Hanukkah celebrates the miracle that oil thought to be enough for only one day burned instead for eight. So the Jewish festival of lights is also, in a way, a celebration of surprise.
A temple in Queens got a small dose of surprise on Sunday — the final night of Hanukkah — when Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat with a knack for dramatic flourish, told those gathered to light the menorah that her ancestors were Jewish.
“One of the things that we discovered about ourselves is that a very, very long time ago, generations and generations ago, my family consisted of Sephardic Jews,†Ocasio-Cortez said. These are Jews who settled in the Middle East, North Africa and southern Europe after the Jewish diaspora. They were expelled from Spain in 1492. ...

Cortez is the daughter of an architect from Westchester who claimed to be the girl from the Bronx. She had plenty of cash, but claimed to be unable to afford a D.C. apartment. And she wants to run for president, but knows less about civics than most first graders.
So why not?

I do not support or agree with her in any way, but what she said is totally correct. The fact that she used the term Sephardic Jew vs. Ashkenazi Jew is telling. A gentile would not know this distinction. I'm not sold, but am intrigued by her claim.
As far as all the super-racist homophobic Muzzie Democrats, she didn't make any friends. Or maybe she did. I don't know what the hell is going on anymore? The situation has become so confused, nobody knows anything today.
For example, so many gay people who violently support Muslims, who kill gay people. It is mind boggling? I don't know. Reality in America today is confusing as hell.

'Sepharad' is the original name of Spain, in the way, way, back machine. But in modern terms it is used to describe any Jew who is not a snow White Scandinavian from North Europe. Sons of Esau.
Italians and all kinds of people are called Sephardic (or 'Black' in the language) who have nothing to do with Spain, at all.

I just don't remember how I know. My mind is full of generally useless information. Like @truth_seeker, I am fascinated by DNA studies, but I have known about Sephardic vs. Askenazi for a long time. And, mad cow and Tay Sachs. Moors in Spain and all the way to Holland. Marranos. Ethiopia Jews and the Ark of the Covenant. :shrug:

It's not totally unheard of. I worked with a woman born in Cuba who is Sephardic Jew. Many Sephardic Jews came to the new world as conquistadors and ended up settling in the Rio Grand Valley. They have long ago assimilated as Roman Catholic, but they butcher their animals in the kosher way and have menorahs that have been passed on through the generations as a family heirloom.

Ocasio-Cortez reveals her Jewish heritage: 'I knew it! I sensed it!'
The progressive Democrat said that generations ago her family consisted of Sephardic Jews.
"One of the things that we discovered about ourselves is that a very very long time ago, generations and generations ago, my family consisted of Sephardic Jews," she said, referring to Jews who are originally from Spain or the Iberian Peninsula. "And ... the story goes that during the Spanish Inquisition, so many people were forced to convert on the exterior to Catholicism, but on the interior, continued to practice their faith, continued to be who they were, even though they were pressured to not be that on the outside world."
Ocasio-Cortez, who made the comments after lighting Hanukkah candles, said some of those practitioners fled Spain, with some landing in Puerto Rico, where she descends from. Ocasio-Cortez added that the lineage showed that "so many of our destinies are tied."
On Monday morning, Ocasio-Cortez posted a series of tweets about her Jewish heritage, responding to coverage of the remarks.

According to Haaretz, about 300,000 Jews lived in Spain before the Catholic monarchs began the Spanish Inquisition in the late 1400s, in which all Jews and Muslims were ordered to convert to Catholicism or face expulsion or even death. The publication noted that more than 3.5 million Jews are descended from those who fled the country during the inquisition.
The Sunday revelation was not the first time Ocasio-Cortez has discussed her religion. In the Jesuit publication America Magazine, Ocasio-Cortez wrote earlier this year that the ultimate goal of reforming the criminal justice system ties "directly to the heart of our" Catholic faith.
Ocasio-Cortez, who has become a firebrand on the left after unseating powerful Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley this year, is an outspoken defender of the Palestinian people and has advocated for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict.
A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez, 29, did not immediately return a request for comment from NBC News asking how long she has known about her Jewish heritage and how she was made aware of it.
Maybe she will convert and dump Catholicism.

Shapiro pointed out that Ocasio-Cortez gave cover to anti-Semites who supported sanctions against Israel, like Linda Sarsour, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar, by associating with them, and noted that Ocasio-Cortez was simply following in the footsteps of other Democrats, notably Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, who had made similar claims in order to distract from the policies they espoused that were bad for the Jewish people. He stated, “It’s an easy way of avoiding the question but it has about as much political weight as somebody being accused of racism and then saying, ‘Well, I once had a black friend.’â€
