Just a fun survey. Which do you like?

Two answers allowed and guests can vote.

FYI I like both. I’ve always wanted a dog and a cat.

While I love all animals, I have been a dog person since infancy. MY first word was "Pepper," my parents' dog. I have three rescue terriers and have loved and lost several more.

@austingirl

I’d like a yellow lab or a pug. But I know I’d get a shelter dog.

You can probably find either one at a shelter. It's a crying shame how many dogs are thrown away. My pups are rescues.

Cats make me sneeze and my eyes swell up.  I have three dogs, so I'm definitely a dog person.

Dogs, more than both.
I always have a dog. Always. I really can't imagine life without one. I can't remember even 6 months of my life without at least one.

Right now I don't have a house cat, nor have I had one since '12. I just don't need one. What little mouse traffic I have had has been easily controlled by traps.

With that in mind, while I am alright with both, cats are less necessary. Unless mice.

Both, they always seem to get along just fine....  sometimes after some "adjustment!"

The only dog I've ever purchased was Toby our Yellow Lab. I got Toby right after our first child was born so they would grow up together. All the others have been rescue dogs.

The most loved dog we've ever had was our Newfoundland Lab mix that we got right after we got Toby. My son Patrick would climb up on him and sleep using him for a bed. One day I'll get another.

I have two rescues:

Blue, a weimaraner.

Casey, a doberman/dane mix.

Both dogs---terribly abused before they came to me. Lap dog personalities in guard dog bodies. Perfect companions.

I love both dogs and cats, although I've only had cats.  My parents didn't allow pets, so when I bought my house, I had every intention of getting a dog.  But then I realized that, at the time, I was working long hours and that was no good for a dog.  A cat, on the other hand, can live without me for a longer period of time.  So I ended up with cats.

First cat came from a shelter.  The last two were strays I rescued.  Actually, my last cat rescued himself.  One day I opened the garage door and he just walked in and made himself at home.  LOL

Haven't had any cats since my last one passed a year and a half ago.  Should really get up off my duff and get one at the shelter.  So many critters need a good home.

Definitely a dog person.  I am very fond of the Doberman breed; our first being a purebred that lived 14 years and then we had a Doberman/Ridgeback mix that lived to almost 16 years.

Our most recent recent rescue we got when he was just 8 weeks old and the shelter didn't know his background. We thought he might be a Doberman pup. He is black and tan with all the markings of a Doberman.  We wanted to find out for sure so we had a DNA test done.  Boy were we surprised!!!  Not a bit of Doberman in him.  He is Whippet, Boxer, Shepherd, Akita and Pug!!!  Highly obedient and extremely intelligent.  He took 1 week to potty train without ever going in the house.  He knows exactly what we are talking about and obeys, normally with no or little training.  His one flaw; he is absolutely terrified of thunder. We bought him a thunder jacket and didn't do much good.  Rainy season here in FL isn't exactly his favortie time of the year.

So sad that anyone would abuse any animal.  I can definitely see the Doberman in Casey.  Both are beautiful dogs.  :)

They all touch our hearts in individual ways. I couldn't handle a big dog but I love them all.

Easy.  Dogs.

Dogs are the Jughead to my Archie, the other half of my heartbeat.   Last weekend, my old friend Claudie came bounding up the stairs and collapsed on the landing.    Hemangiosarcoma,  said the hospital.  We are in shock, and mourning.   The end came too soon,  but he'd had a near perfect last day:  sunshine,  a run on the beach, and time at the dog park with his buddies.

He was a good dog,  and knew much love because he gave it.

I'm so sorry that you lost your furry bestie.  Glad to hear his last day was nearly perfect and it is obvious that he absolutely loved the life that you gave him.  Dogs are simply amazing.  Our dog was swimming laps in our pool the day before we had to put him down.

A dog just makes me smile.   Loyal goofballs.   Who doesn't need a dog to greet him at the door every evening, pogo-ing up against the back glass?

Claudie leaves behind his brother,  Baxter,  who is bewildered why his gonzo compadre just up and left.   But I took him to the dog park today,   and he made fast friends with a bunch of fuzzballs twice his size.   And he's eating again.  And the sun is shining,  blessed by the perspective of some good memories.

We only had Claudie for two years.    He was the longtime boon companion of my neighbor,  who had to give him up as his life circumstances changed.   Claude and my Baxter had been neighborhood rogues and walking buds since they were pups,  and it was an easy transition to a multidog family, especially since Claude's old dad would come by a couple of days each week to walk him.    We buried him together last Monday night in my garden, and raised a parting glass of Deanston 14.

But since it falls within my lot
That I should rise and you shall not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Farewell, for now, my sweet goofball

Peace be with you,

We used to have greyhounds.  I wanted large dogs and they had long lives 14~16 years.  Turns out bone cancer is somewhat common.  We lost one at 3 yrs old and another the next year at age 2.  I cannot do that again.

We have shelter rescue dogs and cats now.  Probably always will.

@thackney

I had a rescue Greyhound and three whippets. They all died of a fast-growing cancer that attacked the pericardium, eventually squeezing the heart muscle. I can't have another sighthound.

We were quite involved in rescue greyhounds back in the day.  We published newsletters, brought those available for adoption to pet stores, etc.

We started keeping records of deaths.  How old and what cause.  Cancer at a relatively young age was about half of them.

@Jazzhead  My sympathies on the loss of your pup. I know how it felt when my Scottie died so many years ago (haven't had a dog since).
