Sir Charles (nickname) started out as a star basketball player at Auburn University (nicknamed "Round Mound of Rebound") and made a fairly long career in the Pros. He later transitioned to broadcaster pretty smoothly and has been often outspoken (sometimes liberal, sometimes conservative). He ran for office a few times and either withdrew or lost.
