Did Feb. 2010 Austin Plane Crash Prompt IRS Scandal?

In a speech on national security today, President Barack Obama made a bizarre reference to an incident that occurred in Austin, TX on February 18, 2010 when a pilot deliberately crashed a small aircraft into an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) building, killing himself as well as an IRS employee, and injuring many others.

At the time, the media blamed the attack on the Tea Party--the first of many false accusations. The New York Times, among other mainstream outlets, wondered whether the pilot was "the first Tea Party terrorist."

It was just a few weeks later, in March 2010, that the IRS began targeting the Tea Party, according to the report of the Treasure Inspector General for Tax Administration....

...the Inspector General's report notes that the start of the scandal began with an email on Feb. 25, 2010, while the New York Times post blaming the Tea Party was posted on February 23, 2010...

As a reminder, in Stack's suicide note he posted before crashing the plane, it is pretty clear he was no Tea Partier but had Communist sympathies; quoting the Communist manifesto in several places.

Here is an article in The Atlantic with a lot more detail. It seems to me what this could have been was not a reaction to the plane crash but a coordinated media attack along with the IRS attack, in order to demonize the Tea Party. Look at all the events and talking points that transpired around the same time. They saw the plane crash and immediately added it to the talking points.

Quote

..There was a big David Barstow piece in the New York Times on Feb. 12, 2010, examining the political aspirations of Tea Party and other groups: "Tea Party Lights Fuse for Rebellion on Right." Within the first five paragraphs, it mentions the Tea Party, the Sandpoint Tea Party Patriots, Friends for Liberty, Glenn Beck's 9/12 Project, the John Birch Society, and Oath Keepers, described as "a new player in a resurgent militia movement." ..

..What else happened in February 2010? The first National Tea Party Convention in Nashville, Tenn., featuring a major speech by Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice-presidential nominee. The New York Times lede on that story, published on Feb. 6: "As Sarah Palin left the stage at the inaugural National Tea Party Convention here Saturday night, the crowd erupted into chants of 'Run Sarah Run!'" The headline? "Palin Assails Obama at Tea Party Meeting." More suggestions of active electoral political activity.

..and just read the comments in that Atlantic article to see how the left still believes it was either a Tea Party attack or something they would do. Their world view is backwards.
