A plane that formerly served as Air Force One is being auctioned off by the federal government, according to an online posting by the General Services Administration.
The starting bid for the McDonnell Douglas DC9-32 is $50,000, with the auction set to begin next Wednesday.
"In the thirty years this aircraft was assigned to the 89th Airlift Wing (Feb 1975-Sep 2005) it flew Presidential missions, Vice President, First Lady, Cabinet Secretaries (Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, others), Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Four-Star Generals, Admirals, Foreign Heads of State and other foreign dignitaries," the GSA says on the auction page.
The plane is currently housed in Pheonix, Ariz., and the GSA is offering on-site inspections by appointment. Judging by pictures posted with the auction listing, the plane retains its distinctive blue and white paint job, designed under the direction of first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
The president now primarily flies in Boeing VC-25s, which entered into service in the 1990s. The VC-25 is a modified version of the Boeing 747 commercial jetliner.
