy injury, he would have caught that ball.
Rookie Souza was fully extended and caught it fully extended with his back toward home plate....he cradled the ball in his glove with his bare hand to ensure the ball did not pop out of the glove as he crashed onto the ground. And HELD ON!!!!
WHEWWWWWWW!!!!! WOW!!!! Truly amazing.
NOTE: Denard Span also broke the NATIONALS record for most base-hits in a single season during the game (184)
