A few versions of "Rose Rose I love you", I believe the first is karaoke followed by Gordon Jenkins and then, Petula Clark before she became really popular.

"Rose, Rose I love you" was originally a big hit in China in Chinese at least from around 1940, maybe more of a history than that, then, it eventually made its way around the world.

SUNDAY, 3 December 2017 Music Thread...All Music Is Welcomed

https://www.onthisday.com/music/birthdays/december/3 (https://www.onthisday.com/music/birthdays/december/3)
http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/born_today (http://www.thisdayinmusic.com/born_today)

We'll look at a few birthdays today, it seems appropos for the Christmas season that today is a birthday of someone fairly well known for singing Christmas songs along with many others.

That being Andy Williams, here singing "Happy Holidays" and next, "Moon River".
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhShYpOMENw#)
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_jgIezosVA#)

And Andy Williams also did "Cant' Get Use To Losing You", another big hit. In fact, it was on this forum, that song was posted of it being performed by a modern band and I pointed out that AW also sang it decades ago.
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO_vKrVxGJM#)

Then, at the other end of the spectrum, it is Ozzie Osbourne's birthday as well. - Crazy Train
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2VZjE6JdHg#)

Mickey Thomas, singer for Jefferson Airplane/Starship, "Ride the Tiger" with Starship. More of an album cut for me but good.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBtIbaFAVTg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBtIbaFAVTg)

Nicky Stevens, Brotherhood of Man with 'United we stand'. People may know or not know this song, I think it was bigger in the UK but pretty good.
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uYIL2V51zI#)

Don Barnes of 38 Special, "Rockin' in to the night"
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLMRgBtXCDw#)

And finally, Duane Roland of Molly Hatchet and their well known classic rock song, "Flirtin' with disaster".
! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci3afKw_mcY#)

The drummer of "Taste" has a birthday as well, that was Rory Gallagher's group prior to going solo.

So, a pretty big platter today.

Johnny Hallyday, French rock and roll icon passed away, perhaps the "French Elvis", he was 74 years old, sold over 100,000,000 records. One article said his songs were largely "derivative" of rock and roll in the English language. I think that describes it pretty well. I've heard some of his songs.

Dang!!!! I wouldn't buy a guitar on line.

Yeah that would become an issue when you're buying a new Martin D-45 at $9,400.

No matter how many detailed close up online photographs of every guitar the e-tailer has in stock you've got to hold them and actually play them at those prices.

And Gibson's gone completely to pot too.

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXKoLV5UIAY&t=583s#)

They're said to be so far in debt ($520M) that they don't bother drying the raw wood out before it goes to the shop floor.

And it gets worse.

http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2017/Custom/SG-Custom.aspx (http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/2017/Custom/SG-Custom.aspx)

Pretty? Huh? At $3300 it ought to be.

Look down the page.

The Fingerboard material is listed as 'Richlite'.

'Richlite' is a composite of Paper and super heated glue.

$3,300 for a guitar with a friggin' Paper Mache Fingerboard.

Gibson has taken leave of their senses.

A lot of good music posted, well, we are in the countdown to Connie Francis's birthday, that's one I know, probably because it's simple and I know it for another reason, 12-12 (Tuesday)....I guess she's a Jersey girl. I have her bio, I've read bits of it, I haven't been able to get into the whole book.

One of rock's best songs ever, they made a tv show in the UK named after it.

Her wikipedia bio says she is 5'1", Dolly Parton is 4'11", you would not think they were that short... really.

(This one was new old stock, untouched, when I acquired her, too, two years ago!)

The one I did actually buy in a store:

And I've had no complaints with any of them!

Thanks! The nice part is, no two of those guitars sounds exactly alike, each of them
gives me slightly different shades of the sound I prefer---straight, no chaser into a Fender
amp, a clean crying sound, and nothing in between but a volume pedal.

https://www.onthisday.com/music/birthdays.php (https://www.onthisday.com/music/birthdays.php)

All Music Is Welcomed! Per birthdays,

In 1915, on this day, "Ol' Blue Eyes", Frank Sinatra, was born in Hoboken New Jersey.
'Luck Be A Lady' and many other songs could be posted, we had some show every Saturday afternoon, it might still run, that would spotlight his many recordings.

