On July 1st, the RCMP arrested two individuals and charged them with conspiring to carry out a terrorist attack. The two accused John Stuart Nuttall and Amanda Korody, who live in Surrey, British Columbia, took steps to build explosive devices and place them at the British Columbia Legislature in Victoria where crowds were expected to gather on Canada Day.

Charges against these individuals include conspiring to place an explosive in or against a place of public use, a government or public facility, with the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury, for the benefit of, at the direction or in association with a terrorist group. They have been charged under Sections 431.2(2), 83.19 and 81(1)(d) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Seized items - 3 pressure cookers, one pressure cooker box indicating the model "Fresco", a Gatorade bottle and some boxes of finishing nails, bolts and washers.

"I want to reassure our citizens that at all times during the investigation, our primary focus was the safety and protection of the public. While the RCMP believes this threat was real, at no time was the security of the public at risk," stated Assistant Commissioner James Malizia, responsible for Federal Policing Operations. "These arrests are another example of the effectiveness of our Integrated National Security Enforcement Team who worked tenaciously to prevent this plan from being carried out."

The RCMP investigation named Project SOUVENIR, was coordinated by the RCMP-led Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams (INSET) in British Columbia and initiated with information from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. The RCMP would like to thank its INSET partners in British Columbia for their tremendous support throughout this investigation.

"It is very important that Canadians remain vigilant," added Assistant Commissioner Malizia. "We encourage the active engagement of all our citizens in protecting Canada’s national security as it is a shared responsibility."

The public is always urged to bring any suspicious activities to the RCMP’s attention through the National Security Information Network (1-800-420-5805) or by contacting the police in their community.

Note this story, for whatever reason, does not state why these 2 were planning to place a bomb in a public place on Canada Day. I found the answer to that on another site:

The RCMP said the plans for the attacks were inspired by the ideology of the Muslim terror group al-Qaeda.

Also from the Huffington Post, B.C.,

The Mounties said both Nuttall and Korody are Canadian-born citizens.
. The names of both are quite Anglo. That combined with their being native born Canadians opens up a whole new can of worms in the fight against terrorism.

Thus far I have been unable to locate any images of the two though there are any number of stories about this. Perhaps the lack of images is due to some Canadian policy similar to how British police cover the head and face of an arrestee when bringing him into jail, a practice I wish we would adopt.

Could well be. Nice little line of pressure cooker bombs at the press release though.

A British Columbia man and woman are facing three terror charges after they allegedly left devices similar to those used in the Boston Marathon bombing intended to “cause death” during Canada Day celebrations at the provincial legislature.

John Stewart Nuttall, 38, and Amanda Marie Korody, 28, have been charged with knowingly facilitating a terrorist activity and making or possessing an explosive device.

RCMP said the pair took steps to build explosives device — using pressure cookers, which were used in the Boston attack — to cause “death and injuries” during Canada Day celebrations in Victoria and they were inspired by “Al Qaeda ideology.”

Pictures provided by the RCMP showed rusted nails inside the pressure cookers.

“These individuals were inspired by al-Qaeda ideology. Our investigation demonstrated that this was a domestic threat, without international linkages,” RCMP Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said in a statement.

The devices were left outside the B.C legislature where crowds were going to gather for Canada Day celebrations, the RCMP said.

Police said the investigation has been ongoing since February but at no time was the public safety at risk and that the devices were “under RCMP control.”

The accused are Canadian-born, police said, and said they had no contact with international terrorist organizations but were “inspired by Al-Qaeda.”

Assistant Commissioner Wayne Rideout described the pair as “self-radicalized
.”

The pair live in Surrey, B.C. and we arrested in nearby Abbotsford.

Nutall has a 2010 conviction for possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, among other criminal convictions, the Vancouver Sun reports.

The RCMP said the arrests have been made in relation to project SOUVENIR, a national security investigation co-ordinated by a RCMP-led Integrated National Security Enforcement Team. ...
