What still catches my eye is the order of magnitude difference between CA and the NY-NJ area. NY and NJ have major international airports. So, too, does CA. NY and NJ have a lot of companies that do business in China, including people going to and from China. So, too, does CA.
My WAG is that the EU's delay in shutting down China travel resulted in people being infected in EuroLand and then bringing it back to NY-NJ more than CA.

Population density.
People packed together.
Factor in buses and subways, commuter railroads, too.
Fairfield County (across the state line from NY Westchester County) is disproportionately hit, also.

Am I the only one surprised by the low numbers in Mass and Ca? Mass because they are so packed together in the cities, and Ca because it is just so damn big.
-
I just went back to the site and Massachusetts has dropped down to 7th

And a cavalier attitude of the Mayor of NYC and the Governor of NY. They needed to act quickly to shut things down and they played around.
We're seeing the results.

This site - https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections - also gives state-by-state numbers. It would be interesting to see whether they are the same, or even close to, what the Sun-Times is reporting.
-
The other day I was reading about the number of false negatives coming up with these COVID19 tests. That made me wonder if there also could be false positive results.
And as for the deaths attributed to COVID19 -- are we sure they were from the virus and not from some other underlying condition?

No, not at all. Deaths that actually were caused by other conditions are being blamed on Covid-19.

Juanita Broaddrick @atensnut
Beginning in March, thousands died from other causes.......but COVID-19 was listed as cause of death. Why? Fed govt. will pay for all uninsured COVID-19 cases.

@Applewood
Impossible to say because the cause of death is determined by the doctor and/or medical staff where they die,and not some medical research lab somewhere.
Add to personal biases the fact that these people are all very tired and have other things more important to do than fill out paperwork, and it's anybody's guess.
We have all seen newspaper reports of people in their 80's and 90's "dying from the virus",and the sad,sad truth is that when someone in those age group dies, picking out ONE thing and naming as the prime cause of death is,at BEST,a polite fiction unless they were ran over by a bus,or something similar.

Since lab tests were not required, one cannot conclude that the deaths were not from COVID either.
Stating anything as an absolute at this point is premature.

Thanks. So when I read 4,000 or 5,000 dead from the virus in New York, I should take those numbers with a grain of salt. Ok then.

I suspect that has more to do with them living in larger groups and socializing more than the typical non-black than anything else.

No one suggested that. You're certainly welcome to take the numbers however you like.
I believe, based on what I've read, it's likely at least some of those 4,000 or 5,000 died with Covid-19, not from it. That's all I'm saying.

My BIL lives in the Woodlands, TX. He had a liver transplant years ago.
His wife is an RN. They are keeping him home inside.
Are some of you suggesting that if he contracted Covid now, his cause of death would by Liver transplant?
A black person has lived with diabetes for years, contracts Covid so his cause of death is not Covid?

@truth_seeker
Would either have died if the one had never needed or had a liver transplant, and the other had never had diabetes?

I think the question that needs to be asked (and for some is not being asked) is whether or not those 5,000 would be dead today from their comorbidity.
Would their heart condition or obesity or diabetes have killed them last week, or did the fact that they got COVID kill them?
I think it is foolhardy to be drawing conclusions to try to make a political point right now when the facts are not yet in.
As for me, I would think that the people in the hospitals where these folks are dying know a tad more than people who read contrarian articles on the internet, and the assumption is fairer that they died because they caught a deadly virus.

In March, the CDC introduced a new code (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvss/coronavirus/Alert-2-New-ICD-code-introduced-for-COVID-19-deaths.pdf) to accurately capture mortality due to Covid-19 on death certificates.
With that code, the CDC noted that Covid-19 "should be reported on the death certificate for all decedents where the disease caused or is assumed to have caused or contributed to death."

Dunno. I check against my State Health Dept for actual numbers. That site had over 7X the actual COVID-19 deaths we had had, down as actual numbers. I e-mailed them and told them they were off, sent the source for my info (ND State Dept of Health) and 2 days later they corrected the numbers.
It doesn't hurt to cross check sources.

Earlier I saw a map with the hotspots defined, and most of the numbers from New York, New Jersey, Michigan, California, Illinois, and Louisiana were concentrated in urban areas. It's pretty basic that the potential for transmission in urban areas, depending on the nature of the area, is significantly greater than in less dense populations.
Eventually, this will become endemic, (basically, everywhere), the question is one of whether we will have enough effective treatments to keep the Mortality low, or whether, eventually, there will be a vaccine.