Connie Francis, born on this day in 1938, in Newark New Jersey:
"C'est Lui Je Veux (Some Other Boy)", a nice rocking number in French.
Here she sings with Marvin Rainwater, "The Majesty of Love".
I'm a fan of Marvin Rainwater, checking out Connie's discography, this appears to have been recorded right before she made it big. Her first big hit seems to be "Who's Sorry Now".

And on this day,  in East Orange New Jersey, in 1940, Dionne Warwick was born.
'Say A Little Prayer For Me"

So, the state of the day must be Rhode Island or maybe Alabama.

Other birthdays to be added later.

I believe, Dick Wagner was in the band for Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies":
Wagner may have played on a session or two from that album, but the album was the next-to-last
by the original Alice Cooper band. (They'd make one more album as a band, Muscle of Love,
then go on a so-called indefinite hiatus during which it transpired that the real reason for the rift
was the band's objection to the increasing stage theatrics and Cooper's desire to get even more
theatrical than the band already was being.) Wagner was about to become part of Lou Reed's "Rock
and Roll Animal" band (with Steve Hunter as his guitar tandem) that Alice Cooper lifted for his first
solo albums beginning with Welcome to My Nightmare, in addition to co-writing much of the
material with Cooper.

Jesse Belvin co-wrote Earth Angel:
Quote
His composition "Earth Angel", eventually co-credited to Belvin and Hollywood Flames singers Curtis Williams and Gaynel Hodge after a legal dispute, was recorded by the Penguins, and became one of the first R&B singles to cross over onto the pop charts, selling a million copies in 1954/55.[4]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Belvin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Belvin)

Jesse Belvin, I'm not sure of how I missed that. A talent, another tragedy... there are a few stories on how he passed away, short of it, he was in a car wreck after a show.

Quote
However, before the album was issued, and shortly after finishing a performance in Little Rock on a bill with Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, and Marv Johnson, Belvin and his wife were killed in a head-on collision at Hope, Arkansas.[7] The concert was the first concert played before an integrated audience in the history of Little Rock, and was stopped twice by interruptions from whites in the audience, shouting racial epithets and urging the white teenagers in attendance to leave at once. There had also been several death threats on Belvin prior to the concert, which led to speculation that his car had been tampered with prior to the accident. The actual cause of the accident was the driver who nodded off and lost control. The driver had been recently fired for falling asleep at the wheel by another musical act.[8] Belvin was buried in Los Angeles.[1]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Belvin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Belvin)

A car accident but one wonders, if not for the earlier turbulence at the concert, if things might have gone more smoothly afterwards.

Rolling Stone magazine: (this article seems to make it sound like Belvin was driving the car but I read in Sam Cooke's bio that they had a driver as the wikipedia article above says):
Quote
The late Jackie Wilson played a 1960 package show with several top singers in Little Rock, Arkansas, and when he realized they were scheduled to play two shows, first for blacks then for whites, he pulled out of the second one. White residents brandished guns and chased Wilson's entourage out of town. One of the performers, Jesse Belvin, who had a big radio hit with "Goodnight My Love" and co-wrote "Earth Angel," accelerated his '59 Cadillac so suddenly that his tires blew, the car swerved, and he and his wife died in the wreck.

It's Rolling Stone, with their rubbish political views, so not an endorsement, one can take it however. Maybe they can have some sincere reporting on music.

It's not her birthday but a fine singer from the 1950s was Bunny Paul, born in Detroit, May 21st actually.

She was pre-Motown but an early producer of her music was Barry Gordy, Motown founder a few years later and Martha Reeves sang on some of Bunny's records apparently.

This one is really good, the others I've heard did not leave that same impression with me.

http://www.rockabilly.nl/references/messages/bunny_paul.htm (http://www.rockabilly.nl/references/messages/bunny_paul.htm)

I believe her career was cut short somewhat by having problems with her vocals.

The birthday websites might miss her birthday, at least one of them does.

@EasyAce

Thanks for your time and info.

