U.S. Open Thread
« on: June 11, 2013, 01:18:01 pm »
It doesn't look like we're off to a very good start:

The USGA might have to use other holes if the rains continue at Merion: Rains from Tropical Storm Andrea have been beating up the area and with new storms arriving in the area, the USGA could be forced to use holes from the West Course for the U.S. Open because of the potential for holes from the East Course being totally flooded.

Incidentally, Mr. M and I attended the Wegman's LPGA Championship in Rochester, NY, last week and practically needed scuba gear. The first round was washed out; we were there on Friday and got soaked, but it was a lot of fun. LPGA events are very fan-friendly. Didn't see Yani's hole in one, but we did see Lexi chip in for an eagle. Good times.

Getting back to the men's U.S. Open:  the ever-present Tiger drama. Of course, most coverage is all Tiger, all the time.  The Sergio spat! The girlfriend and the ex-wife who doesn't like the girlfriend!

Preferred Lies (Winter Rules) and Adverse Course Conditions
Occasional local abnormal conditions that might interfere with fair play and are not widespread may be defined as ground under repair ("The Rules of Golf," Rule 25).
However, adverse conditions, such as heavy snows, spring thaws, prolonged rains, or extreme heat can make fairways unsatisfactory and sometimes prevent use of heavy mowing equipment. When these conditions are so general throughout a course that the Committee believes preferred lies (winter rules) would promote fair play or help protect the course, the following Local Rule is recommended:

"A ball lying on a closely mown area through the green [or specify a more restricted area, e.g., at the 6th hole] may be lifted without penalty and cleaned. Before lifting the ball, the player must mark its position. Having lifted the ball, he must place it on a spot within [specify area, e.g., six inches, one club-length, etc.] of and not nearer the hole than where it originally lay, that is not in a hazard and not on a putting green.

A player may place his ball only once, and it is in play when it has been placed (Rule 20-4). If the ball fails to come to rest on the spot on which it was placed, Rule 20-3d applies. If the ball when placed comes to rest on the spot on which it is placed and it subsequently moves, there is no penalty, and the ball must be played as it lies, unless the provisions of any other Rule apply.

If the player fails to mark the position of the ball before lifting it or moves the ball in any other manner, such as rolling it with a club, the player incurs a penalty of one stroke.
Note: "Closely mown area" means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

Given the current culture of canceling school etc., at the first forecast of snow or inclement weather....you'd think that they would cancel the opening round until the forecast settles down.

For it would be lousy to watch normally great golfers turn into weekend hackers.

The weather last week in Rochester was awful, and the first round of the LPGA Championship was pushed to Friday (no golf at all on Thursday). They played the 2d round on Sat., then 3 & 4 on Sunday.

The USGA may have to do the same thing.

I was at Merion on Monday, and it was very waterlogged.  It looks to have dried out nicely, but there is a line of storms about to hit at around 10AM today (Thursday).  However, it looks like a fairly tight pattern and one that will dump a lot of water over a short time and then clear out.  I predict they get in most of the Thursday round and the course will be none the worse for wear.

As for Merion, it is a beautiful, classic golf course unlike anything they'd design today.  It has a great variety of holes: short and long, with doglegs in both direction, plenty of blind shots and small greens.  I doubt anyone will get better than 10 under over the course of four rounds, and if the course dries out by the weekend, even par could win it.

As for Tiger.  I'm over my anger at him, but I will still not root for him to beat Nicklaus' record (he's not worthy of it), and I won't buy Nike products, either.  I do respect his golf game and love to watch him play.

8:15 and it just rained like hell in Lancaster County.  the rain will hit Merion within a couple of hours.  It's a thin line.  The rain lasts only about a half hour and then it's over.

Play just halted before the rain was really close.  However, there is a lot of lightning in this storm.  I think they'll lose about two hours at most.

After a 3:40 rain delay, they're back on the course.

What a day. Phil Mickelson has the clubhouse lead, Luke Donald's the leader on the course, but due to weather delays a lot of guys haven't completed their first round. Tiger Woods grimaces and grabs his left wrist every time he has to hit out of the rough, and overall is having a pretty lousy round. Should be interesting tomorrow, with much better weather.

Go Spurs!

By the end of the second round, anything between even par and 5 over will be a good score.  Merion ain't no librarian.

Phil Mickelson goes into the final round at -1, a one-stroke lead over Schwartzel, Mahan and Stricker. Merion is chewing them up and spitting them out. Sergio had a 10 on #15 yesterday and shot 75, but that still was better  than Woods' 76.

This is very compelling golf.  No course architect would design a course like Merion today.  Typically, they'd bulldoze down all the high points and eliminate the blind shots.  They'd place the tees in more "strategic" positions and ignore the distance from green to tee (since everyone today plays out of golf carts).  I think course designers ought to take a look at Merion and see how a great course can be created without tinkering with the land too much, and embracing the "flaws" the land yields.

Most designers today are trying to adjust their courses to today's game.  Maybe they should go back to the tried and true method: grow the rough and mow down the greens.  The best golfer will ultimately emerge when that happens.

I honestly don't know who to root for today.  I'd love to see young Rickey Fowler break through.  I'd like to see Steve Stricker and/or Luke Donald get the major each of them deserves.  And I'd be very pleased if Phil Mickelson finally got that US Open that has so eluded him.

I'll be glued to the TV this afternoon.

Before the event, the Golf Channel "experts" asked the Merion superintendent how he'd feel about a -15 tournament. He laughingly interrupted, "It's not going to happen." Sho 'nuff.

"folks were concerned that modern technology had made courses like Merion OBSOLETE."
Heh...as long as they can shrink fairways to the width of a sidewalk and stick pins in places where they do, Merion will always be competitive.
As to Justin, DITTO. He was the best player, made birdies, hit fairways, didn't make big mistakes and finished the last two holes in style.
