Title: Trump touts proposed Bible literacy classes in state schools
Post by: kevindavis on January 28, 2019, 04:55:15 PM

President Trump on Monday embraced a proposal from lawmakers in six states that would allow public schools to offer Bible literacy classes shortly after the subject was discussed on "Fox & Friends."

"Numerous states introducing Bible Literacy classes, giving students the option of studying the Bible. Starting to make a turn back? Great!" Trump wrote on Twitter.

The tweet came roughly a half hour after North Dakota state Rep. Aaron McWilliams appeared on "Fox & Friends." McWilliams is co-sponsoring a measure in North Dakota to support Bible literacy classes.

How about bringning back Civics in the school? Also, are they going to offer other religious books literacy as well?

If the public school system can teach Islam and the Koran, there is no excuse for them to oppose teaching the Christian Bible. By promoting Islam and opposing Christianity, that would be a real Church and State issue. Because that really would be the establishment of a 'sanctioned' religion. Which is what Separation of Church and State was intended to prevent.

Provided that all religions (yes including Islam) is repsented as well. I just don't think any states should put one religion over an other. In this case putting classes teaching one religous text while not providing other religous literacy classes IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL!

Hold your water, geez. Apparently you’re the one who needs to study up on that founding principle.

No one is proposing to establish a state religion. This sounds like an optional literacy class.

Separation of church and state does not go all the way to the ground. The Constitutional mandate is federal, not state, or local. The acting authority in the school system is the county.

Howabout mind your own business? What business do you have telling folks in another state how to live?

Yeah, at the Federal level, not at the local/state level, unless that state has the same amendment in their constitution.  Also, not sure why anyone would insist on repeating the liberal interpretation "Separation of church and state".

I used to do this sort of thing when I was a kid... Very interested in saving the alligators back then...
Not that I knew a damn thing about it... Ran into a feller from Louisiana some time later that told me you can't hardly swing a dead cat but that a gator would come chomp off your leg... More dang gators than they knew what to do with...

Taught me a thing or two about minding my own business...
Then the feds came in and made griz an endangered species...
Now you can't hardly swing a dead cat without hitting your wife in the face... Which is kinda fun... But she'd certainly prefer walking a bit further away... She's gotta stay pretty close because of all the griz.

And that taught me even more.
Then the wolf.
And the eagles.
and, and, and...

Folks should leave other folks be and let em live like they know how.

And I hereby once again solemnly apologize to all y'all in the Big Swampy for my impertinence.

I don't think a Bible study course in school can be done.  The instructor is going to interpret the scripture according to his/her belief.  As soon as the kid would get home and tell what he/she learned, if it was not what parents believe, they would be at the Superintendent's office with their Bible in their hands.  There is no way to do this and please every parent of the kids.  And, if there are non-believers in the class, a law suit will be in the court immediately.

I teach a Bible class at my church - we are "one" in our core Bible belief.  All of you should come - we have coffee and pastries - okay, maybe that is why they come rather than coming to listen to me.  This coming Saturday we will finish the study of "The Revelation to John".

Bible class in schools is not going to work.

Do you hold that position on abortion?

No, but it'd be way better than what we have now.

My position on abortion is not particularly religious - But rather, a Constitutional one (not that the religious aspect is not also important to me). As a federal matter, there are only two ways the government at any level can sanction your death: Just Cause (war), or Due Process (crime).

Which one does abortion fall under?

In ALL other cases, it is the constitutional mandate to protect life as an enumerated and particular right (as described in the DoI, antecedent in authority to the Constitution).

@Victoria33
Sure it can be done. Prayer and generic Bible study was normative when I was in early school in Chicago.

But more to the point, it is a matter that local folks can figure out as is best for them.... Like opening the day with a study hall, where qualified religious leaders from various churches can open the day with those in attendance from their flock... There is a big enough selection of larger churches in most towns to where smaller churches and gatherings that did not qualify (according to school poulations respectively) could band together in selection, or share the load with larger churches... All very much voluntary, all very distributed, with those not fitting or abstaining going to a regular study hall sponsored only by the school.

There now... no poor little children having to bear anything but what their parents would have them bear... no one's rights violated, and even separation of church and state, except for the venue itself...

But I went to a Bible Class at my Church (Episcopal) and we almost came to blows at times , so... it's iffy.

Exactly. We had a course on religions of the world, which also included Christianity, when I was in school. Considering I was at a Catholic School for my Junior and Senior years, even Catholicism was taught about, warts and all, (those warts being what the Protestants were protesting), and together, Christianity.