I consider "Evolution" by the Hollies to be a great album, I guess this is when we are talking about the deep cuts by a group. I read that Graham Nash left the Hollies because they decided to do that all Dylan album. I'm sure the songs are okay but why do an album dedicated to Dylan. I'm not sure if they one of just Springsteen songs, I like the artist but not the idea so much.

The Hollies "Butterfly" per one music connoisseur I know, is also respected.

Some songs from "Evolution":

The Olde Toffeeshop, nice. Very British.

The whole album which includes "CarrieAnne" is pretty good.

I consider "Evolution" by the Hollies to be a great album, I guess this is when we are talking about the deep cuts by a group. I read that Graham Nash left the Hollies because they decided to do that all Dylan album. I'm sure the songs are okay but why do an album dedicated to Dylan.
Evolution is an excellent album. As for Graham Nash, he actually began to think beyond the Hollies
somewhat before the Dylan album project. He'd had to fence to get them to cut "King Midas in Reverse"
(it had the usual Clarke-Hicks-Nash songwriting credit but it was Nash's song all the way) and, when
that single didn't do as well as their previous ones, they rejected another new song he'd written at the
same time they decided on the Dylan project.

In the interim, he'd met Mama Cass Elliot when the Hollies were in California on a tour, and she in
turn introduced him to Joni Mitchell, who invited him to meet two friends of hers who were walking out
of their bands: David Crosby was being forced out of the Byrds, and Stephen Stills---who'd just
done the studio jam (as Mike Bloomfield's pinch hitter, when Bloomfield's insomnia struggle forced him
home to San Francisco after the first day's jamming) that helped Al Kooper complete the legendary
Super Session---was free from the collapsing Buffalo Springfield. The threesome took a liking to
each other and their impromptu playing and singing together in Mitchell's living room prodded Nash to
leave the Hollies ---as it happened, on the same day as Hollies drummer Bobby Elliott's birthday, which
rankles Elliot to this day---and move to Los Angeles to begin proper rehearsing with Crosby and Stills.

(Two years earlier, another supergroup formed in kind of the same way: Eric Clapton was pondering
walking out of John Mayall's Blues Breakers after former Graham Bond and incumbent Manfred Mann
bassist Jack Bruce sat in with the Blues Breakers for a couple of gigs and Clapton was impressed with
Bruce's improvisational abilities. They began working together a bit; meanwhile, on another occasion,
another Bond alumnus, drummer Ginger Baker, sat in with the Blues Breakers and he and Clapton
took a liking to each other---at which point Baker let it drop, "I'm getting a band together, do you want
to do it?" Clapton agreed so long as Bruce could be the bassist; Baker agreed to "let bygones be bygones"
and bring Bruce in; the three jammed at Baker's flat one afternoon and clicked. And thus was born
Cream . . . )

This, by the way, was the Nash song the Hollies spurned . . .

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TYq9RjdYYU#)

According to Bobby Elliott, the Hollies were pushed to reject the song by their then-producer Ron Richards.
Elliott swears he liked the song and would have done it in a minute but for that. Nash's last live
performance with the Hollies before he left the band was at the London Palladium.

This was the Hollies' first post-Nash British hit single . . .

Phil Ochs, if one has listened to Dylan, Baez or Arlo Guthrie, one might see this name from time to time.  With all about Joan Baez's political views, persona, one sometimes forgets she was just an ideal singer, a great soprano, great voice, singing one of Och's songs here:

@EasyAce

Thanks. Can't believe I never bothered to listen to this take before.

Rumor had it (don't know if it's true) that Jim Marshall offered to set Leslie up with his amps free, and Leslie turned him down, went out and bought Sunns on his own money.

But What A Tone! Completely different from 'Buckers or Strats.

Gibson's humbuckers were (still are) too clanky and shrill for me. I pried and unsoldered the covers off mine, back in the day, and it helped, some. Then, cogitating at length as to why the 50s ones sounded warmer it struck me that Part of it was they'd been Played, and Vibrated for years. Since they were all wound by hand back then I knew the windings hadn't settled completely.

Still wish I had a picture of the look I got from the guy at the paint store when I showed up with 2 humbuckers, a quart paint can full of socks, and offered to pay him to put them on a paint shaker for 10 minutes. He did it, wouldn't take my money, and probably accused me of being on LSD after I'd left, even though I explained it all to him up front.

