Explosions and gunfire heard near Kabul airport
Breaking news

Suspected militants have launched an attack close to the main airport in the Afghan capital, Kabul, security forces say.

Witnesses reported the sound of explosions and gunfire coming from the airport shortly after dawn.

It is not known if there are any casualties.

The airport is home to a large Nato-led military base. One report said the US embassy in Kabul had sounded its "duck and cover" alarm.

The embassy also announced on loudspeakers that the alarm was not a drill, AFP news agency said.

Explosions Heard From NATO Site at Afghan Airport
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

KABUL, Afghanistan — Large explosions were heard around dawn Monday at the military side of Kabul's international airport, which houses a NATO headquarters, but the cause was not immediately clear.

Insurgents in Afghanistan usually carry out their attacks in the early morning.

The head of the Kabul police criminal investigation division, Gen. Mohammad Zahir, said that an "incident has occurred at Kabul airport" and that police were headed to the scene.

The explosions began about 4:20 a.m. and residents heard what sounded like a dozen explosions coming from the direction of the military's facilities. They said the explosions sounded like rocket-propelled grenades along with automatic weapons fire.

The U.S.-led NATO coalition's Joint Command headquarters at the airport runs the day-to-day operations of the nearly 12-year-old war against insurgents. The airport's military side is also used for NATO transport and other aircraft.

"It started just after dawn prayers and I counted about a dozen explosions, mostly RPG fire, coming from the airport," said Emayatullah, who lives next to the airport. Like many Afghans he uses only one name.

The International Assistance Force's Joint Command said it was aware of reports of an attack, but had no further details.

Explosions heard at Kabul military airport

KABUL, Afghanistan Large explosions are being heard coming from the military side of Kabul international airport, which houses a NATO facilities.

The explosions and gunfire began about 4:30 a.m. Monday. Some reports said that the explosions hit NATO headquarters, but an ISAF spokesman rejected that report.

Kabul police spokesman, Hashmat Stanikzai, told CBS News' Ahmad Mukhtar that a group of insurgents took position in one of the buildings under construction to target the airport and other facilities. It is unclear if the NATO headquarters in the vicinity were hit or even targeted.

The U.S.-led NATO coalition's Joint Command headquarters at the airport runs the day-to-day operations of the nearly 12-year-old war against an insurgency in Afghanistan. The airport's military side is also used for NATO transport and other aircraft.

This is a developing story.