Of course, nowadays that would be spun as the evil Christians going out and converting people like decent heathens (Picts, Vikings, Celts and others) and snapping up land from those poor downtrodden Muslims (in Europe), etc.  No way Vlad Tepes would be seen as a hero of is country, and Charles Martel would be seen as an oppressor....The Inquisition is already not portrayed as seeking out stray followers of Mohammed.

I wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately, turning people into objects of derision is part and parcel of Alinsky tactics, and, as history shows, often preparatory to declaring open warfare on the target group. By convincing themselves that others 'deserve what's coming to them', people have unleashed horror after unspeakable horror on others and somehow slept at night. There is an ill wind blowing through American culture, surfing on the airwaves.

This is referring to courses on the Bible as literature, not Bible studies per se.

Our public school had this class when our kids were there and they studied the poetry in the Psalms (beautiful!) and the literary style elsewhere.

It was not a religious class, but the left cannot tolerate having kids exposed to the truth and beauty in Scripture.

@roamer_1 is absolutely right. This is a local matter to be decided by the community and is not even remotely a violation of the purported “separation “ of church and state.

separation of church and state

The 1st Amendment protects us from the State restricting our religion and guarantees our freedom to practice our own religion.

That's the way it is.

But that wasn't my point.  Teaching the Bible as literature as an English course doesn't violate anything for anybody, and it is a local decision as to whether or not the community opposes freedom of thought enough to deny teachers the right to teach a particular English class.

I have the feeling from reading some of your posts that you're in favor of the government's restriction of personal freedom and local choice.....

the first amendment applies the same everywhere......that's how it was designed.....this incremental notion that it can be interpreted in a way that applies differently from state to state is just

but based on your reasoning, you would be completely against Trump's 50 state right to conceal carry initiative, correct?

Bible belt thumpers??   :silly: :silly:

It's literature.  It's poetry.  And teaching it in High School is not even remotely the State establishing a religion.

Perhaps a little more time in study of the Constitution would do you some good.

so then there won't be an issue including poetry from the qu'ran and the torah as well as other faiths

If it's literature of a certain faith, then the same opportunity needs to be applied to all faiths......you know this to be true just don't want to accept it

I'm a Catholic.....I went to parochial schools.....I can guarantee I have spent 10X as much time wrapped in religious material as you.....I still go to church.....I just don't buy what the bible belt bible thumpers try to push.......to us Catholics, you're all heathens anyway

You're batting a thousand here on TBR so far.

legally, it wouldn't the bases of the first amendment and the separation of church and state in schools boils down to one thing: Public schools must respect the religious beliefs of the students they serve while not showing favoritism for any particular religious belief.

it'll work as long as nobody says anything....once somebody does say something, a 1st year law student would be able to put the kabosh on the bible class or koran class or any other signularly religious class

You would have a case of every single religious belief wanting their representation in public school curriculum. It may get to the point that then public schools do nothing but teach religion instead of  math, science, history etc.

Teaching the Bible as literature has been done before.  It is not "teaching religion," but teaching literature.

It has been successfully taught, and has never once taken over the curriculum.

As I said upthread..... "The Bible as Literature" was in our public school English curriculum not that long ago, and it never caused a problem.

The actual teaching of Christian morals was in our public schools not so long ago - I remember the 10 commandments on the wall and morning prayer - I remember basic teaching (Adam and Eve, Noah, Jonah, etc) as part of the curriculum... as examples of right and wrong... and that in a public school in Chicago.

Later I went to Christian school, and could not comment on the public system until I was out here - But even here, morning prayer, 10 commandments... I remember when it quit, though I do not know if that was a transitional thing or if it was by edict (as they coincided). It was in my transition to middle school. And not long after that, the 10 commandments were removed from in front of the courthouse. I was there that day. :(

The Koran is presently being taught in many schools.

And is magically NOT an issue for liberals and the supposed "separation" of Church from State.

I may not be in the majority here, but if it were taught as poetry (is it being taught that way?), then it would not be a problem.

But the libs WILL allow Islam being taught and will NOT allow Christianity being taught.

The double standard you should be looking at is theirs, not Conservatives.

In Michigan, I would not be offended... There are muslim populations there that should be able to teach their children as they see fit.

Here, it would piss me off. There might be two Muslims to rub together in the whole dang town. And yet, my children received muslim and native American religious information in school here, while Christian religious information was summarily blocked. My children were given prayer rugs, taught to kneel on them, facing Mecca, and taught simple Muslim prayers as a diversity exercise... To include 'There is no god but allah and mo-hamhead is his prophet.

So cry me a river.

We recited the Lord's Prayer in public school and they read Psalm 23 over the loudspeaker when someone in the school died.

Christianity is deep in the fabric of our country, its education (why were schools started in this country? To teach the Bible), and our history as a whole.

