Title: Prayer Thread
Post by: verga on July 08, 2016, 03:03:30 PM
Nancy has given permission to begin a prayer thread.
Initially It is going to be just for the Police officers, their families and the victims, as well as our county in general.
No Religion, Politics, apologetics, denominationalism, or prostiltyizing.

Heavenly Father I ask you to watch over the victims of the Dallas shooting and their families.
I ask that You give their medical teams the knowledge and skills to treat them.
I ask that You bless this country and help us to heal from our wounds.
When other counties look at us let them see You and Your love.

Amen

Dear Heavenly Father, We come before You asking for mercy on our land. We seek Your forgiveness for racial injustice, trivial divisions and the shedding of innocent blood. God, help us amend our ways and our deeds to follow Your will by exercising Your love towards one another. Let us be a nation once again that is blessed because You are our God as we obey Your voice. We pray for an awakening of spiritual revival and renewal throughout America. We turn our lives over to You and we humbly ask for Your healing on our land. In Your name we pray, Amen

How can you have a prayer thread without religion?
I think they mean keep it neutral; don't pick fights over denominations and petty stuff. It's for taking requests to God, not argument.

Dear Somebody.
Please look over somebody else while they do something.
In your infinite/finite wisdom please do whatever you do.
Regards to whomever you are.

I am a day late. Please bless those who perished in Pearl Harbor, as well as all of our veterans in all the wars who never came home. Please bless those who did come home and help them find the peace and solace and help they need to live their lives.

Bless the police, and the fire fighters because I know most of them are good people who only want to protect and serve.

Bless the children because I do believe they are innocent and grow up way to fast these days. Bless our companion animals because they give us so much joy.

Bless our family members, and our friends, may 2017 be a better year for all.

And lastly, bless this site for existing, those who work so hard for creating it and may it never be hacked again.
(and may the person or persons who hacked this site get a swift kick in the tushie)

I am surprised that nothing has been posted in here recently.  In light of what has just happened with Syria, I ask the Lord to watch over our troops and enlighten, guide and help our President and his cabinet protect this country and that their actions will eventually lead to stopping the atrocities inflicted upon the innocents.

Today has been unbelievably troubling with Rand being attacked and the shooting at the church in TX.

I pray that the Lord lays his hand upon Rand and expedites his healing and that he comforts him and his family in this very difficult time of pain and uncertainty.  I also prayer for healing of this country; have mercy on us and help us to follow your word.  Lord remove the wickedness and evil the surrounds us and may we as individuals strive to live harmoniously with each other and may the hate and bitterness in our hearts be replaced with love.

Please pray for my wife.
ON Wednesday before Thanksgiving she was at work and they had to transport a patient to the ER. MY wife volunteered to go with him and she had to follow in a State vehicle. She went back to get her drivers license and tripped. She fell on the concrete floor. She broke her right humerus near the shoulder, her nose, and had to get 7 stitches on her upper lip.
We went to see the Osteo on Monday and she does not need surgery. He is a friend of mine and squeezed her after 5 surgeries.
We went to see the Ear, nose and throat Dr. and she does need surgery for that. She is having it done on Monday morning.
It has been a crazy week. She can't do much for herself, the dogs are upset that she is sleeping on the recliner.
On top of that our foster dog Bonita, had surgery on Tuesday to have her hernia fixed, get spayed, mammary masses removed, and 4 teeth pulled.

That is why I have not been around

He’s out of recovery and moved to ICU. Will need to stay in the hospital until Wednesday. The tumor was sizeable but benign. They are uncertain if it will grow back. He’s possibly a case study for them because of his age. He’s not quite 3 years old. Thank you so much for your prayers. Recovery will be complicated and require other trips to Mayo. But we are so very grateful that God hears our pleas.

He’s possibly a case study for them because of his age. He’s not quite 3 years old. Thank you so much for your prayers. Recovery will be complicated and require other trips to Mayo. But we are so very grateful that God hears our pleas.

May God bless you all. Hang in there, little boy!

