Senators Pledge To Kill Pompeo Nomination

Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said Sunday he is committed to opposing CIA Director Mike Pompeo’s confirmation to become the next secretary of state.

“I have decided to vote against him to be secretary of state. … We have a president who is anti-diplomacy, and I worry that Mike Pompeo has shown the same tendency to oppose diplomacy,” Kaine told CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. “I don’t want a secretary of state who is going to exacerbate President Trump’s tendencies to oppose diplomacy.”

Democratic senators on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee grilled Pompeo Thursday in an hours long session.

Trump isn't anti diplomacy...he's just not into ass kissing like Obama was.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could still bring Pompeo’s nomination up for a vote on the Senate floor next week even if the committee rejects him. The move would not only be politically contentious, but extremely rare in the history of the Senate.

It may be rare but so is opposing a president's nominees just for the sheer hell of it.

Extreme times require extreme measures. Unfortunately McConnell isn't up to it.

IMHO, he was a good choice for CIA and Haley should have replaced Tillerson.

McConnell isn't up to much of anything re: doing his job if it requires going up against the Democrats.  He and Sessions must belong to the same club.

One correction; most of the Pub party isn't up to it.

It seems everytime a Rat is POTUS we get a lecture about "elections have consequences and a Potus should be able to have the cabinet he wants". It sure changes when we hat a Pub POTUS and even a Pub majority in the Senate doesn't change it all that much.

One very significant benefit form the election of '16 is that must now be clear to even the most obtuse republican voter that their party generally has no interest in actually doing what those voters believe they are electing them to do.

You're right. I fall into that group. All my life I supported the Pubs, more often than not "holding my nose". I won't do that anymore. They have so completely failed me I won't forget. I will support conservatives who have proven they won't join "the club", but no more for the rest no donations, no volunteering, no support in any way. If the Rats come roaring back don't blame me, blame the people who lied about what they would do if they were elected.

They do well imo, the Republicans on the state level, I wouldn't trade that for anything. It's nationally, I've found where people are dissatisfied with the performance.  It seems people are always talking about nationally when they say how dissatisfied they are. The debt and all of the other issues, illegal immigration, obamacare and so on.

I agree, Tom.  State governments can make or break you.  Texas has had good state governments and has prospered and done well.  New York and California, to name two, have turned into disaster areas because of poor state governments.

This kind of comment really depresses me.  A significant lesson from '16 is vet your candidates, work to elect more conservative Republicans, not just the old guy who's been there forever.

There is no third party.  No viable one, anyway, and won't be for many years.

Whining accomplishes nothing.

Wow! This really is BREAKING NEWS. A Democrat just said that he will not vote for a Trump nominee.

STOP THE PRESSES!