The left is scratching its eyes out to remove it all, but they cannot, because it is too deeply embedded in  our roots as a nation.

That's mostly right, but I think they are succeeding. That is why so very many of our youth, and adults in generations after us have become so embroiled in materialism and moral turpitude. And it is liberal indoctrination in the schools that is doing it. I truly think that anyone sending their kids to public school in this day and age are committing abuse.

Not demeaning anyone... But I would not send my kids through public school, period. I would home school if necessary. In fact, I regret that my kids were ever exposed to public school at all - When I could no longer afford Christian school, they should have stayed home. What do you do when you’re Donald Trump and you just caved so BIGLY to Nancy Pelosi that even Ann Coulter — author of In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome! — calls you “the biggest wimp ever to serve as President of the United States?” You look for a way to appease your loyal but dwindling base of supporters.

Now, what do you do when you’re Donald Trump if, on top of caving to Pelosi, your job approval numbers have sunk so low that your presidency is drawing parallels to the SS Titanic? You also throw a bone to evangelicals and the Fellowship of Pharisees that lead them.

That’s exactly what the thrice-married, serial-philandering, pathologically lying Christian president who’s never asked God for forgiveness did yesterday, although, he didn’t really “do” anything.

 :amen:

When our children were in middle school we decided to pull them out of the public school system and put them into private schools.  What a difference.  The teachers informed us of the changes in text books (especially history) over the years and stated that the public school system is "dumbing down" our children.  Long story short, both of our kids were in the "gifted" program in the public school, but when tested in the private school they were actually behind and had to take summer courses to catch up before the private school would place them.

Now we have 'Common Core'  which IMHO is nothing more than an avenue to further indoctrinate our children.  Jeb! was responsible for that push.

Homeschooling means that the parent(s) that are teaching the kids aren't working full time.   That has become an almost impossibility with most folks since the Obamanation and ObamaCare.  Parents have had to be working more than one job just to pay the bills, buy the food, pay for the healthcare.... and then the healthcare insurance drain on the family's income.   In my friend's case.... all three generations (father, son, grandson) are a product of public schooling due to lack of money and therefore, lack of any other choices.

I agree with most of what you've said, but will side with @XenaLee in saying that some people have little choice, so I wouldn't call it abuse.

I should add that when our kids were in school (they're in their thirties, pushing forty now), there were still public schools with a number of Christian teachers who continued to teach right from wrong and didn't indoctrinate to the left.  That's why we were able to send them there.

Three of them were Salutatorians and one a Valedictorian and they all gave Commencement speeches (approved by the administration) that pretty much straight preached the Gospel.  I know it was an exception even then, but schools like ours used to exist.

Since then, it's gone precipitously downhill and we would definitely not send our kids to public schools now.

I'm fine with this as long as they use the right version and guidance- the 1861 Presbiluthertarianism Calvin Edition (with the post Hobbs translation of Isiah 63, not the pre-translation which is heresy) as written about by Sister Abigal Hogbottom in the Cleveland Ohio First Church of Rain Run-off and Blessings.

Everything else is heresy and should be banned.

The problem for most parents is $$.  I just looked up the tuition fees where we sent our kids and now it is over $13k.  If you have only one child that is relatively affordable, but sending multiple children would get to be a bit pricey.

What is needed is more Christian-based private schools that are affordable to middle income and lower middle-class parents.

Indeed!

I considered Home Schooling, but as a strong Pro-Life advocate, I wanted them to get out of their childhoods alive, and was pretty sure I couldn't guarantee that if they were home with me all day.  wink777

@roamer_1

The bold print is why it cannot be done in schools today.  I also remember how it used to be. Churches were full on Sunday; I was a church pianist on Sunday morning, Sunday night, on Wednesday night.  Church is what one did on Sunday.  The country is not like it was in those years.  Killings were unusual in those years.  Cars were not locked; the keys were in the ignition. Houses were not locked.  Those years are gone and I believe a school Bible class would end up in court and not be allowed.

Lol!   My mother would have made a great home-schooler teacher (very Gestapo when she needed to be).   She basically, single-handedly, taught me how to write when I was a kid....because the school in Norfolk was way ahead of the schools in Texas, and they were going to 'try' to put me back a year because of it.  I was already a year ahead of the other kids, but NAH.  She wouldn't have it.  She taught me herself... and I ended up with better hand-writing than most of the class.  (don't have that now, though due to years of lax and laziness re: penmanship.   **nononono*)

You would have a case of every single religious belief wanting their representation in public school curriculum. It may get to the point that then public schools do nothing but teach religion instead of  math, science, history etc.

well....that's what you are asking for with a class or activity at the expense of the taxpayer dollar....which is why you don't see it

I think that people believe something like this will 'fix' our society is one of the main reasons we have the problems we do. People have ceded personal responsibility to others- expecting that schools teach things that should be taught in homes. Expecting the government to force these things to happen.

