On Monday, Rep. Nita Lowey (D-NY) of the House Appropriations Subcommittee asked acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel and inspector general J. Russell George if there was any evidence of White House involvement in the IRS’ targeting of conservative non-profit applicants, or evidence of political appointees involved in anti-conservative action. Both Werfel and George denied any evidence to that effect.

Lowey summarized that “made a series of incredibly bad decisions which reflect poorly on management.” But J. Russell George added that the investigation had not concluded, and that it would continue “where the facts lead us.” George said, “When this first occurred…corrective action was ordered, but subsequent to that, people in the determinations unit reverted back.”

Lowey then launched into a rant about the Citizens United decision that allowed 501(c)4 organizations not to disclose donors. She said that somehow IRS malfeasance was the result of increased applications and insufficient IRS funding.