I hope the following is not a hoax:
Rebecca Somers is at Detroit Metro Airport (DTW).
January 3 at 4:24pm · Detroit ·
True story: As I sit on the plane, I talk w/ an autistic little girl who has braces on both of her legs. Yet she kept saying hello to me and telling her mom that I was her Spanish Teacher, Ms. Cindy, from somewhere near here in Detroit. She introduced me several times to her bear that was named Kindness. I couldn’t help but notice how kind the mother was to her daughter. She redirected her several times, kept telling her to hold her voice down, and held her hand on take-off & landing. Once we reached the gate, the mother quickly grabbed their things and tried to get her to the front. However, they only got a few rows forward. Everyone could hear the mother say “Hold on to Kindness. Hold on to Kindness.” And would help the girl hug the bear. Naturally my tender heart wanted to cry out to everyone on the plane...”Did you hear what she said? Hold on to Kindness!” I thought how appropriate.

There may have been some annoyed by the little girl talking the whole flight or some may have been shy when the girl wanted to hug them or high-5 them. Even the gate operator named Rebekah in State College, PA got a hug and then a small kiss on the arm from this little girl. Yet the joy this little girl made me think of our world and how we all just “NEED TO HOLD ONTO KINDNESS!”

I talked with the mom coming up the ramp off the plane and told her what a great job she’s doing w/ her daughter. She made several remarks and I told her I knew it had to be tiring, but thanked her for being consistent (the teacher part of me came out). She then told me the little girl was going to have surgery on her legs to correct them. But then she told me how she (the mom) is battling brain cancer and how exhausting her treatments are. My heart sank. I assured her that she would be in my continual thoughts and prayers and how she and her daughter taught everyone a lesson today...... “Hold on to Kindness......you never know what another person is going thru.”

[this is a true story: January 3,2018: flight left State College, PA @ 1:45 pm to Detroit, MI]. I’d love for this story to circulate so we can #1. Pray for both the mom & daughter, they need miracles to occur. #2 Always carry in our hearts & minds to “Hold onto Kindness.”

It has been discovered that I have a what is called a vestibular schwannoma in my right ear.  This is a fairly rare thing and I have been referred to Dr. Rex Sweeney at Baylor College of medicine for treatment. I will see him on Jan. 31st and will obviously know more after that.

A vestibular schwannoma (also known as acoustic neuroma, acoustic neurinoma, or acoustic neurilemoma) is a benign, usually slow-growing tumor that develops from the balance and hearing nerves supplying the inner ear.  You can read more about it if you wish at the link.

I am lucky in that this seems to have been caught early and, from what I know thus far, the prognosis seems good.  Your prayers would be much appreciated.

I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow (5/14/2018) at Hoag Hospital, for a fairly rare condition called NPH for Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus. The condition/disorder is excess CSF cerebral spinal fluid ("plumbing problem" per the doc), in the brain, causing various syptoms.

The single most common symptom is "gait disturbance," in older people. If you or an older family member are experiencing wobbly walking, or sense of being off balance, tell your physician you want to visit a neurologist and have an MRI.

Frequently this disorder goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. I am grateful for getting a correct diagnosis. It is highly treatable. My neurosurgeon is highly regarded, having performed over 3,000 of these procedures.

A shunt is placed into the brain's ventricle, and together with valve and tubing, it drains the fluid into the abdomen.

In hospital day 1, leave hospital day 2. Hair grows back in a few weeks, walk much better. That is the prognosis and the plan.

Sir Winston Churchill:

"A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty."

For those who have been/are praying for us, our daughter is doing as well as can be expected, making good decisions as to how to deal with her deep grief at losing the one she loved most.

One of my twins...now age 31, was born prematurely and required a ventricular shunt before he came home.  Of course because of his growth, it required a couple of 'revisions'.

At the time, the Redskins had a punter with a shunt...which lessened our worries considerably.

Be well, @truth_seeker  :patriot:

@verga, @truth_seeker, @musiclady, I'm so sorry for everything you all are going through.  Prayers and virtual hugs for your families.

Thank you so much @LauraTXNM !

It was our daughter's anniversary yesterday only a month after her husband died.

The sorrow is still unbearable.

Please pray for my sister Nancy. She was rushed to the hospital this afternoon vomiting blood. They removed her spleen and are looking at her liver. I don't have any other details at this point. Thank you.

I started vomiting blood when I took Aspirin to control a fever from the flu about 26 years ago... Learned my lesson the hard way...

Your latest update sounds like it is mostly under control which is very good news.