When these things were taught in school, they were a reflection of society, not something that actually fixed it.

My sarcastic comment above aside, I have no problem with a community deciding this curriculum fits their society (as long as it doesn't push others out for different beliefs). What take issue with is people expecting this to fix anything when they can't even be bothered to do it at home.

If we continued to live these values in our homes, neighborhoods, and cities; if churches stopped being social clubs and started being guides to life; if fraternal organizations were again looked at as a way to make good men better and helped teach everlasting values, then we wouldn't be demanding the government do this for us. It would be there naturally because they reflected us.

I really am not crazy about the thought, in this day and age, of government run schools telling children what their religion means.

4 kids homeschooled on less than $500 per year... That is $500.00 for all of them, not each.  Eldest just made a 30 on his ACT and starting his second semester in Engineering school. Government has no business in education.

Does that $500 also include the loss of income from staying home schooling kids?

Not demeaning anyone... But I would not send my kids through public school, period. I would home school if necessary. In fact, I regret that my kids were ever exposed to public school at all - When I could no longer afford Christian school, they should have stayed home. That's one of the most regrettable things in my life.
Don't think that local school districts won't go after people who keep their kids out of the public schools and homeschool them. People=funding. If you do homeschool, fully expect social services on your doorstep, and if they have to, they will make up stuff to ensure the parents can't homeschool (they did in my area).

Good for you!!  Agreed gov't shouldn't be in the education business.  I know two retired teachers and most of their time was spent teaching the kids what they needed to know in order to pass the 'standardized' tests rather than spending more time just teaching.

Nicely stated, @ABX , but I will take exception to it, as I truly think it is the other way around.

More and more I think the thing that keeps a society coloring between the lines, is the continuity between all aspects of a society. In part you are right - in that part - But I think it goes the other way around. I think religion has recoiled from society into the homes thereof precisely because it can no longer survive in the broader sphere. And in that, polite society, *all of it*, has also retreated, and we are left with cacophony and crime.

All of it is applied with force - Folks know how important that homogeneity is in culture, and folks have stood up to fight this infection at every turn, because it is so important to a culture.

We have not gone down this path on our own. It has been imposed. Every single thing that is the glue of culture has been purposefully eroded, and law has been used to continue that erosion, preventing folks from fixing the problem.

You are seeing the result of that imposition, and the continuing liberalism, beginning in the cities and leeching out like a poison into the countryside... Even now, the very heartland has become infected, and there is little left that can be done, without what's left standing up come hell or high water, as a people, and saying oh hell no, and putting it back the way it was.

But that is becoming ever harder to do - because this grim disease is no longer hidden in metaphors and and things spoken in whispers... It strides boldly in the halls of power. It owns federal law. It owns the media. It owns corporate board rooms.

It pours this vile shit down the throats of our young, taxes us blind, using our own money to give itself impetus, doubling and redoubling with every generation.

People have fought against it for decades, but our own laws have been perverted to stand in our way, against a foe 3000 miles away...

Given their own head, with the law to protect them, most communities would outlaw abortion. Most would outlaw gay marriage, most would instill morality into their community, just like they always have. If you think my little town would not put those 10 commandments back in front of the courthouse and back in every classroom, and would not re-institute public prayer, and do everything they could to put sin back on the other side of the tracks, you've got another think coming.

We cannot. It is being prevented and smothered as another culture is imposed from on high.

Well said!
In this day and age, media set the 'norms' in people's minds, and what is seen in media is a gross distortion of what is real. Those who don't know any better  (young and impressionable, especially) think what they see on TV, from the sitcoms to the dramas to the DIY channel are how 'normal' people live, and act accordingly to fit in.
That's where the problems arise, because their model is deeply flawed, does not represent much of society, and not a model anyone really wants to live with.
You are right that the very viable alternative, with minor adjustments over the past century, is being quashed by decree in the public schools and elsewhere, so ordinary clean and righteous living doesn't get exposure in media or education, just the bizarre and sensationalist stuff that gets ratings and sells soap, or the degeneracy that reflects the 'tastes' of the programmers.

I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump. I ran over and said: "Stop. Don't do it."

"Why shouldn't I?" he asked.

"Well, there's so much to live for!"

"Like what?"

"Are you religious?"

He said: "Yes."

I said: "Me too. Are you Christian or Buddhist?"

"Christian."

"Me too. Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

"Protestant."