It worked. Those 'buckers got thicker, warmer and richer from the windings being vibrated down closer together.

Thank God for Seymour Duncan saving me from any more paint store expeditions over the intervening decades.

I never would have even considered buying an SG if Seymour hadn't fixed my 'ice pick in the ear' gripe with factory humbuckers.

@To-Whose-Benefit?
It wasn't that he rejected Marshalls, it was that after he did his first solo album (Mountain) with Felix Pappalardi
producing and playing bass and keys, they decided to hit the road as Mountain, and when they arrived for their first
stand at the Fillmore West in 1969, West got a surprise waiting for him:

I had been using Marshall amps, and that’s what I expected to find when I opened a
bunch of cartons that had arrived from the airport, but instead I got a Sunn—and it
wasn’t even a guitar amp. The cartons contained a Sunn Coliseum P.A. head and four
4x12 cabinets, and I thought, ‘There’s no way I can get a good tone out of this thing.’
But the head had four microphone inputs and a master volume control, and when I
plugged in and turned it up I got this amazing tone, which became my sound. And
remember, this was years before amps had master volume controls. The head had
huge transformers and gigantic KT88 tubes, and the cabinets were loaded with
Eminence speakers, which never hurt your ears even with the treble all the way up.
That’s the amp I used on
Mountain Climbing, which included ‘Mississippi Queen'.”

When Mountain played Woodstock (it was their third gig as a working band), their roadie shocked the hell out
of West by plugging all his amps into Pappalardi's stack of Sunns, and the sound came out so huge
it scared the band for a few moments.

Mountain, "Southbound Train" (live at Woodstock)

! No longer available (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueoWlKXObYg#)

He used those Sunns on the coming Mountain albums and their live performances, using up to four stacks of speakers with those
heads in between each pair, with occasional other amps depending on venues.

Mountain also ended up as part of the show on the final night of the Fillmore East in New York
in June 1971. The original weekend bill was the Allman Brothers Band and the J. Geils Band with
Albert King opening for them; the final night, invitation only, featured in order: Albert King,
the J. Geils Band, Edgar Winter's White Trash, Mountain, Country Joe McDonald, the Beach
Boys, and the Allman Brothers Band.

This was Mountain's set at that show:

Here is some interesting trivia on "Shakin' All Over":

Quote
Performed many times by The Who, (sometimes in a medley with "Spoonful"), perhaps most famously at Woodstock in 1969 and on Live at Leeds in 1970. In Randy Bachman's autobiography, when he met Who bass player John Entwistle, he was told that people constantly got The Who and The Guess Who mixed up. Tired of being yelled at for not playing the song, The Who started to just to keep the crowd happy. Bachman responded that The Guess Who had the same reasons for having to play "My Generation". Entwistle, a known fan of 1950s and 60s rock and roll and rockabilly music, would also perform the song with his solo band and would incorporate a bass solo into the middle of the song, accompanied only by drummer Steve Luongo.

No matter whose version one hears, it is an amazing song. I like the Twiliters version quite a bit.  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn8IQ5PgcFk#)

More birthdays, including Les Maguire, pianist with Gerry & the Pacemakers . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFt8WJtfCuQ# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFt8WJtfCuQ#)

. . . Mike Pinder, keyboards/mellotron, the Moody Blues . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr1yVeg_XyM# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr1yVeg_XyM#)

. . . Dave Rowberry, who replaced Alan Price on keyboards with the Animals* . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q00ggfjRFA# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1q00ggfjRFA#)

. . . Mick Jones, guitarist, who played with the second edition of Spooky Tooth . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIbBIVzTOUU# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIbBIVzTOUU#)

. . . before co-founding and leading Foreigner . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDP1JCV7jDo# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDP1JCV7jDo#)

. . . David Knopfler, the original rhythm guitarist for brother Mark in Dire Straits . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyF1FwiYcoQ# (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyF1FwiYcoQ#)

* - Alan Price's departure from the Animals was announced publicly as him developing a fear of flying,
but it turned out to be nothing near psychological: he may have reneged on an agreement to divide
the arrangement royalties evenly among the band regarding their version of "The House of the Rising
Sun"---their management urged them to decide on whose name would go on the label, and when they
drew straws, so to say, Price came up the winner. The issue: the money began rolling in when their
version became a smash, but the royalties on the arrangement were never divided and that's when
Price supposedly came down with his fear of flying.