Ok, my turn now ;(.  My husband's uncle, who's had MS for thirty years, was diagnosed yesterday with terminal liver cancer.  He's not expected to leave the hospital, and everyone is taking shifts sitting with him.  I'm really glad to say that his priest and church choir visited him, and he seems to be peaceful.  I think it's harder on his 30yo son and his remaining sister and brother.

My 14yo son is also taking this hard; this is the fourth death in our family in four years.

Prayers for Uncle Smithy and our family will mean a lot.  Thanks to you all.

Would appreciate a prayer or two for my dad, today is my son's graduation and sister says dad is passing out and denying it (and driving). She is not going to graduation to spy on dad to try and spy on dad behind the wheel.

Lordy, I love my dad, but he will not even think about someone suggesting he take it easy. Most stubborn man I ever met, and Lord knows it would break my heart to lose him.

Some days are joy and sadness at the same time.

As Myst requested -- prayers up for Brett Kavanaugh and his family.  Regardless of how this ordeal turns out, the whole family has been put through the wringer -- including death threats.  The judge himself has said that thanks to the unproven allegations, he may no longer be able to coach girls basketball again.  Even though the allegations against him are unfounded, there will always be those who will constantly bring up those allegations and view him with perpetual suspicion.  He and his family need our support and the best thing we can do now is pray that our merciful Lord will care for and watch over the Kavanaugh family.

His beloved cat, Deimos has been diagnosed with cancer, and Hopalong is understandably sad and worried.

He lost his cat Misty earlier this year. It’s been a sad year for him.

My son Derek is 34.
Tuesday 11/13, he went to the Doctor.
He noticed he had a lump on the back of his calf, right below the knee, and it started to hurt.
He says it is the size on golf ball now.
That day, they did an ultrasound.
They said the ultrasound didn't determine anything so, 2 days later, Thursday the 15th, they did an MRI.
On Friday the 16th, the Family doctor called him to say that they still couldn't determine what it was and that they needed to call a specialist.
They said that they didn't think it didn't look lymphatic, but it didn't look like a cyst, and the thought was a benign tumor, but they just don't know.
On Monday, the specialist, an oncologist called him.
The told him could either take the next available appointment at the Texas Medical Center on Thursday the 29th, or wait for one near where we both live in Sugar Land, in mid-December.
He will be going to the Texas Medical center on the 29th.
I am going to see him Thanksgiving Day, and I am going to ask him if he wants me to go with him to the doctor.
Please keep him in your Prayers.
I may be nothing, but the primary Doctor sure moved awfully fast.

Update on my son.
He had a biopsy on the 27th and the results came back today.
A nerve sheath tumor, but it was not cancerous.
The are going to schedule it for removal next week some time.
The worst part will be the recovery, as it is a nerve tumor, the removal may damage the nerve, and they do not know to what, if any, extent yet.
Anyway, the good news is no cancer.
Sounds like we are 2 for 2 today
I'm sure glad to hear that @sneakypete doesn't have cancer.

Where is your son's tumor located?  I had surgery for a similar problem behind my right inner ear last May and it all went fine but I did completely lose my hearing in that ear. (It was pretty much gone anyway prior to the surgery due to the tumor itself.)

Prayers up and remember us, got couple of boys that are feeling their oats pretty strongly and not honoring their mother and me as they should. Had to lay down some tough love rules over the holidays and one decided he would just leave before Christmas. He is back now, and he seems more humbled for now, but he is strong willed. We love all our boys, but they better understand that this house is under direction of the Lord first, Me and the wife second, and them a distant third.

Holidays were filled with love, hate, snot and tears and lots of prayers answered. Not the holiday you see on postcards, but that is ok. Nobody said you had to have a perfect Christmas like some Hallmark movie.

Back home a short while ago. Have a Wi-Fi device taped to my chest to monitor my heartbeat.

Had a few other mysteries cleared up a little while in this time,so it was a worthwhile trip.

Go see a surgeon about my lymph gland problems on Thursday, and make an appointment with my heart surgeon via phone tomorrow to let him know I am out and can show up for an appointment. He saw my name on the list of patients as he was making his morning rounds this morning, so he stopped by to visit and talk with me around 7:00 AM.

See another surgeon for a biopsy on Thursday.

She's been renting him a nice little house the next street up from hers and her husband's. He's completely trashed it. She sent me photos yesterday - you can't even walk through the living room because of all the empty beer cans (the worst of it is that he drinks that Coors Light crap! ). She said there were stacks of unpaid bills, too. They are exhausted.

