Protesters pay a visit to Cruz’s San Antonio office
Day 32 of the federal government shutdown came crashing into Ted Cruz’s San Antonio office.
SATX Indivisible, the local chapter of a grassroots progressive group that helped produce a Democratic wave election in 2018, organized a protest Tuesday at the Colonnade headquarters of this state’s junior U.S. senator.
Protesters objected to Cruz’s adamant support for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall — the wedge issue that has pushed this country into its longest-ever government shutdown.
The most dramatic moment came when six of the activists made their way up to the building’s ninth floor and met with Javier Salinas, the senator’s South-Central Texas deputy regional director.
Salinas, whose khaki pants and snakeskin boots looked like they could have come out of his boss’ closet, didn’t say much. He politely and patiently took notes while the activists shared their stories and aired their grievances.
Truthfully, there wasn’t much he could say.
In the face of human suffering, how do you justify political posturing? How do you explain the necessity for $5.7 billion in taxpayer money for a wall that the president promised more than 200 times on the campaign trail would be paid for by Mexico?
How do you make sense of the fact that Senate Republicans unanimously voted last month to pass a continuing resolution that did not include money for a wall, but now find that prospect unacceptable?......................
