I know most of you have heard the story about how he wanted to serve (he was 34 at the time, so he didn't have to) but the film studio did everything within their power to stop him-- and they succeeded. So, out of guilt, that's why he built his career on the All-American hero archetype. He and Jimmy Stewart (a man who actually did serve, and valiantly) were very close friends.
