Attorney General Eric Holder has started "to feel a creeping sense of personal remorse" in the wake of the public revelations about his Justice Department's monitoring of Fox News reporter James Rosen, according to a new report.

"[F]or Attorney General Eric Holder, the gravity of the situation didn’t fully sink in until Monday morning when he read the [Washington] Post’s front-page story, sitting at his kitchen table," Daniel Klaidman reports for The Daily Beast. "...Holder knew that Justice would be besieged by the twin leak probes; but, according to aides, he was also beginning to feel a creeping sense of personal remorse."

Klaidman goes on to quote "sources close to the attorney general" who say Holder "has been particularly stung by the leak controversy, in large part because his department’s—and his own—actions are at odds with his image of himself as a pragmatic lawyer with liberal instincts and a well-honed sense of balance—not unlike the president he serves."

The whole story reads like an attempt to humanize Holder, as if 'remorse' might somehow win back the public trust. In fact, the scene in which the Attorney General 'comes to' while reading the Post has precedent in Hollywood suspense cinema: The unwitting accomplice who only realizes what he's done when, on the train the next day, he sees the headline on a stranger's paper. "How can he be bad if he didn't even realize what he was doing?," the viewer is meant to ask.

Then again, it's hard to feel bad for a man who didn't start feeling remorse until after the story went public.

He's either a liar (he testified falsely to Congress about never being involved in any press intimidation) or incompetent (he signs off on everything put in front of him without reading it).