"Me too. Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?"

"Baptist."

"Wow. Me too. Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?"

"Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you Reformed Baptist Church of God?"

"Reformed Baptist Church of God."

"Me too. Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?"

He said: "Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915."

I said: "Die, heretic scum," and pushed him off.

The problem for most parents is $$.  I just looked up the tuition fees where we sent our kids and now it is over $13k.  If you have only one child that is relatively affordable, but sending multiple children would get to be a bit pricey.

That is still less than what the State currently spends to 'educated your child.  If the State gave that money to the kid instead, then everyone could afford a good private school education.

Precisely. you see, you only care about what you want to do and all else may be sacrificed so YOU can have the freedom YOU want, and the hell with anyone else.
It's a big country, we live in different worlds, and have different things in our pursuit of happiness.

But that rifle one could order with a check in the mail when I was young is now classified as a "destructive device" subject to NFA of '34 rules, background checks, CGA of '68 rules, and a host of other restrictions, fees, and taxes.

Those don't affect you because you don't want to have one, but that is how freedom is lost. It in't stolen at its heart, but nibbled away at along the edges, those freedoms taken which don't matter to most until there are no longer any options.
Frankly, it is the same with a simple bolt action rifle, except for the NFA of '34 rules.

You don't care to be free, but you are more than willing to have everyone else shoehorned into your concept of 'freedom' to do diddley-sh*t. Enjoy your chains, most people do.

Silly boy. A 20mm wouldn't scratch the paint on a modern tank.

But you see, you have already declared some thing I might want ridiculous.
Where would you say the cut off is? At .50 BMG? .416 Rigby? .30 caliber? .22? A slingshot?  :nono:

It isn't that I want that particular rifle, but you would limit what rifle I can have, from 2000 miles away, with no concept of the place I live in, the hazards I face. I might want it to trigger avalanches on my access road so I can plow the snow away without risking being buried.

There are many entertainments which hold absolutely no allure for me. Should we ban those?

That would dispense with entire classes of 'music', the portrayal of more than a few 'lifestyles', and a host of clubs.
I don't drink, What do I care if that's banned--by your metric, I wouldn't, it affects me not.
Same for the various and sundry recreational drugs, various painkillers, video games, chick flicks, vehicles with less than 8 inches ground clearance, three piece suits, italian loafers, and neckties.

Ban them all, by your metric, because that would not affect me. See how that works? I really see no use for most of those things. why would anyone want to wear a strip of cloth around their neck that can get caught in machinery or be used as a ligature in a dispute? Seems pretty stupid in my world.

But if we don't protect the freedom of others to exercise their rights, basic rights which really harm no one, then who will be there when you feel those walls of totalitarianism closing in? It isn't about what you want, freedom has a serious element of live and let live where people don't unnecessarily mess with people who aren't hurting anyone.

Quote

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Pastor Martin Niemöller

Maybe you'll awaken to the concept, but I somehow doubt it.

Time is nothing without you do something with it...
And money is just a way of keeping score.

Neither is a measure of freedom.

You said: "If you think my little town would not put those 10 commandments back in front of the courthouse...".

Texas has the 10 commandments in stone in front of the Texas Capital building. Some years ago, it was tried to remove those stone 10 commandments. Our State Attorney General at the time, Greg Abbott, took the case to the Supreme Court.

It was our lead prosecutor at the time, TED CRUZ, who won that case at the Supreme Court.  It was Abbott who employed Cruz as his lead prosecutor.

Governor Gregg Abbott for President of the United States.

There was a very famous and much anticipated question that used to be asked of trolls at CU right before they got banned...I'll hold off on asking it for now...but if it looks like that's about to happen to you...I'll share that question with you.

Provided that all religions (yes including Islam) is repsented as well. I just don't think any states should put one religion over an other. In this case putting classes teaching one religous text while not providing other religous literacy classes IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL!

Islam is not a religion as the others are.  Islam is a political/religious/life system that does not allow for the peaceful existence of other ideologies.

Correct me if I am wrong. Islam is the only one being taught in public schools.

No they aren't.

Islam dictates every.single.part.of.your.life.

Family, business transactions, marriage, divorce, inheritance, bathing and cleansing, goooming, dressing, money.  Islam decides how all of this happens.

That doesn't happen in the Christian faith.

Good point, @Sanguine .

Little brain washed leftists, with limited brain power as a result have NO imagination.

That's why they want the government to do everything for them.

They no longer have the power to think for themselves.

This poor schlep (who is skipping school again today) is the product of years of having others tell him what to think and not having the intestinal fortitude to refuse their orders and actually use his brain in a productive manner.