@mountaineer

Sadly, alcoholism is a genetic disease, and there is no "magic pill" you can take to free yourself from it's clutches. I am one of the lucky ones that could drink to oblivion, and then eventually come up for air and go off and do other things and never once crave another drink. Given that I have Indian blood,I am lucky beyond belief. One day it just quit being fun,and I haven't been drunk since. I don't even drink socially. I never did. I drank to get drunk. I occasionally have a cold beer after working out in the hot sun,but I have no trouble stopping at one bottle.

You can bet your bippy there are thousands of scientists working hard every day to discover a "magic pill" for drug addiction, though. If he or she  is ever successful and plays their cards right, they will have enough money to hire mere billionaires as their gardeners and drivers.

In the meantime,as faulty as it is,the only things that even work partially are AA and the self-hypnosis of prayer. It doesn't make a damn if nobody else in the whole world believes in the power of prayer or not,as long as YOU believe in it. I have never known an alcoholic, and I am related to more than a few, that was ever successful at stopping their drinking that didn't go though AA.

Whatever it takes, including a judicial order, have your brother temporarily put in an asylum so he can dry out and maybe get into AA to a point where it means something to him. You will get NOWHERE trying to convince him that he needs to stop because of the damage he is doing to his family. Addiction doesn't give a damn about anyone but itself, and it's addiction that is in charge of him right now.

His options are either to gain control over it with help,or die. There are no other options.

You're right. Curiously, the only other alcoholic in our family (that I know of) was a great-aunt, but my other brother has a history of drug-abuse, so maybe the two of them had the addictive trait. It's a mystery.

My sister has been trying to convince the various hospitals, social workers, etc., that have seen him that he is a danger to himself and has to be committed for his own safety (not to mention other people out on the roads), but all they do is give him a list of treatment options and tell him to give someone a call if he feels like he needs help. Good grief. I don't think Pennsylvania law is in our favor on this one.

@mountaineer

A waste of time. They don't even have the authority to do so even if they wanted to,and could be sued if they tried.

You,your sister, and anyone/everyone else in your family that you can enlist need to show up at his next court appearance for drunk driving, drunk in public, etc, etc, etc, and petition the court to incarcerate  him in some rehab facility. Or just put his ass in prison or jail, and include mandatory AA meetings as a part of the sentence.

This is serious life and death stuff for both your brother and anyone he might kill accidentally while driving,so half-steps are out of order at this point, just like HE is out of order at this point.

I hate to say this, but having known/been related to a bunch of alcoholic weasels, there is NOTHING they love better than blaming everyone else for their drinking and other troubles because they will NOT accept ANY responsibility for their actions until they take rehab seriously. NOT drinking is their biggest nightmare,so there is no way in HELL a still-drinking drunk is EVER going to accept any part of the fault is his or hers. I even caught a cousin I gave shelter to one night drinking my aftershave lotion for the alcohol in it.

They will never admit it,but the REASON they drink to oblivion is to try to forget their problems,so why would they want to quit drinking? In FACT,you are their enemy for even suggesting such a thing.

Drunks and other addicts are the most selfish creatures on Earth no matter how nice they were before they started self-medicating with alcohol or other drugs. Once they become addicts it is the ADDICTION that is in charge, not them, and the addiction is a selfish bitch that doesn't believe in power-sharing.

The good news is that IF they can sober up and get with and stay with a program like AA,their original personalities will be able to come out of hiding again. Until that happens you simply can't take their word for anything.

She and I were talking about that very thing, i.e., attending his next hearing and asking to be heard or, at the very least, trying to convince his atty to have him plead guilty. I believe treatment is part of the sentence, under Pa. law.

@mountaineer

STAY AWAY FROM HIS ATTORNEY! Don't even WHISPER about what you are planning if he is in the same building. He has been hired to represent your brother and get him set free, not to have him treated. Chances are the first thing he would do would be to file an injunction to keeping you from addressing the court.

If necessary, find your own lawyer and have him named as your family lawyer, and have HIM address the judge and tell the judge that the family of the prisoner  wants to address the court. Since that would be his only duty,it couldn't cost very much. If you don't do that, chances are your brother's lawyer will object when you try to speak, and shut you down.

Maybe get in contact with your local AA organization to get a lawyer reference. You might even get one for free. Lawyers ain't immune to addiction, either.