Big jumps for New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois today. I'm sure it had nothing to do with red-State governors announcing suspensions of stay-at-home orders.

So, the question naturally follows of "What are California, Florida, Texas, and Georgia doing the others are not?" (and vice-versa, because either books are being cooked, or patients have a significantly better chance of survival in the 4 states mentioned above.

@Smokin Joe, I'm not sure how many similar actions there have been. California was early in going SiP, March 17 for SF Bay Area Counties and then statewide a few days later. I think - feel free to correct me - that the other states were a few weeks later. What the states have in common is relatively low population density, and fairly low-moderate dependency on mass transit.
It's entirely possible that the states were hit in varying degrees by the different waves. California got some infected people from China even before screening of arriving China passengers started on 1/17 at SFO and LAX. Screening started at ATL on 1/22. I suspect FL and GA got more of the slightly later wave from EuroLand than did CA.
All that speculation said, those four states having the lowest per-million cases and deaths among the states with the most cases does seem odd, CA being among them especially.

Thanks for continuing to post this information, @Elderberry .
I take a look at it every time you have a new list and find it very interesting.
Ohio (though the 7th most populous state and pretty densely so) was down at 17th on the list for a long time, but 2,000 case in one prison and some serious hot spot nursing homes brought us up to 14th.

Although we have had some nursing home deaths, I am thankful that most of this State's nursing homes have remained COVID free.

Just found out that New York was sending elderly Covid patients to nursing homes instead of sending them to hospitals. Gee, what could go wrong with that strategy?

Absolutely nothing as far as the government in NY is concerned.
They get the body count for Miz Nancy to wave around and funding, and get to keep their lockdown, and all they have to do is murder a passel of old folks with criminal negligence disregard for their safety.
Besides, dead people vote Democrat.

Oh my gosh! BIDEN T-SHIRTS.......so. funny and true! I lol'ed for a while. Love it.

Big jumps for New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois today. I'm sure it had nothing to do with red-State governors announcing suspensions of stay-at-home orders.
I doubt it. We can't stay locked down forever. Wash your hands. Be careful. The 'JUMP' isn't from opening up states. People can take 3 weeks + to come down with it, and those 'changes' are from past infections. In fact I don't believe any of those stats. Why would anyone? Doctors are told to mark any death, as COVID. No one is dying from cancer, strokes, heart attack, diabetes, lung disease....ONLY COVID -19. sarcasm.

People can take 3 weeks + to come down with it, and those 'changes' are from past infections. In fact I don't believe any of those stats. Why would anyone? Doctors are told to mark any death, as COVID. No one is dying from cancer, strokes, heart attack, diabetes, lung disease....ONLY COVID -19. sarcasm.
If those changes were not the retroactive addition of people now presumed to have died as a result of COVID-19. PA has had issues with inflated numbers, and NY was known to add in 3700 "presumptive COVID-19 deaths"

Just found out that New York was sending elderly Covid patients to nursing homes instead of sending them to hospitals. Gee, what could go wrong with that strategy?
@Hoodat
Nothing if your plan is to reduce the financial burden of paying pensions and SS benefits to geezers.
This way you get to kill them off to have more money to buy votes with, and can blame it on a "bug".

In the not too distant future, government will begin giving out free cigarettes to anyone over 50.

Apparently, smoking tobacco provides some resistance to catching the disease.

Roughly 48% of Georgia's SARS-2 deaths occurred in long-term care facilities. Most cases occurred earlier on before facility lock down procedures were put in place. Our State does not have a policy of placing known Covid-19 patients into nursing home facilities. Which is why our percentage is much lower than states like New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Minnesota, etc. (i.e. states run by Democrats)

Not yet, we have to wait for the riot totals to come in.
The media don't need no stinkin' totals. They smoothly transitioned from George Floyd to Covid 2nd Wave as if it were all scripted and - presto - trashed the market.
They love it when a plan comes together.

The media don't need no stinkin' totals. They smoothly transitioned from George Floyd to Covid 2nd Wave as if it were all scripted and - presto - trashed the market.
They love it when a plan comes together.
There might be a reason for that.