I would feel sorry for him because he's so weak........ but I don't because he's trolling for evil people and is too stupid to stop doing it.

Correct. Our constitution came from the principles of our BIBLE. We have scripture in stone on walls in D.C.  Moses with ten commandments on walls & doors. D.C. is laid out in the form of a cross.  24 of our 55 founding fathers were clergy or sons of clergy, that is why each session starts with a prayer.  Our constitution is meant only for a Christian people, who believe in a God. Not islam.

it's like saying that the country got it's start in Boston so the rest of you are just a bunch of worthless followers

Your post mean's you have zero knowledge about our founding fathers.

America’s founders quoted heavily from the Bible, Montesquieu, Blackstone, and Locke---in that order.

In his The Spirit of Laws, Baron Montesquieu wrote: “We shall see that we owe to Christianity, in government, a certain political law, and in war a certain law of nations—benefits which human nature can never sufficiently acknowledge.”

Sir William Blackstone, who has often been quoted by the Supreme Court, said that the laws of nature were written by God and were supplemented by the Holy Scriptures. He wrote: “This law of nature being…dictated by God Himself, is of course superior in obligation to any other. It is binding over all the globe, in all countries, and at all times. No human laws are of any validity if contrary to this.”

John Locke penned: “The Bible is one of the greatest blessings bestowed by God on the children of men.” I used to have a Sunday school teacher, Dr. Greg Forster, who earned his Ph.D. at Yale studying Locke and became a Christian because of Locke’s classic book, The Reasonableness of Christianity.

Although not all framers of the Declaration and Constitution were orthodox Christians, about 95 percent of the founding fathers were active members of Trinitarian Christian churches. To many of them, the Christian faith was central in their lives:

In his “Circular to the States” (1783), George Washington said that America could never hope to be a happy nation unless we learned to imitate Jesus, “the divine author of our blessed religion.”

In his Inaugural Address (1797), John Adams calls “a decent respect for Christianity among the best recommendations for the public service.”

Thomas Jefferson said that Jesus is the reason we can have religious freedom. To force people to believe in religious views they don’t share are a departure from Him, “the holy author of our religion.” Jefferson wrote this in his Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (1777, adopted 1786).

James Madison, a key leader in the creation of the Constitution, wrote that our obligations to God come before those to the state: “Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governor of the Universe.”

As to the Masonic charge, I view it as an anachronistic charge. The Masons in America did not become anti-Christian until the 1830s and thereafter, long after the time of the framing of our founding documents.

but here goes:

Quote

Improving the "barrier infrastructure" IS building a wall.  Implement the fancy electronic monitoring after the wall/fence/barrier is built.
It's called a layered defense.  Even the head if ICE says they need the wall built to secure the border.  Congress has sat on their hands since 2006 when the Secure Fence Act was passed and did next to nothing to implement the law they agreed to.  Then Pelosi took over and the funding was reduced to a trickle until Obama came along and unfunded it.  Our southern border is wide open at this point and the vast majority of human trafficking...drugs gangs and illegal aliens take advantage of the lack of security we have down there to move north and wreak havoc.

What is so hard to understand about that?

Oh and good fences make good neighbors.

tax cut? what tax cut? 2018 is going to cost me $10000 more than 2017....the tax cut along with the deficit during an economic expansion is pretty stupid......so we are going to run close to the same deficits as during a mortgage crisis when the government was basically shoving trillions into the economy......mmmmkay

My break on taxes was nicer this year compared to last.  Maybe you need a new accountant.  Who was telling the fed to run round after round of QE?  Wasn't Trump.  And while he's signed some huge spending bills...he's got a long way to go before he tops Obama and Bush 43 in adding to the National Debt.

Even in the 20 year economic boom that Reagan created there deficits.  What's your point?

Quick question...where do spending bills originate?

Dumbest damn crap anyone ever came up with,so you KNOW the Dims are going to love it because it opens the door to teach Islam in public schools.

Government can't fix this,  this is for "We the People".   Government isn't going to save us from anything, unless we do it ourselves.

Absolutely true on all counts.

I lean against this idea for different reasons than the leftists, and for the same reason I don't want states subsidizing private Christian academies.  The moment a government starts subsidizing something, the pressure is on to change that something into an atheistic/amoral thing.

It would be wise to keep the filthy government mitts well away from things spiritual.  Ceasar's coin and all that.

@Sanguine

Really? Tell me about the teachings and preachings of Christ, and how we are all brothers who should share everything. Wasn't one of his sayings something about "what you do to my brother you do to me.",while proclaiming every man was his brother?

Yes, since we are all children of God, what you do to one, you do to God.