Please pray for my brother Ron, age 66. His alcoholism is at a critical point: with two pending DUIs, he was arrested and jailed Friday for failure to appear on one of the cases. My sister and I are at our wits' end. He's had near-death experiences, detox, rehab, and still he drinks.
You have my prayers, for your brother and all family and friends.

Your family would be doing him a favor, by ending the housing. Stop enabling him.
It isn't exactly enabling. He was paying rent, just like any tenant. However, they've already told him to be out by the end of the month and are starting eviction proceedings.

Have you gone to Al anon and AA for any questions or help?

No, @Freya. We haven't gone that route. My mother, who died in 2014, went to Al-Anon and completely ignored whatever they had to say about not enabling him. She'd come home from a meeting and promptly send him a check for several hundred dollars (by then, he had lost his good-paying job because of his drinking). I told her she was only buying his beer, that she may as well fill up the trunk of her car with cases of Coors Light and personally deliver them to him, but she wouldn't listen.  **nononono*

Anyway, thanks for the prayers and suggestions, all.

Guys, I'm having surgery this morning.  It's  supposed to be outpatient, but it requires general anesthesia, and my existing heart problems increase the anesthesia risk.  My cardiologist okayed the surgery, but.....

So may I ask you to include me in your prayers today?  Thank you all so much.

@Applewood

Do NOT let them overmedicate you and eliminate all the pain. Three of the truest words you will ever hear is "Pain is your friend". It is your friend because it reminds you that you have a problem and you need to stay alert to protect yourself from further injury.

Thank you for the advice @sneakypete   Nurse at the hospital insisted I take some pain reliever she claimed was not an opioid.  Took one last night and WHAM!  I'm still woozy at 3:00 in the afternoon today.  The H with that.  If I have pain that requires relief, I'll take Tylenol.  But right now it's not too bad.

@Applewood

As long as it is at a level you can deal with, dealing with it drug-free is the best thing you can do for yourself. The only exception is when it is still at a level you can deal with, but it is keeping you from sleeping. Sleeping is VERY important for recovery,so do what you have to do to enable yourself to go to sleep.

Taking the drug to sleep was the only reason I decided to try it.  .  I had taken Tylenol earlier, but It didn't help.  I don't like Opioids or narcotics.  Don't like the way they make me feel.  There are times when these Opioids don't do anything for pain, but they just make me not care.  I don't want to go around in a fog.  Of course, my friends and family in real life will tell you I'm in a fog all the time anyway.  LOL

I know that this is not the unusual type of prayer request.
My wife is currently enrolled in a class to get her LPN license her in VA.
Her grades have been pretty good, but she is a little worried about the upcoming final on Thursday.
She has been out of nursing for about 15 years now.
She is the oldest person in the class by about 20 years.

Good for her.  Prior knowledge and experience sets us apart from younger people - in a good way.
In my 60s I thought my gated community needed an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician), to answer emergency calls before an ambulance got there.  We had a volunteer ambulance and if there wasn't anyone to drive the ambulance, it didn't come.

So, I signed up to become an EMT.  Yes, I was way older than those in there.  I made high grades on tests and the highest score on the state practicum and test.  Our instructor told his wife if anything happened to him, to call me before she called the ambulance.  That told me I could do it.  Tell your wife I said, "OLD IS GOOD".

I THINK that in most people, dehydration is a symptom of another, more serious, underlying problem.

Unless of course you have been working out in the hot sun without taking breaks to drink water. In that case, the underlying problem is stupidity, and people should just leave you alone to do your thing.

Dehydration is a danger for me because I have diabetes and also take water pills from high blood pressure.  I think anything that makes you go to the bathroom too often while at the same not drinking enough fluids can lead to dehydration.

Don't know if Mr. Nadler has any underlying health issues or he simply wasn't drinking enough.  I have found that I can't wait to be thirsty to drink.  I have to constantly have a glass or a bottle of water to drink from. Waiting till I get thirsty might be too late.

And that is the problem I have with fluid pills. Take them, and urinate to the point where you are thirsty and have to drink more water to replace what you have just spent the last few hours eliminating, and suddenly you need to take another one to eliminate the water you just drank.

It's like fluid pills are a powdered and compressed perpetual motion machine you take by mouth.