Different states are different demographics, but I see a couple of interesting comparisons among CA, TX, and FL.
The three states have similar cases-per-million-population numbers.
TX has slightly more than half CA's deaths-per-million-population number. TX's average age is a bit younger than CA's, but I suspect CA's 10-day mandate that nursing homes accept "recovered" Covid-19 patients has a lot to do with that.
FL's deaths-per-million-population number is slightly higher than CA's, even though FL's average age is significantly older than CA's.
In the context of the whole US, CA has done better than most states, and FL and TX have done similarly or a bit better. Not exactly the pictures of TX and FL the MSM want to show.

No doubt. Anybody that thinks corporate hospitals who want to dominate the nation are above adding a few auto accident deaths or OD deaths to the virus total in order to get more federal money is a fool.
Not to mention the "Perfectly healthy 86 year old diabetic with heart trouble that died in a tragic virus-related death today."

Interesting point time to bring up that (1) Only 1% of the population of the U.S. has gotten this thing (based on testing), and of that 1%, roughly 3% of those who caught it died. From the hysteria, you'd think we were watching the Movie Contagion.

And it only took 48 million tests to find those 3.6 million cases.

Assuming we caught every known case—which, of course, we did not. The death rate with widespread testing is closer to 1%, meaning either the virus is not as deadly as it was made out to be and/or there are a ★★★★load of false positives.

Considering the fiscal and political incentives for false positives, I would surmise that in some cases, at least, the verification process might be biased toward positive tests, and that treatment and isolation would put those patients with false positives not only in a position to be infected, but already with a condition which was not being treated with a presentation similar to the virus.
If you have a false positive, the very system which is supposed to save you might kill you instead (especially in the case of long term care facilities).
We know the numbers have been doctored with "presumed" COVID deaths, and that those who died with a positive test result from other causes have been counted among the victims of SARS-CoV-2, so there is no doubt that the numbers are inflated. We just don't know how much.
In the breakdown in this State (ND), there have been 88 total deaths with a positive CCOVID-19 test, ten of which tested positive but died of other causes. While the official COVID-19 count is 88, 11.36% of those did not die of the disease, but with it.
Even that roughly ten percent inflation of those whose COD is COVID is likely to under represent those who have been counted as killed by the disease but who died of other causes, especially in jurisdictions which appear heavily politically or fiscally motivated to inflate those numbers.

In my county of Wisconsin with a population of over one hundred thousand there has not been ONE!!! death attributed to the virus. There have been, of course, hundreds of people diagnosed with the virus but not one death. And no, not everyone we see out shopping or whatever wears a mask. About fifty-fifty.

There are counties in Georgia like that. In Echols County, nearly 5% of the population has tested positive for SARS-2. But not a single death. Not one.
-
When Georgia ended its lockdown near the end of April, the mortality rate (reported deaths/reported cases) was 3.90%. Eighty days later, that rate has fallen 40% down to 2.36%. Thought I would post it here since you will never hear a single news outlet report it.

@Elderberry
How do you capture the tables so they line up like a spreadsheet?
Say it doesn't require editing a text file with spaces.

@Slide Rule
I'm not up to speed on them table things.
I just do it in my ole 2013 Word all spaced out(me and the file).
Once I learned I had to use a Monospaced font then it wasn't too bad.

That is what I tried before, but I always lose patience.
I appreciate the effort you put in to provide periodic data.
Give me an example of a Monospaced font.
Thanks

I believe here, the only monospaced font available is Courier

Consolas works, too. But you have to type it in yourself.

There has finally been one recorded death from the virus in my county. The person was in his seventies with an underlying medical problem.

Why would the media think anyone cares about the numbers of covid cases? This incessant reporting of cases is unnerving.
They don’t seem to care about flu deaths? they aren’t breaking into programming with daily numbers of flu cases, state by state; and seasonal flu cases are roughly equal to and are just as deadly to susceptible populations as covid.
Never mind. Rhetorical question.

An honest answer: because those numbers are what the government uses as an excuse to keep everything shut down.

The question is this: what happens after November, when Newsom, Cuomo, Wolf, Whitmer et al. don't want to give up their newfound powers?

They will be told to suck it up and be the good little commie drones they are,or give up their seats come the next election.

And still hasn't brought the infection rate under control, even with the shutdown. After two weeks of looking like it worked, now it's back to 10,000+ new cases a day.