And, he did require that his apostles and disciples share while prosyletizing, but he did not extend that to society at large, nor did he tell his disciples not to work.

Here's what I can tell you. It's an absolute historical FACT that there would be no USA if it weren't for the Churches that were around prior to its existence.

@Bigun

ROFLMAO! Getting away from the various church governments in Europe was the prime reason the original settlers came here. It's why they put separation of church and state in the Constitution.

@sneakypete you would be wise to pay heed to what this lady is trying to tell you.  I'll be a bit more blunt (you can curse me, block me, or otherwise carry on like a wild savage; I don't mind).  Use that big brain of yours and do some thinking.  Ponder: why do so many people here that you have never met (nor most likely ever will), take a serious interest in your recent health challenges?  Many of whom you have cursed out and attacked savagely in terms of our faith.  We put that aside, pay it no mind.  Why?  Because we care about YOU.

Of course we care about your physical health and well being.  But more importantly we care about your eternal rest.  We like you, Arthur.  We would hate to see your soul lost to eternal damnation.  That's why so many have told you that we would be praying for you (even though you have let us know clearly what you "think" about our God, our faith, and our view of eternal salvation).  Speaking for myself, I believe that you are worth it!  Worth taking the risk that you will verbally chop my head off.  Because if there is one iota of a chance that you will reach out to someone (here or elsewhere) before it is too late for you, then it is well worth it.

It really isn't a hard decision for a man like yourself to make, once you understand the beauty and simplicity of it.  Once you understand the gift that is waiting with your name on it.  Your biggest challenge is to get yourself to the point that you recognize that YOU are worthwhile, that YOU are worth saving.

Be well.

We are in agreement...

I am not as against state involvement as you are - The Constitution would lay such a thing as a dept of education upon the state or with the people...At some point, for there to be a system of gradation, a way to put achievement to paper, suitable for higher learning, I think a uniform or broadly uniform standard would have to exist that extends beyond the local level... And that collegiate level is not the sort of thing that a locality would be likely to provide.

In the case of such things, I will entertain state involvement, still far more controllable by the people, and probably a necessary evil.

But as I say, the standard, in the main, should rightly belong to counties and townships.

I'm fine with some things.  There needs to be a national level grading/competency testing system in place, or colleges would have to take on the effort to assess the incoming product singlehandedly, and probably poorly.  There seems to be a lot more out-of-state students than I remember when I was in that rat maze.

Which is not to say the Federal government needs to be dictating curriculum.  I can't imagine a poorer choice for that.  States are just about as bad, but they have a say because that's where the pool of funding is likely to be.  I don't think the Feds should be funding or dictating squat in the field of education.

Well done Briefers.

I would quote to put this @roamer_1 post here so it gets seen by anyone who hasn't read through this whole exchange yet, and are just checking to see how it ended.

Excellent Sir!

Perhaps that's because their anti-Christian bias doesn't come from a rational place (to state the obvious).

It's entirely emotional, so they can't see the anti-Conservatism that comes with their bigotry.

Ok, still bearing the scars from jumping in on page 8 of another subject so I'm not responding to anyone, but Bible literacy is something people should know.  It should be as important to Jews and Christians as the Koran is to Muslims.

It is always the best selling book and it is a bedrock of society.  It's just logical that people should know the basics of it, which is certainly not forcing religion down anyone's throat or any other body part.

I can see that - But it is antithetical, and in direct opposition to Conservative thought - As much as is possible, federalism is designed to let folks be, and let them govern themselves (as a people, a county or town, and as a state), as they see fit.

And in the offing, it provides at least 50, and more likely thousands of little petri dishes where folks can try things out and adopt that which works best for them. That is what the federal edict removes.

If in fact the naysayers are right, then there is nothing to stop them from moving, banding together, and try their own experiment to prove their case and their cause...

I would not stop them, and see it as their right... But they would stop me, and every other person, by issuing from on high. That is not Conservatism.

They equate the excesses of the Church itself (a huge, very well organized and Filthy Rich Bureaucracy) with the workaday members/parishioners.

Same argument we have with Big v Small Govt.

The Medieval Church believed itself to be superior to all other heads of state/kings/queens.

Somewhere along the way the Papacy confused being the Vicar of Christ with being the King of Kings itself.

And as PJ O'Rourke's maxim holds: "Giving money and power to Govt is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys."

Don't matter Who Your Guy Is, they're Going to screw it up.

That's right. Keep it all small and close to home, as a general principle.

That does not mean the same thing as keep it *IN* the home and no where else...
Where then lies the moral sense of a people?

Morality cannot be kept out of law. Law is in fact an extension of morality. Nor can it be kept out of society, because there is no moral neutral.