Please add Gene Ramsey to your prayers. He is a retired Tech teacher, actually he retired when they still called it shop. He is 90+ (he refuses to be specific) He took a fall the other day and they had to rush him to the hospital. They moved him to the Rehab center but the stubborn old goat wants to do everything for himself and the attendants there are afraid he will take another fall. They literally have to keep a volunteer in the room with him because he kept trying to sneak out of bed. Any ways please pray for him and the personnel working with him.
Thank you.

@verga

Prayers added for Mr. Ramsey and his caretakers.  My family is having problems with our 87-year-old aunt, who has been alone since our uncle passed (no children).  Trying to do everything herself without help, even though she obviously needs assistance.  Complaining of health issues; yet, refusing to see a doctor.  Our aunt though is of sound mind.  If she won't go to a doctor or get help with other things, there really is nothing we can do.  I can see us getting a call one day saying she has fallen or wrecked her car (yes, she is still driving even though she shouldn't) and has been badly injured or killed.   These older folks are of hardy stock.  Greatest Generation or right after.  They don't want to be delicate snowflakes like many of the kids of today.  Admirable for the most part, but that stubborn iron will in certain circumstances  can hurt or kill them.  We can only pray that the Good Lord watches over them and keeps them from harm.

So many older folk, my father-in-law and mother among them, absolutely refused to leave their homes. My mother insisted that retirement communities were where people went to die, and my f-i-l said they'd have to take him "feet first" out of his house. He died of a stroke while putting on his shoes one day, whereupon he was indeed carried out feet first. My mother fell down the stairs and died after two months in the hospital and a rehabilitation hospital, never having returned home. Both were 89.

I hope to be more agreeable if I get to that age!

Prayers for Mr. Ramsey and applewood's aunt.

I take a diuretic pill to lower blood pressure.  I also have dry mouth due to some meds I have to take.  I always have a small bottle of water with me as my mouth will dry so much my tongue will stick to the roof of my mouth and I can't talk.  I found having a piece of gum in my mouth causes it not to dry out - when I leave the house I just keep the gum in my mouth and don't chew it, and also have the small bottle of water.

This problem is written about in my book, Emergencies Happen!  Be Prepared Now!  I have a section for seniors in the book, telling them how to "not fall".  Falls top the list of ways seniors get hurt.

A story:  my husband was in intensive care in a hospital.  I worked at a jr. college in charge of handicap students.  While sitting in the waiting room of intensive care, a man walked in who worked at our college.  His mother lived by herself in a high rise senior facility.  Unknown by anyone, she had turned the heat off and was going to bed.  She fell and could not get up.  She was on the floor for a number of days and when the son, my friend at the college, found her she had developed pneumonia lying on the floor.

She had just been put in intensive care when my friend walked into the waiting room where I was.  While he was with me, they came and got him - his mother had died.  I hoped by writing how seniors could prevent falls, that would prevent falls by those who read that.

@Victoria33

I use sugar-free cough drops.

IMNSHO,fluid pills are the most over-prescribed meds in the nation. There is a limit to how many of the SOB's you can take before they become counter-productive,and you have to drink more fluids to keep from blacking out.

They may be ok for short periods of time while some prevailing medical issue is being worked out,but prescribing them for anyone as a permanent solution to retaining fluid should be criminal. TREAT AND FIX THE DAMN PROBLEM and they will become unnecessary.

My stubborn aunt -- the one I mentioned previously --  was complaining of shortness of breath.  I advised her to go to the emergency room. She refused.  Then I suggested she call her cardiologist.  She didn't.  Finally she had a home visit from a physician's assistant whose solution to the problem was to increase my aunt's Lasix dosage.  My aunt now takes 3 Lasix in the morning and 2 at night.  5 pills in a day.  I'm assuming the PA had this increased dosage authorized by a doctor, but I can't be sure the authorizing physician was my aunt's cardiologist.  5 Lasix pills a day seems a bit much.   And where is a diagnosis -- a root cause for the shortness of breath?  Seems to me my aunt should have been examined by her cardiologist before giving my aunt so much medication.

By the way, I wasn't there when the PA came to visit; I'm getting this information from another of my aunt's nieces who spoke with the PA by phone after the visit.  Now if I had ben there, I would have questioned this increase in dosage.  My aunt comes from a generation where one didn't question the doctor or other health provider; so of course, she didn't ask.  I just can't abide health care providers pushing pills, particular on us old folks, instead of looking for a cause of our afflictions and maybe suggesting alternative treatments.  Me?  I give the doctors the third degree and it might make them crazy, but I'll be dammed if I'm going to just take more pills because they say so.