Our cases per population now exceeds Sweden. How many hundreds of billions did that cost us?

The number of cases was captured to be used as a predictor of deaths. With numbers fabrication financially benefiting hospitals, the quality of it as a forecast tool is gone. We saw a transfer of deaths from whatever they were to Kung Fu flue. So there was an increase of deaths for the virus without total deaths increasing. All causes barely wavered.
Fortunately for all of us deaths no longer follow the number of cases predictor. Unfortunately for those in the data fabrication business the difference is being noticed by more and more people.
The ratios of the two numbers, Deaths, and Cases are no longer correlated. Those in the medical area and in the number crunching area are not in sync.
I would recommend discarding any and all consideration of cases, or echoing anything about them. It is a failed predictor. Focus on deaths, Deaths per population seems best. And it is trending toward zero.

This is precisely the reason the media are focusing on number of cases, to distort the threat. Because the number of deaths are dropping, in terms of the number of cases, the latter is no longer an indicator of the former, but that mental image of higher deaths:cases ratios from early in the pandemic is maintained in media panic. This is done for social control, not so much medical reasons.

Exactly. Florida has similar case counts, but much lower deaths in proportion to cases. Reality is that the virus was sweeping New York for weeks, infecting millions, before Cuomo and de Blasio even acknowledged it had gotten out of New Rochelle. Much of tail end of the bad flu season was likely coronavirus.
The death rate was never 8%. The reason it looked like it was 8% or higher was because so many cases were being missed, and they could test a dead body (or take any pneumonia case and list it as a probable COVID death) more readily than the litany of living cases. Among cases with symptoms, the fatality rate is 2-3%... but most cases, we're now finding, have no symptoms at all, and the fatality rate is closer to 1%.
The real issue here are the alleged cases with no symptoms (over 40% of all cases) and who never spread it to anyone else (80% of all cases). We only have two tools to prove an infection: PCR test and antibody test, and the antibody test is fraught with errors so they automatically assume it's wrong if it comes back negative. If there's a false positive, nobody would be able to tell.

Horowitz: Bombshell NYT report says MOST coronavirus positives are for non-contagious, insignificant amounts of virus (https://www.conservativereview.com/news/horowitz-bombshell-nyt-report-says-coronavirus-positives-non-contagious-insignificant-amounts-virus/)
You mean we did all this mass testing for nothing?
A few weeks ago, I mentioned (https://www.conservativereview.com/news/horowitz-mass-testing-results-endless-panic-false-positives/) a 2007 New York Times article showing that PCR (polymerase chain reaction) swab tests are so sensitive that they have been known to perpetuate pseudo-epidemics. Well, now the New York Times, in a bombshell weekend report, reveals that most of these tests for COVID-19 are so sensitive that they might be creating thousands upon thousands of false positives or flagging people with tiny quantities of virus who are not contagious.
We have shut down our economy and our lives for months based on hundreds of thousands of asymptomatic people testing positive for a virus that was presumed to be contagious at the time of the positive test result. We make people isolate for 14 days, then trace all their contacts and disrupt their lives and liberty as well, without any due process. Yet according to the Times, up to 90% of those who test positive in state labs are likely no longer contagious by the time they test positive and in fact would test negative under more prudent lab protocols...

Some here have been trying to tell you this for months.

Exactly. Florida has similar case counts, but much lower deaths in proportion to cases. Reality is that the virus was sweeping New York for weeks, infecting millions, before Cuomo and de Blasio even acknowledged it had gotten out of New Rochelle.
Thanks for the reminder. I had forgotten all about the New Rochelle map. I wonder how many of those first New Rochelle victims were transferred to nursing homes inside the city.

My county of over one hundred thousand people have had 1,186 people test positive for the virus. One fatality. That's less than one tenth of one percent of the people who've tested positive.

A reality of check on the flu virus, China import, advanced here by democrats. The masks commonly used do not stop the virus, but the masks do allow the virus a place to collect and infect the wearer. Most of the people that became infected were mask wearers. Like is saID, THE DEMOCRATS HAVE POLITICIZED AND USED THE FLU VIRUS FOR FULL POLITICAL ADVANTAGE. Thank them with your election ballot. Socialist see humanity as A herd to manipulate.

West Virginians have had their fill of Covid and the lockdowns.
This is from yesterday's WVU v. Kansas game.
