WATCH: Dallas airport terminal falls silent as veteran's remains returned from Vietnam
Washington Examiner, Aug 8, 2019

An entire terminal at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport stood in silence Thursday as the remains of an American airman who died during the Vietnam War were brought home to the U.S.

Bryan Knight, a Southwest Airlines pilot, was the captain of the plane bringing home the remains of his father, Col. Roy Abner Knight, Jr., from Vietnam.

Knight was shot down while attacking a target on the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos in 1967. He was initially listed as missing in action but was declared killed in action seven years later.

His remains were discovered and identified in February 2019 by personnel designated to the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Jackson Proskow, a reporter for Canada's GlobalNews, captured the event as it unfolded at the airport in Dallas.

"I’m at the airport in Dallas, waiting for my flight home to DC from El Paso, and something incredible is happening," Proskow tweeted.

A gate agent announced over the PA system what was happening as Southwest Airlines workers handed out American flags to passersby.

"Our incoming plane is carrying the remains of an American pilot shot down over Vietnam in 1967," Proskow said in his tweet thread. "His remains were only recently recovered and identified and brought back to the US."

"As we wait at the gate, we’re told that Captain Knight is coming home to Dallas," Proskow continued. "When he left from this very airport to fight in Vietnam his 5 year old son came to the airfield and waved goodbye. It was the last time he would see his father alive."

Proskow said people in the terminal fell silent, and some even burst into tears as the gate agent explained that the pilot transporting Knight home was, in fact, his son.

He was almost certainly shot down while providing air cover for a SOG team in trouble.
