‘Enough’! Push to replace Star Spangled Banner with John Lennon’s Imagine meets ‘resistance’
June 26, 2020 | Vivek Saxena

Not satisfied with toppling the statues of America’s Founding Fathers, some left-wing activists have now set their eyes on replacing America’s national anthem.

In fact, just last week left-wing extremists — or “protesters,” according to the far-left media — toppled the statue of the anthem’s composer, Francis Scott Key:

The statue of Francis Scott Key, who is known for writing "The Star-Spangled Banner" but was a slave owner, was toppled by protesters in San Francisco during demonstrations against racial injustice.

But this week they’re gunning for the anthem itself (again).

The push appears to have started in New York City, of course, where Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts junior Liana Morale vowed to not sing the national anthem during the school’s upcoming virtual commencement.

“Ms. Morales, an Afro-Latina, said she was honored to be selected. But after the killing of George Floyd, she refused to sing America’s national anthem. Instead, she asked if she could perform ‘Lift Every Voice and Sing,’ a hymn widely known as the black national anthem,” The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

Two days later, Yahoo News ran a report about two activists — historian Daniel E. Walker and “journalist” Kevin Powell  — who are now calling for the Scott Key’s “The Star-Spangled Banner” to be outright replaced.

“The 53-year-old in me says, we can’t change things that have existed forever,” Walker said to Yahoo News. “But then there are these young people who say that America needs to live up to its real creed.”

Young people say a lot of things, many of them patently dumb …

Imagine is nothing more than atheistic, socialistic trash...loathe that "song" and especially loathe that it's played during the Christmas Holidays.

And that's why the leftists are calling for it.

Wow. I didn't know that some people think it is appropriate for Christmas. That is indefensible.

I'm a huge Lennon fan, but "Imagine" is leftist pap.

If you replaced the anthem with anything, it should be Chuck Berry's "Back In The USA".

Oh well, oh well, i feel so good today,
We touched ground on an international runway
Jet propelled back home, from over the seas to the USA

New York, Los Angeles, oh, how i yearned for you
Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge
Let alone just to be at my home back in ol' St. Lou.

Did i miss the skyscrapers, did i miss the long freeway?
From the coast of California to the shores of Delaware bay
You can bet your life i did, till i got back to the USA

Looking hard for a drive-in, searching for a corner café
Where hamburgers sizzle on an open grill night and day
Yeah, and a juke-box jumping with records like in the USA

Well, i'm so glad i'm livin' in the USA
Yes. i'm so glad i'm livin' in the USA
Anything you want, we got right here in the USA

In high school band I played the SSB dozens of times at sporting events. I cannot sing it without choking up at least once (I hope most other nations' citizens can say the same of their nations' anthems, BTW). I do not think "Imagine" is a serious suggestion, but it would make me gag. And since, IIRC, it promotes atheism, it would violate the 1st Amendment if it were given official status.

Imagine is nothing more than atheistic, socialistic trash...loathe that "song" and especially loathe that it's played during the Christmas Holidays.

And that's why the leftists are calling for it.
When my daughter was in high school her class was assigned songs which they had to write about what they meant, she was assigned 'Imagine.
She asked me about it so I went through it line by line and asked what she thought he meant in each, unfailingly she correctly identified each as socialism or anti religion or just plain bullcrap. She wrote her report  which simply described the song as a socialism wet dream. When she read it to her aunt a full blown lefty, her aunt almost had a conniption fit and told my daughter she was completely wrong. My daughter brought blissful silence to the room by asking her aunt one question " If I am completely wrong why did my teacher give me an 'A'?

What we need to do is push back really hard with a petition to replace it with God Bless America. I'm old enough to remember that being sung on TV a lot and nobody belted it out like Kate Smith. But then I can remember singing it in school back in the ancient days when we still Easter Break and Christmas Break. The ACLU and Communists that have taken over our schools and so much of our government have come so close to succeeding.......no religion in schools or government, property and wealth re assignment(accept for theirs), No countries? well that aint gonna happen because the dems won't share power and I thought it was the horrible pubbies that wanted one world order? No too many things wrong with Lennon's wet dream because there is never a everyone in socialism just the haves and those who work for the haves.

Let's see ... we've thrown "God" out the window many times, schools are no longer requiring students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, classroom aren't mandated to have flags, history books have been rewritten to be more inclusive and less racist, we're allowing thugs to tear down historical landmarks and monuments and now the push is to change our national anthem?

Too bad we didn't flip the other side the middle finger instead of complying and giving them their way ... GOD, the Constitution, American History, the American Flag, National Monuments and the National Anthem should be non-negotiable.

Many local stations in my area think it's appropriate to play this garbage as part of the Christmas "loop".  I've called them out for it based on the lyrics and some have stopped...so small victories here and there.

The Beatles and Lennon wrote their share of bad songs as well as good/great songs.
"Imagine" is one of those bad songs that has, unfortunately, a very good melody. Few of Lennon's post-Beatles songs are worth anything.
I think if he had composed a poor or mediocre melody with the stupid lyrics, the song wouldn't have gone anywhere.
I don't even think Lennon believed  the pap in the lyrics.

Agree. and I was a fan when they were still a band in the '60's.

There are plenty of nonsensical drug induced songs in their catalog (starting with Rubber Soul, then throughout the balance of their career) that now are considered lyrically profound. But IMO, profound in a Chauncey Gardner kind of way.

And then fast forward about 10 years later, I can remember being part of a Rock Aficionado group in college, and discussing  Neil Young lyrics.  I about got drummed out the klatch for suggesting he was making up random shit, and messing with their minds.

I about lost friends over a Llama going to Texarkana.

I wonder what kind of reception Young got down South after "Southern Man."
Or if he ever played concerts there...which I would guess he did.

Back in the 60s Life magazine did an article about the Beatles. In it one of the group said that due to the pressure to complete an album, at least two or three of the songs on each album was "pure slog".

I think John's post-Beatles work suffered from not having Paul. And possibly excepting the "McCartney" album, I think Paul's post-Beatles work, much of it commercially successful, suffered from not having John.

What John believed at any given time, I can't guess. I do not think John was a pleasant human being.

Saw Neil Young in '83 and '85, and both times in Houston.   Of course Texas is not exactly hard core Dixie.  But I will say in neither did he play "Southern Man", "Cortez the Killer". or any other of his what could be called controverisal songs.

It's a sirens' song for the young, idealistic, and stoned. Nothing more.

 To be honest I think both of their post-Beatles songs were at best mediocre and many of them just bad.
When I first heard "Admiral Halsey" I thought McCartney's brains had fallen out of his head.
Lennon's post-Beatles songs weren't much better.
Harrison's  post-Beatles songs were better than either Lennon's or McCartney's.

Of all the Post-Beatles solo songs    "It Don't Come Easy" , written by George, sung by Ringo is the best.   It was a wise choice having Ringo sing it, instead of George.

Right after 9/11 it was  suggested that God Bless America replace the Star Spangled Banner. In an August 16, 1943, letter to the well-known author Dale Carnegie, Berlin wrote: "I think it would be a mistake to suggest changing our National Anthem. I am, of course, touched and flattered that you think so highly of 'God Bless America' but in my opinion, the 'Star Spangled Banner' cannot be replaced.  Now some idiots want to replace it with Imagine!  George Gershwin must be rolling in his grave.