The only question that remains is whose morality one would prefer. Taking away one will get you another.

@skeeter I agree completely.  But the 1st Amendment also allows those that don't believe in a creator to believer that without any kind of punishment or retribution.

The Framers and the Founders understood where our rights came from...but they also ensured those that don't believe in a creator would be allowed to enjoy those same liberties and freedoms.

Within the context of good order - And that is where you will run into trouble. Order implies/dictates morality, and morality demands an ethos. We are a nation of laws, that is true, but those laws necessarily reflect ethics, and without naming that, you will inevitably wind up in moral relativism.

So it is well to proclaim men free to believe as they will - but in order to have a nation, they must act in unison ethically, or there is no law, and no liberty.

Thus it is yet necessary to define that ethos  and where it comes from, believe it or not.

All laws are ultimately a reflection of someone's moral code, whether it is protecting pedestrians by prohibiting jaywalking, or by granting them right of way on all streets and highways.  The purpose of our Founding Fathers was to make it possible for the members of a society to come together and establish a moral code under which they choose to live.

Right, but that can only be achieved through a shared ethos. Otherwise, like the Tower of Babel, what results is divisiveness and confusion (like we are experiencing now).

you're struggling with the language......I never said that

but here goes:

immigration? It's problem but trump is too stupid to work with congress to generate a solution. do we need a whole wall? no....but improving barrier infrastructure would have my vote
tax cut? what tax cut? 2018 is going to cost me $10000 more than 2017....the tax cut along with the deficit during an economic expansion is pretty stupid......so we are going to run close to the same deficits as during a mortgage crisis when the government was basically shoving trillions into the economy......mmmmkay
foreign policy? it's being run by the russians
i support bringing all military home from the middle east and afghanistan...we can always go back
I don't mind the increase in defense spending, but it's criminal that there has not been an improvement in helping vets
pro-choice .... freedom, baby
we could solve much of the fiscal mess by attacking waste and fraud
in favor of government provided voter ID as well as eliminating the electoral college

I just think in general, that many of you here have built up so much negativity towards the left .... but they're not going anywhere .... in fact, if anything, the right is losing the numbers game and there's only so much that gerrymandering can hold back.

Blue;  NOTHING you wrote is correct. YOU are ANTI-AMERICAN and ANTI-CONSTITUTION...while using our 1sr amendment on here. You will lose that. Sad to say, you do NOT understand the reason for electoral college.  Such as your small MASS.  would NOT have the same power as Texas. With electoral college...YOU DO.  You want to go by popular vote? Then ONLY LARGE STATES. would have a say in government. We are a REPUBLIC for that reason. So You are against our REPUBLIC, CONSTITUTION, AMERICA.  Why are you living here?  I only addressed a couple of your points. I can't re-educate you on it all.

We do know, that JEALOUSY is part of who, the LEFT ARE.  That is a mental disorder. Many books have been written about that and articles.  It should be said, JEALOUSY is THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL...not the love of money.  I would love to see Muna's explanation.  Really.

Dec 17, 2013 - A. They all made Republican Sen. Tom Coburn's annual book of government waste. The Oklahoma Republican, a devout believer in small government, said the federal government wasted $28 billion in 2013 on "questionable and lower-priority" programs.

Nice. You found the Bold key .  Let the CAP LOCK go <personal insult removed>.

That so many on here are obsessed with the caps button is ludicrous to me. I type and whatever button hits, it hits. I can't keep explaining about my bad typing on here. PUT ME ON IGNORE if that is so egregious to you. I worry about our country and our freedoms. you worry about caps.  Oh, and now being" shamed" for finding the bold key?  None of you have any manners do you?  I am not part of the collective bee hive.  I am an individual. Not like the white sheet wearing KKK democrat members at SOTU.  Then personal attack, calling me a dumb bunny.  I think most of you have a lot of personal issues, and take it out on other posters.  I TRY TO ADDRESS THE POINTS/ARTICLES stated on here. You may not agree with me on policy & that is fine. Give some reasonable  debate points. NOT NAME CALling. I HAVE ENOUGH ISSUE WITH AUTO CORRECT ON HERE WITH MY BAD TYPING.  GOOD DAY.

Yeah.  Mods got fed up after a few days of his circle-talk, and "Poof!"

Good one.!

From the album, Drama.  A rare album for yes, in that Jon Anderson wasn't on it.  It was right after he and Wakeman left the group (and eventually returned).  The Buggles were on that album.

I think we're the only Briefers still up.

Yes, that Rick Wakeman.  I was a big fan of his solo albums in the 70's, one of which was Journey.  I liked White Rock, which is virtually impossible to find in any form (vinyl, CD or streaming).
