It's the droplets they stop, the droplets harbor the live virus, and the masks cut down on the amount of those in the air if people are wearing them (correctly, that is.)
I can't count the people I have seen with their mouth covered and their nose hanging out. That's about as effective as using a condom with the end cut off.
The masks might help people keep their hands off their face some, too.
But what do they do with the mask when they take it off? Do they follow proper protocols for disposing of or washing them? Or do they get infected by their own PPE?

These past four years have been a real eye opener, thats for sure. I'm a nobody but I sure won't be looking at a great many individuals the same way again.

It was quite a FREE-ING feeling to be away from the group-think, prissy, starchy, 2-year old cat fights. LOL.
I wasn’t purged but decided to leave around the time of the bug zapper thread. It really creeped me out. I have read and posted sporadically since then.
I just read the writing on the wall over there and left. Not that a couple of my comments couldn't have had me banned (or shouldn't have), but I got out before the hammer came down. I looked at a couple of other forums, but I'm glad to be here.

Even John's emegency server transports were becoming planned and hokey. The fact it tool $300, 000- $400,000 a year to maintain a 90's forum was highly suspicious, and everyone knew that.It's hard to get parts for those old mainframes....the scrap value for gold is too high.

JRandomFreeper (Johnny) on FR died and the next day and I was writing a eulogy on paper before I typed it and added it to other eulogies for Freepers who had died. The eulogies were/are? on the first page of FR. At that time writing on paper, I was watching the conversation on the thread where Jim was killing off many old timers because they said they were not voting for Trump. After posting Johnny's eulogy, I left - it broke my heart for him to die and FR to die the next day. I believe I am still a member.
I was very active with Kartographer on the FR Prepping thread.
After leaving, "Catherine of Aragon" suggested this place so I came here. Hard to believe it has been four years here.
The money: I paid monthly on FR; when I came here I started the same thing and still do it monthly.

It took the cake when lifelong IT professionals offered to show JimRob how he could run things totally on $30,000/year.
He was not at all interested. That was very telling.
I didn't mind horribly that he was supporting 3 families (Him, John & the other brother) with the massive donation targets. But I told him he needed to be more honest about it. Evidently he wasn't interested in honesty or transparency on such scores.
I called him on the BS. An email screaming match. I got banned for life...TWICE.

What triggered my opus trying to provoke JimRob to quit sabotaging FR was when he began to ban folks who were donating $1,000, $3,000 and even $5,000 per month or quarter. He took to banning them over really shallow, silly, nothing reasons.
I still think that was utterly stupid, dumb, & self-destructive to his "baby."
I still like the FR format. Lots of easily logical buttons to reach different parts of things. Mostly text based. Seemed clear & simple enough, to me.
I loathed the seemingly smug glee so often displayed on banning folks who had been mere hours, days or weeks earlier great heart-felt friends. Seemed shallow & arrogant then and still does.

It reminded me of high school,but a high school populated by geezers who have never grown up.
Still, there was a LOT of interesting threads posted there that had nothing to do with current politics, and that were very interesting. Most of the people that posted these threads seemed to have no interest in posting to the current political threads, either. That's how they stayed there.

Don't remember all the details, but I THINK it was his goal had been to promote the military,and the whole thing got out of hand when people started sending him money and gifts for "his team", and he didn't know how back away after that.
He agreed to work a forgotten number of hours as volunteer at a VN hospital in the city where he lived, and there were a couple of retired SF guys living there that were keeping an eye on him to make sure he complied.
Which he did,because I never heard anything about him after that.
BTW, IIRC, he was something like 17 or 18 years old, and it seems he truly meant well.

You may realize that, like me, you tend to have a typo glitch where a "," is concerned. I have to concentrate on making sure there's a space after a comma, too. I sometimes fix them for you when I quote you.
I was a member (class of 98) of FR's inner core. I know them all. Helped man the FR Traveling booth at many events all over the place. Consider Jim and his family to be friends until he let idiots like "Californian" and "Elsie" run wild spewing religious bigotry 24/7/365. I talked to Jim about it, begged him to stop it in fact and he flat out refused so I just left. No opus, just left and took my money with me. Got banned years later when I publically told Jim exactly what I thought he had allowed himself and his forum to become. Missed what I had long consider to be my home for a long time but I'm over it now and never go there for any reason these days. Haven't spoken to Jim or any of the others since I got banned and have no reason to change that.

You and I have had a couple of conversations about our Class of '98, @Bigun. You did have a bright blaze of glory on the way out...lol.
I'd met Jim and Sheila a few times, Chris was usually there, as chauffeur. We had a couple lunches when he was in Phoenix. I liked him personally, but I could see the forum going to places that weren't good, echo-chamber wise.
I did learn a lot about being a Moderator, primarily through their bad examples. It's why I have the philosophy that I do, and it's a pleasure working with a like-minded Boss Lady like @mystery-ak. We think a lot alike about what we think a good discussion forum should be, which combined with my tech knowledge is why she promoted me to Administrator.
I think TBR is a great place to be. And being friends with so many people is nice.

I lurked back to early times, found it at Drudge probably early in '98, but didn't join until '00.
To your point... Absolutely. Back in its glory years, FR was cited and mentioned often by legends like Limbaugh, Hume, and Tony Snow. In fact, Snow was an awesome Freeper back in the day. I know there were other alleged conservative titans too, who frequented the site.
20 years ago, if someone would have told me what the end result of FR and Drudge would have been, I'd called them crazy.