Dave Rowberry was brought in to replace him; he stayed in the group long enough to record
Animalization and such singles as "It's My Life," "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," "Inside
Looking Out," and "Don't Bring Me Down." The last of those was pretty much the end of the original
Animals; Rowberry went into session work. Sad irony: Rowberry, not Price, is shown in a group
portrait on the U.S. The Best of the Animals, covering their early hits, but he wasn't included
when the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To this day he's treated like a kind
of afterthought in histories of the band.

If you'll pardon the expression . . . amen! :) I hadn't really heard the Statesmen Quartet until you
posted that. I'll have to look for more of their stuff.

I have to admit---I have had a thing for black gospel music since my boyhood; when my family
moved out to Long Island from the Bronx, I used to pass by a couple of old-fashioned storefront
churches and I'd be transfixed by the music just as I was by good rock and roll, blues, jazz, etc.
I only learned later how much of the soul music I loved was inspired directly by the rhythms
and call-and-response vocal styles of the black churches. I loved it as much as I loved the
music in my boyhood synagogue and the pealing of the chimes from the nearby Catholic
church every afternoon at 5 p.m.; to this day I can hear those chimes in my mind even though
I haven't lived there in so many decades. And I can still hear my synagogue choir chanting and
singing so ethereally.

When I first heard the Soul Stirrers, I got immediately where vocal groups like the Temptations
and the Impressions came from. I didn't get on to the Mighty Clouds of Joy until much later. But
I sure didn't have to be told that the Chambers Brothers had gospel roots, I was taken to one of
their concerts in New York after "Time Has Come Today" became a big hit and you could feel the
gospel in their singing and playing. Last year, I was given a copy of the box set containing the 5
Royales' complete recordings and was shocked to realise they'd done a lot of straight-up
gospel early in their career. I'd loved their rhythm and blues but hearing them writing and singing
gospel was, pardon the expression, a revelation.

This is the set:

. . . and this is the 5 Royales when they were first known as the Royal Sons Quintet and singing
gospel (they changed the group name when they moved away from gospel to become early
R&B pioneers) . . .

Skeeter Davis:

More of these birthdays today,

Though born a few years apart, who would have known two of the Monkees were indeed born on this day in history? Michael Nesmith and Davey Jones!
So, the story is pretty well known, you know, Nesmith's mother invented "White Out" or "Liquid Paper", that office liquid to correct typing errors.

Del Shannon:

Elias McDaniel aka Bo Didley,
 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XxGUIbYjmY#)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Diddley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Diddley)

So, there are bound to be some more "golden oldies" and "oldies but goodies" on a day like today it seems, we will see what more might turn up.

http://www.hillbilly-music.com/artists/index.php (http://www.hillbilly-music.com/artists/index.php)
A few more birthdays at the "hillbilly-music.com" website; Skeeter Davis is mentioned and a number of other artists I am not familiar with, some of these, there is little info on the web about...

Per the song, Skeeter is well-known for, "End of the World", it has also been covered quite a few times, I had a Herman's Hermits greatest hits CD; and they performed it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_End_of_the_World_(Skeeter_Davis_song) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_End_of_the_World_(Skeeter_Davis_song))

Written by Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee...

One can read how many folks covered it, the Carpenters and so on.

Also, nice versions by Skeeter are at youtube, I believe she performed it on heehaw.

And another birthday to post, Paul Stockey of Peter, Paul and Mary:

Title: Re: Saturday, 30 December 2017 Music Thread

And even a few more that can not be missed today,

Patti Smith, "Because the night" and others:

Jeff Lynne, ELO:

A lot of folks cover "Rock and Roll Is King", it's becoming recognized as a classic. I watched this one before, a Polish group performs it.

And of course, there is much more to Jeff Lynne, ELO, the Traveling Wilburys, the Move, etc.

Also, born on this day, Robert Quine of the Voidoids:

Maybe more to be listed later.