I guess the question is one of whether you are retaining fluid, or whether the doctor is trying to keep you partially dehydrated.

Mrs. Joe has times when she retains fluid, but the counterintuitive solution is to drink more (distilled) water and flush salts from her system that cause the retention. Urine color (deeper yellow) dictates whether she needs to flush her system, and drinking water, which necessarily increases renal productivity, also lowers her body's salinity and the swelling goes away (urine is much lighter color, too--less salt).
Staying hydrated is important to proper functioning, and i'm no doctor, just relating something that works for someone I know. YMMV

@Applewood

This is VERY important. Is your aunt short of breath,coughing,and/or wheezing? If she is,get her to the ER so they can check her lungs out.

Some people prescribe fluid pills because they think the patients lungs are full of water, and the truth is in some cases the patients lungs are just so full of slime they don't have enough oxygen to even cough it up. Put her on something like Corichdin HBT capsules to thin out the musus so she can cough it up. If she has any sort of heart problems, make sure you get the one with HBT and the photo of a heart on the box because it doesn't interfere with heart meds. IF that is what the problem is,she will be coughing up slime within a few hours.

And "Yes,5 Lasix pills a day IS too many pills.  She will be forced to drink a LOT of water to remain hydrated,so it is counter-productive.

BTW,I am not a doctor or even play one on TeeBee,but I do know a thing or two about being over-prescribed with fluid pills.

Hang on there, @sneakypete.  When people get older their hearts don't pump as well, and because of that fluid can build up in the body.  It's very difficult and can create other problems to address the root problem - the heart not being as efficient - so one part of controlling the problem is to help the body eliminate fluids by administering diuretics.  Also, as fluid builds up it makes the heart have to pump even harder, making the problem worse.  Diuretics are not a perfect solution, nor do they cure the problem, but they sure make it possible to live with the symptoms of congestive heart failure.

You are absolutely correct about the wheezing and difficulty breathing - get her to the ER.

@Applewood.

My aunt does have heart issues -- she has an implanted assistive device as do I, and many years ago, she had a valve replaced,  Back in 2014 we both had our respective devices replaced at the same time.  Maybe a year or so later, she told me her valve was not functioning properly.  So I asked if the valve was going to be replaced again.  Well, apparently, her cardiologist opted not to perform the surgery -- don't know why for sure but maybe because of my aunt's age -- so I guess the decision was made to keep my aunt going with medication.

Thing about my aunt is that when she does go to the doctor, she goes alone.  She does not want any of her nieces or her nephew to go along.  She is very secretive about her health.  Sometimes she tells me things her doctor supposedly told her that didn't make sense.  I used to think that because my aunt is hard of hearing, she may have misunderstood the doctor, so once I offered to go with her to her next appointment to listen and ask questions.  She agreed, but the day of her appointment was a major snowfall and the appointment was postponed.  I wanted to go whatever date the appointment was rescheduled for, but she rescheduled the appointment without telling me and went by herself.    I gave up.

So when it comes to my aunt's health, I'm guessing here.  I think her heart is giving out and medication is not entirely helping.  I agree --she should have gone to the ER at the first sign of respiratory distress, but she refused to go.  Failing that, she should see her cardiologist, but she won't do that either.  I do worry about her, but because she still has her mental faculties, none of the rest of her family can really intervene.  Whatever happens, happens.

My husband is 20 years out from bile duct/liver/pancreatic cancer.   Back then it was a tough surgery, now not so invasive, but survival  is possible and with a good quality of life as well

Absolutely!!! Battling with docs right now.  They are NOT God and often have a preset regiment of pills that they give their patients for xyz ailments, often in a hurry, with not taking into consideration past medical history, the patient's overall sense of well-being and if the side effects may make their symptoms worse.

Note to doctors:  IF a patients is experiencing an 'episode' and the test come back negative; perhaps its one of the darn meds that you insisted that they take in the first place!

Amen to all of that.  And if the doctor prescribes something that makes you feel worse, get on the horn and tell him.  My aunt will just keep taking the drug and suffer the side effects in silence.  Not me.

