Number of Californians Moving to Texas Hits Highest Level in Nearly a Decade
California transplants take $1.77 billion in adjusted gross income with them

The number of Californians leaving the state and moving to Texas is at its highest level in nearly a decade, according to data from the Internal Revenue Service.

According to IRS migration data, which uses individual income tax returns to record year-to-year address changes, over 250,000 California residents moved out of the state between 2013 and 2014, the latest period for which data was available. The tax returns reported more than $21 billion in adjusted gross income to the IRS.

Of the returns, 33,626 reported address changes from California to Texas, which has been the top destination for individuals leaving California since 2007. Californians who moved to Texas between 2013 and 2014 reported $2.19 billion in adjusted gross income.

The number of returns showing address changes from California to Texas hasn’t been this high since the period 2006-07. During that period, 34,078 returns were filed showing address changes to Texas.

Fewer Texans moved to California during the 2013-14 period. The IRS reported 21,391 returns with address changes from Texas to California. The returns reported $1.56 billion in adjusted gross income.

“California’s taxes and regulations are crushing businesses, and there are more opportunities in Texas for people to start new companies, get good jobs, and create better lives for their families,” said Nathan Nascimento, the director of state initiatives at Freedom Partners. “When tax and regulatory climates are bad, people will move to better economic environments—this phenomenon isn’t a mystery, it’s how marketplaces work. Not only should other state governments take note of this, but so should the federal government.”

According to Tom Gray of the Manhattan Institute, people may be leaving California for the employment opportunities, tax breaks, or less crowded living arrangements that other states offer.

“States with low unemployment rates, such as Texas, are drawing people from California, whose rate is above the national average,” Gray wrote. “Taxation also appears to be a factor, especially as it contributes to the business climate and, in turn, jobs.”

“Most of the destination states favored by Californians have lower taxes,” Gray wrote. “States that have gained the most at California’s expense are rated as having better business climates. The data suggest that may cost drivers—taxes, regulations, the high price of housing and commercial real estate, costly electricity, union power, and high labor costs—are prompting businesses to locate outside California, thus helping to drive the exodus.”

How many of them are bringing their liberal politics with them?  It was liberalism that killed California for them, so if they bring it with them they'll just be wrecking Texas as well.

They are a bigger threat to Texas than illegal immigration.  Bunch of dope smoking liberal hippies with their participation trophy entiltled spawn of satan kids.

That's sad. Texas should pass laws to prevent them from being able to immigrate.

They created the septic they want to move away from,so let them live there and float around with the turds they invited into  Ca.

BTW,I know it is hard for anyone under 50 to believe, but back in the 50's California may have been the best place in the nation to live. Lots of high paying jobs, beautiful weather, beautiful scenery, and friendly people.

True dat. Used to live in the People's Republic of Boulder, moved out in '90. Went back in '94 to visit and the whole place was overrun with California refugees.

Haven't been back since.

Born & raised in CO.  Definitely not the same place I grew up in.  Liberalism is a cancer.

The future of this nation is blue. Young people are more liberal in more numbers than ever before. What happens when millenials are in their 40s/50s? There just won't be enough conservatives left to stop them.

The economy will collapse long before we get there. We are past the debt red line and the only way to fix it is with economic pain.

What we are determining this election is when/if we do a fix, and just how much pain that will be. A deep recession, a second Great Depression, or Mad Max?

Article:  33.6 thousand from California to Texas, 21.4 thousand from Texas to California. A net of 12.2 thousand out of the combined populations of the two largest states totaling 67 million.

That is an infinitesimal fraction, from which to be drawing major concepts about who moves, what their motives and beliefs might be.

None of the relatives in my extended family fit into any stereotypes. Retired career military in one instance, nephew moving as youth with widowed mother who remarried in another, etc.

My educated guess is that people also leave California for Arizona, Nevada and Colorado in relatively big numbers.

Should my wife and I decide to move, it will almost certainly be elsewhere in California, Arizona or Utah.

C'mon! Truth to tell,Boulder was like that when I was going there to hump college girls in the late 70's. The mass migration that started in the 80's only brought in soul mates, not strangers. Boulder always was,and probably always will be a college town, and college towns by definition are filled with mindless fools.

You can say the same thing about the city government in Denver and Colorado Springs, also. The only difference is they are such large cities it's not so obvious. As big as Denver was even back then,it basically became a Dim Party Outpost when the Rocky Mountain News went out of biz,and left that rag known as the Denver Post as the only paper in town. I used to pull security at the Denver Athletic Club sometimes when "the elites were meeting",and you saw a bigger pack of self-serving assholes in your life. One night the rabidly anti-gun owner of the Denver Post got drunk in there and pulled a freaking 44 magnum out from under his coat and threatened to kill somebody that had insulted him. One of his fellow multi-milllionaire trust fund babies, mind you. This was when the Rocky Mountain News was still in biz,and they gave a full report on his arrest and the details the next day. For some odd reason The Denver Post seemed to have missed that story.

Back then, and probably now,you had to get the personal approval of the Denver Chief of Police to get a CCW permit issued in Denver, even though anybody that qualified was supposed to be issued one. The Owner of the DP had one of the super rare/issued to the politically connected and celebrities only permits, but the kink was that CCW permit holders were ONLY allowed to carry 38 Special revolvers with the standard 158 gr round nose lead bullet, and the owner/editor was carrying a 44 Magnum.

Of course it was all spread under the rug and he got off with a small fine and didn't even lose his CCW permit, never mind face a judge over pointing a loaded gun at someone while drunk and threatening to kill them.

BTW,I was licensed to carry a gun by the DPD,but NOT to carry a concealed gun,and it also had to be loaded with 38 Special RNL bullets.

Which was laughable because I got the permit using a altered name and bogus address, and knew one guy that wasn't even a US citizen that had a DPD permit to carry a gun.

Born & raised in CO.  Definitely not the same place I grew up in.  Liberalism is a cancer.

My experience in the mid to late 70's was that once you got out of the big cities,Colorado was a very conservative place, and the people were very friendly. I suspect the smaller cities and towns are still that way. Or the ones that aren't in the mountains close to movie star ski slopes, anyhow. The left has a way of moving in and buying the local city/county government and PD's so they don't get bothered.

Maybe/probably in the big cities, but the young people I talk with from the rural areas and smaller cities are more rabidly conservative than I am. They are absolutely outraged over the way their schools are being ran with the whites being discriminated against, and the bogus history they are being taught.

True, Boulder has always been Boulder, but  noticed the California smell in Ft. Collins, Greeley, Denver, and even C-Springs when I came back to visit. Wasn't long after I was reading about them infesting Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and even Utah. Not just the big towns either.

You are right it was always there, but after '94 it was a takeover and in your face, and CO doesn't seem like it's been the same since, except maybe the NW quadrant.

It sounds like FR here, now.

40-45% of Californians vote Republican. Those tend to have more money, and are more likely to move--at least for tax purposes.

If there is a significant exodus, I think it is those people, not the much dreaded lower income folks, who happen to be liberal.

My relatives on both sides that have moved away from California, to Arizona, Nevada, Texas are all very conservative.

I'm thankful that many of them don't move to the Midwest. They don't seem to like it or be liked here, then again the limousine liberal stick doesn't play well here.

The limousine liberal didn't play well here either until they started moving here.

And, watch out, when they bleed us dry they'll have to look for another place to go.

Yeah, I'm surprised their haven't been more locusts than there already have been.

I do think though Des Moines is done for. It's seems like it's turning into a hipster toilet.
