Germany to close all 84 of its coal-fired power plants, will rely primarily on renewable energy

Germany, one of the world’s biggest consumers of coal, will shut down all 84 of its coal-fired power plants over the next 19 years to meet its international commitments in the fight against climate change, a government commission said Saturday.
The announcement marked a significant shift for Europe’s largest country — a nation that had long been a leader on cutting CO2 emissions before turning into a laggard in recent years and badly missing its reduction targets. Coal plants account for 40% of Germany’s electricity, itself a reduction from recent years when coal dominated power production.
“This is an historic accomplishment,†said Ronald Pofalla, chairman of the 28-member government commission, at a news conference in Berlin following a marathon 21-hour negotiating session that concluded at 6 a.m. Saturday. The breakthrough ended seven months of wrangling. “It was anything but a sure thing. But we did it,†Pofalla said. “There won’t be any more coal-burning plants in Germany by 2038.â€

The beautiful German landscape is littered with windmills and solar "farms," everywhere you go. It's hideous.

This has also led to more people relying on a the original renewable: wood. The use of wood, particularly wood pellets, has skyrocketed in German homes over the last 10 years as they’ve gone on this climalarmist journey. Which means more trees cut down. Which also leads to more particulate pollution. And this will all lead to an increase in the cost of energy to go with the unreliability, which means the cost of living will skyrocket.
Of course, one has to wonder if what will happen instead of solar and wind (where will it all go? The footprints of these are huge) is that the use of natural gas will skyrocket, and one of Germany’s biggest suppliers is….Russia.

This will accelerate the de-industrialization of Germany. If they follow through, then we'll see a lot of their companies re-forming as American companies because we will have reliable and cheap energy sources.

They did. And that was when wood burning to keep homes warm took off.

All I have read in the past are articles about how their green energy was not integrated properly into the grid and basically useless at the times they needed it and the one great result was an enormous increase in utility bills to the German people. I am waiting to see how long my cousin, a highly educated person, Gastroenterologist in Germany holds out on her Green insanity. She finally reached her limit on the 'migrants' and has joined a group to fight against more of them coming over and deporting the others.

I remember from my time living in Bamberg (courtesy of the U.S. Army), one "didn't see much of the sun" from November until around April. Wonder how that does for solar...?

On Saturday, a German commission made up of federal and state leaders as well as industry representatives, environmentalists, and scientists agreed on a proposal to close all of Germany's 84 remaining coal plants by 2038. The proposal is expected to be adopted by Chancellor Angela Merkel's government, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The closures would be compensated with €40 billion ($45.7 billion) in government aid, which would be directed toward communities hardest hit by coal closures. Currently, coal is a major component of Germany's energy sector. Last year, it provided the country with 38 percent of its energy, according to the Fraunhofer Institute. The country is situated near substantial resources of cheap lignite coal.
Germany has been making strides to reduce its carbon footprint, and last year, renewable energy surpassed coal as part of the country's energy mix for the first time. Solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass resources together produced 40 percent of Germany's energy.
Without coal, the country will turn much more significantly toward renewable energy, and the Los Angeles Times says the plan calls for 65 to 80 percent of the country's power to come from renewables by 2040. Since the Fukushima disaster, Germany has pledged to close its nuclear power plants by 2022, so that source of low-carbon electricity will not be available to the country domestically....

Somebody better tell Herr Bruno Burger that he isn't on the climate change train!
Just a couple of years back the big story was how Germany sank all this money into renewables and couldn't them integrate it into the electrical grid, now two years later all is well? How long before the Germans have had enough taxation shoved down their throats? Money taken from the people and gifted to the 'migrants', property confiscated from the people and gifted to the 'migrants', renewable energy subsidized by the people plus the higher energy costs placed on the backs of Germans while the 'migrants' will surely have their energy bills subsidized by the German people.
Socialist, socialists everywhere! This is exactly what the democrats want to do here, it is exactly Hillary's 'It Takes a Village' IDIOT game plan.

I remember barracks heated by coal fired units. And a smell of coal and/or diesel all over torn.
I ould enjoy learning what percent the end of coal will require to be replaced,, and what will be used? Solar? Wind? Trash? Natural Gas?
Any new battery technology for solar/wind downtimes?
