A report issued by McClatchy Friday indicates that the IRS targeting of conservatives went much further than first reported. Strong evidence has been presented indicating a government vendetta against conservatives that led to gross violations of Constitutional law and principles.
At the same time that the report was being issued by McClatchy, Breitbart reported that the IRS had ignored a deadline set by Congress to turn over documents and information related to the Congressional investigation into corruption.
The Senate Finance Committee had given the IRS until Friday afternoon to answer specific questions it had submitted to the agency related to its practice of harassing the Tea Party, conservative groups, and evangelical Christian organizations. But the agency failed to turn in the required information.
But the information that has already been received and reported paints a disturbing picture of how the federal government viewed and treated conservative and evangelical groups, particularly after the 2008 presidential election and in some cases before that.
For example, a pro-life group seeking tax exempt status was told by the IRS that they must promise not to picket outside any office of Planned Parenthood. Citizens in Texas were subjected to audits after a group they joined, a voting rights organization, had applied for tax exempt status. A retired military veteran who joined various conservative activist groups was told by the IRS that his church donations were going to be challenged by the agency.
The latest reports concerning conservative harassment by the IRS reveal that the agency engaged in much more than delay tactics aimed at conservative groups. The IRS targeted individuals, indicating an underlying agency vendetta against individual citizens who would dare join Tea Party groups, patriot organizations, or donate to churches.
Planned Parenthood enjoys full tax exempt status from the IRS, yet receives millions of dollars each year in taxpayer funds to operate. The agency also performs more abortions than any organization in America. Yet the IRS was not willing to grant the same tax exemption Planned Parenthood enjoys to conservative, pro-life groups.
Thus, a picture is emerging of the IRS as a rogue, politically motivated, and frankly, dangerous arm of the federal government. For a government agency to target and harass citizens based on ideological and political belief is one of the most dangerous things a government entity can do and fits perfectly the Framers' definition of "tyranny."
It is time for citizens to demand that the IRS be abolished and a flat tax implemented in place of the current hodgepodge of laws regarding a "graduated income tax." The actions of the IRS only prove that an organization that is big enough to manage the current tax system is a direct, lethal danger to liberty and the rights of citizens.
