According to the European Union’s law enforcement agency handling criminal intelligence, Italy’s mafia has infiltrated the nebulous “Green Energy” industry, not only for traditional money laundering purposes, but also to capitalize on lucrative EU subsidies.

On Thursday, Europol published a report suggesting that the mafia is making investments into the renewable energy industry, with a special focus on wind farms due to generous grants paid for by European Union member states.

For an industry that is no stranger to scandals, many proponents of expensive renewable energy programs are worried about the affect of yet another black eye for the industry.

In November, 2009, emails unintentionally revealed to the public from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) suggested there was a lack of evidence for “global warming” including a statement from one of the researchers that, “the fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.” Additionally, the emails were condemned for revealing evidence of “determined and coordinated refusals” to comply with scientific traditions through “manipulation of the publication and peer-review system” and “intolerance to challenge” by the Science and Technology Select Committee of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, the Institute of Physics.

Many critics of the use of public funds to support unprofitable renewable energy programs, are citing the recent revelations of mafia interest in the industry as just another example of a nefarious element to “Green Energy.”

In September, 2011, the solar energy company Solyndra was raided by the FBI. A criminal probe focused on whether or not the firm had essentially engaged in fraud to obtain government funding. The majority of the $535 million the firm received was provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), which was pushed by President Obama during his first term, despite the protests of the Republican minority that the program would be wasteful and inefficient.

The results of the Europol report appears to indicate that the opportunity to profit from government programs similar to the Obama administration’s ARRA has drawn serious interest from organized crime. Italian police reportedly seized €350 million in assets tied to one of Europe’s largest wind farms located in Italy, presumably because it was tied to the mafia.

The Mafia know a good con when they see one.