Please keep my mother and sister in your prayers.
My mother developed an infection in her leg and drove herself to the Hospital on Friday morning.
She did not call my sister until Sunday afternoon.
On top of the leg infection she has congestive heart failure and a blood clot in her leg.
She is driving my sister crazy because getting information from her is like pulling teeth.
The stuff she is telling my sister is jumbled up at best or a complete lie to make it seem like she should go home.

Please pray for both of them.
Thank you

A few months ago I believe I asked for prayer for my brother, who was facing a hearing on his two DUIs. He eventually entered a plea, and yesterday was his sentencing date. He didn't show up for court, so I'm sure there's a bench warrant out. My sister and I think he was under the impression that last Tuesday (7/23) was the sentencing date, which is why he hied to the detox unit of the hospital the previous Friday. He thought by being in the hospital he'd avoid going to jail. Of course, he got out of detox 7/24 and promptly resumed drinking.

His lawyer says he's never seen anyone so completely possessed by alcohol. We believe he's going to kill himself or someone else (yes, he drives drunk) unless he's put in jail soon.

I don't know exactly what to ask here, but please pray for him! Thanks.

He did nothing they didn't allow.

What some people never seem to understand is that you can NOT be nice to addicts because they serve a different master than you and I. Yes,it is hard to turn away from a family member or someone you love, but you MUST do it or THEIR disease will destroy you and your loved ones.

You can NOT save an addict from their addiction. They are the only ones that can do that.

Precisely. Been there dealt with that, and there is no easy way.
Don't allow them to shuffle blame off on you.
Every time they use their favorite drug, it is a choice. A choice they have to decide not to make, or decide to do, and there is little you can do about it.

Their first love is __________ (fill in the blank with whatever thing(s) they are consumed with), and you are a distant second, even if you are their parent, Child sibling, or spouse. You aren't even in the same tier until they decide to break it off with their drug of choice.
We gave up on the idea of a comfortable retirement when we chose to raise a couple of grandkids rather than let family go to foster homes indefinitely. I don't regret that, but it costs us all who clean up the wreckage others leave behind.

@mountaineer , prayers up from one who has been there and dealt with that.

Thanks, all. My sister believes he got picked up on the warrant today, because he left the house this morning and hasn't been back yet, and his pattern has been to leave in the morning, come back for a while, and then head to the bar for the rest of the day.
-----------------------
Monday UPDATE: She was wrong. Apparently he headed out on his beer run the other day but must have had a medical incident, i.e., passed out, because he called her Sunday to say he was in the hospital with low calcium (I looked it up, can be linked to cirrhosis). I assume the cops will take him to the pokey upon his discharge. His car probably will be impounded for quite a while, and he really can't retrieve it because the registration is expired (and I doubt he has insurance). Talk about digging an even deeper hole for yourself! My sister's blood pressure is soaring, no matter how much I tell her not to take his problems on herself.

Another update: sister's atty today encouraged her to call 911 and say brother is a threat to himself and others because a) he's driving drunk on a daily basis; and b) he said something to the effect of every day thinking about killing himself (good thing I have possession of our father's USN pistol from WWII).

Cops picked him up this afternoon and he's now at the jail. His Jeep is still in impound, but he had gotten our late mother's old Volvo started and now it's still parked at the bar where the cops took him into custody. I told my sister to get it, if she has a key, before it gets stolen.  **nononono*

Anyway, he's safer in jail than not in jail (I know, Jeffrey Epstein might disagree if he could), so I'm grateful for that. Thanks again for all your prayers.

I didn't, but I hope your new digs are better for your health. In these parts, the time for air conditioning is nearly over (more worried about stocking the woodpile for winter, just around the corner). But for next year, I'm glad you'll have it. And I pray your new home will be much better. I understand getting sick from the heat.  Western PA is enjoying a respite - cool nights, mild (not hot) days.  Raining today, but I can live with that.  Turned off the air conditioner and am enjoying getting fresh air in my home for a change.

I will pray God will send this respite to you too.   :0001:

We can all pray for Larry , his family and what they are going through.

His older brother passed away in his sleep. It was sudden apparently.  Larry will be gone from the show some.

Prayers also to everyone here in this forum.

Every Friday, Larry's brother, Kirk would join him in the 3rd hour, they would play a trivia call-in game

I have to add on, some information here, just seems kind of private. I often pray for people and don't say anything, it must be difficult to go through these things. I am sorry.
