Persons of Unknown Ethnic Extraction Launch "Frenzied" Machete Attack in Suspected Terrorist Case in London

Two men have been shot (but not necessarily killed) following a "frenzied" machete attack on a third man, a soldier from a nearby barracks, who died from wounds sustained in the attack.

Police shot the attackers.

Earlier, police had refused comment on whether or not this was a terrorism attack (i.e., more Islamic "lone wolves," who now seem to be operating in duos). Which of course meant it was precisely that.

The government is now treating the attack as suspected terrorism.

The above is what I got from the "Key Points" section of a BBC report on the matter. I rewrote it so that I didn't have to link them. A "Key Points" digest is supposed to contain the most noteworthy parts of the report, right?

But now I see the Daily Mail is reporting the story.

They're a tiny bit more forthcoming with actual facts-- such as the fact that the dead soldier was beheaded in the attack.

One of the attackers also offered this Motive of Unknowable Import:

    Video filmed by an onlooker and broadcast by ITV News shows a man with his hands covered in blood and holding a bloodied knife and machete. He says in a London accent: “I apologise that women had to witness that, but in our lands our women have to see the same thing.

    “You people will never be safe. Remove your Government, they don’t care about you.”

    He then walks off, still carrying his weapons, back towards the body of the victim who is lying in the middle of the road.

    In other parts of the video, said to be too shocking to show, it is claimed he says: “This British soldier is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

Here's another alarming fact:

    One witness, who declined to be named, tells Jasper Copping the attackers were "praying like it was a sacrifice" and "making people take videos".

And:

    The attackers shouted "Allahu Akbar" (the Arabic expression meaning "God is Great"), according to Whitehall sources - BBC News.

The BBC "Key Points" contains none of this. Apparently if one scrolls down to the non- key points, one might find additional non-key information like that the men shouted "Allahu Akbar," but apparently that didn't make the "key points" cut.


Why would the BBC suppress a key, unavoidable facts like that?

Editor sacked over 'hoax' photos

The Mirror board said Morgan would be stepping down immediately
 
Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has been sacked after the newspaper conceded photos of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi were fake.


"The Daily Mirror... apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR and the Army in Iraq"

In a statement the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax" and that it would be "inappropriate" for Morgan to continue.
 
The Queen's Lancashire Regiment (QLR) said the Mirror had endangered British troops by running the pictures.
 
Roger Goodman, of the QLR, said the regiment now felt "vindicated".

Mr Goodman added: "It is just a great pity it has taken so long... and that so much damage has been done in the meantime."

At a news conference in Preston on Friday afternoon, the regiment demonstrated to reporters aspects of uniform and equipment which it said proved the photographs were fake.
 
The regiment's Brigadier Geoff Sheldon said the vehicle featured in the photographs had been located in a Territorial Army base in Lancashire and had never been in Iraq.
 
He said the QLR's reputation had been damaged by the Mirror and asked the newspaper to apologise because the evidence they were staged was "overwhelming".
 
The Conservatives said they hoped lessons had been learned from the row.

Deputy leader and foreign affairs spokesman, Michael Ancram, said: ''Looking at the facts objectively, this is the right thing for Piers Morgan to have done.
 
"The photos that were published in the Daily Mirror have done great damage to the reputation of our troops, who are serving under some of the most difficult conditions in Iraq.''
 
'Recruiting poster for al-Qaeda'

The photos published in the Mirror on 1 May appeared to show British troops torturing an Iraqi detainee.
 
In one picture a soldier is seen urinating on a hooded man while in another the hooded man is being hit with a rifle in the groin.
 
Colonel Black, a former regiment commander of the QLR, said the pictures put lives in danger and acted as a "recruiting poster" for al-Qaeda.
 
However one of the Mirror's informants - Soldier C - said there had been abuse in Iraq.
 
The Territorial Army solider has been questioned by Royal Military Police after talking about his claims to the Daily Mirror.
 
On ITV's Tonight With Trevor McDonald he said: "It did go on, it wasn't all the army, it wasn't systematic but it did happen."
 
Downing Street refused to comment on the issue, saying it was a matter for the Mirror board.

Reaction to Morgan sacking


The BBC's Nicholas Witchell said it appeared Piers Morgan remained unrepentant right to the end
 
"According to one report Mr Morgan refused the demand to apologise, was sacked and immediately escorted from the building," he said.
 
Morgan will be replaced on a temporary basis by his deputy, Des Kelly.

The newspaper released a statement saying: "The Daily Mirror published in good faith photographs which it absolutely believed were genuine images of British soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner.
 
"However there is now sufficient evidence to suggest that these pictures are fakes and that the Daily Mirror has been the subject of a calculated and malicious hoax.
 
"The Daily Mirror therefore apologises unreservedly for publishing the pictures and deeply regrets the reputational damage done to the QLR and the Army in Iraq.
 
"The paper will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation.

"The board of Trinity Mirror has decided that it would be inappropriate for Piers Morgan to continue in his role as editor of the Daily Mirror and he will therefore be stepping down with immediate effect."
 
The Sun newspaper had offered a £50,000 reward for "information about the fake Mirror photos" but withdrew the offer following the sacking of Morgan.

This is the dramatic moment a woman appears to remonstrate with a man carrying a knife following a brutal attack in Woolwich.

The image shows a man wearing a brown jacket and carrying what appears to be a large knife speaking to the woman beside a blue car which has significant damage to its front end at the scene where another man died following the attack.

The two alleged attackers are thought to have waited around for 20 minutes until Metropolitan Police officers arrived and then tried to attack them - but were swiftly shot by armed policemen, including a woman.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe tonight confirmed two men had been arrested and officers from the counter-terrorist unit were leading the investigation into the killing.

In his defense, regular, organized terror attacks are not exactly new to us. I will bet if I walk past the barracks today there will be some flowers placed and everyone going on with their lives as normal.

I have a very casual acquaintanceship with the lady who tried to talk one of the attackers out of his weapons - you know the sort, seen her around, smile in the street, stuff like that. She will never buy another drink in her life.

London (CNN) -- Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain would be "absolutely resolute" in the face of extremism Thursday, as he vowed security services will not rest until they track down those responsible for the brutal hacking death of a British soldier in London.

Cameron condemned the "sickening attack" and said it had nothing to do with Islam, despite claims made by the two suspected attackers.

The thoughts of the country are with the victim and his family, he said.

Cameron spoke following a crisis meeting of senior officials, as security was increased at army bases around London amid fears that additional attacks could be possible.

The calling of the crisis meeting Thursday -- the second in less than 24 hours -- indicates how seriously the government is taking what it believes is a terrorist incident. Home Secretary Theresa May, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, London Mayor Boris Johnson and senior police and security officials all attended.

"We will never give in to terror or terrorism in any form," Cameron said.

Chief among the questions was likely who the two attackers are and whether they form part of a wider terror cell.

Both men suspected in the attack were shot by police and are under guard at local hospitals. Their identities have not been released by authorities.

British media outlets including Sky and the Daily Mail are naming one of the suspects as Michael Adebolajo. CNN has not independently confirmed the name.
