This city might give homeless people the right to camp anywhere
Posted on May 1, 2019 by Tribune News Service

DENVER — Jerry Burton has lived in a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood here for the past few months, in an orange tent pitched on a sidewalk. He and the other homeless campers on the block — Burton proudly calls the encampment “Jerr-E-Ville,” and has declared himself the unofficial mayor — are defying the city’s urban camping ban, which means they are always bracing for a visit from the police.

A caseworker from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is trying to find permanent housing for the 57-year-old Marine Corps veteran whose tent is surrounded by his belongings neatly arranged in small plastic bags. In the meantime, Burton is hoping that Denver voters next week will overturn the city’s camping ban, thanks to an initiative he and others petitioned to get on the ballot.

The disgusting homeless camps are already bad enough along the creeks and rivers here around Colorado Springs without give them carte blanche to do whatever in the state parks.  No one wants to go to Garden of the Gods and have to step over junkies trash and needles.

But Denver seems bound and determined to turn Colorado into the Rocky Mountain version of San Francisco.

Isn't all that legalized weed wonderful kids?

Updated, camp cleared out.

“Jerr-E-ville” stands — and falls — as a symbol of Denver’s homeless struggle

May 2, 2019

...Jerry Burton’s camp had housed up to 20 people in tents along sidewalks in Curtis Park and Five Points. It went largely undisturbed for months, thanks in part to its relatively orderly appearance, despite the city’s urban camping ban....

...But Burton and his fellow residents were caught up last month in the city’s efforts to clear areas around Denver Rescue Mission and Curtis Park.

First, workers closed the sidewalk near Denver Rescue Mission following public health complaints about human waste, rodents and discarded drug paraphernalia. Displaced people then moved into residential neighborhoods, especially Curtis Park, where Jerr-E-ville stood for months.

“Rather than accessing the support we can provide to those living without a home, unfortunately, some folks moved and set up camps in the Curtis Park neighborhood,” wrote city spokesperson Julie Smith in an email.

Burton, a former enlisted U.S. Marine, had kept his camp in order, asking that residents refrain from hard drugs, conceal alcohol use and clean up after themselves. But the newcomers were more upsetting, said Ryan Cox, a resident of Curtis Park.

“It turned out to be quite a few folks that ended up in our neighborhood,” Cox said, estimating that 100 to 200 people moved onto Curtis Park streets last month. He said that he saw drugs, violence and a machete. Burton himself seemed upset by the change, Cox said, and Denver Homeless Out Loud faulted the city for “forcing two communities on top of each other.”

Jerr-E-ville moved several blocks to escape the chaos, and then moved again under threat of enforcement, eventually going to Commerce City before dispersing earlier this week. Burton was ticketed Monday for a camping ban violation in Denver. It’s the “most intense” enforcement that Howard has seen....

Look no further than Seattle to see what that will bring you. It's out of control.

Denver is well on its way there.  They passed an ordnance a couple months ago make it legal to poop in public.

2019:
"Seattle is dying."

2020 (if the sleep-anywhere ordinance passes):
"Denver is dying, too."

I don't know about being legal, but here in Seattle they are not arresting those who do, nor are they arresting them for anything but the most violent crimes. They are allowed up to 3 grams of heroin on their person which equates to 30 doses. And the city hands out needles. It use to be a needle exchange. Junkie brings in used needle and gets new one. The city now just hands them a 200 count packet.

A video on Youtube titled "Seattle is Dying," is required viewing for anybody that is serious about this subject.

It is an eye opener for anybody near homeless encampments, etc.

@txradioguy

Denver was already a leftist cesspool when I lived there in the 70's. Then the California leftists started moving to Denver to escape the leftist cesspool they had created in Ca that was taxing them to the gills to pay for all the "free" crap they voted for,and then sit about creating the same cess pool in Denver they had ran away from in Ca.

@NavyCanDo

That would work if the needles came loaded with "hot shots".

You have a right to become a junkie if that is what you want. You do NOT have a right to expect the taxpayers to fund your lifestyle,though.

Colorado is a beautiful State, with tremendous geology, geography, scenery, and resources.

But when I was down your way (northern side of the Front Range), I noticed the signs on the side of the road (Interstate 25) that said "Pull wrecked vehicles off the highway", which implies:
1: Wrecked vehicles are a common occurrence.
2: People have to be told to get them out of the way of traffic.

I drove the 'back roads' for the most part, it just seemed safer. Because there were no signs I figured they would be populated by drivers with a little more common sense.

For anyone with a lick of sense, it is a fine example of what not to do. Thankfully, while I was working down there, voters here back home (ND), who had passed medical weed at 60% in favor, rejected recreational weed by the same margin.

We have other things to tax to raise revenue (oil production, for example), and Colorado does, too, if the watermelon lobby would quit trying to stop the utilization of the State's natural resources and embrace the bounty under their feet.

@Smokin Joe

The problem is not and never has been weed. The problem has been the promise of socialism and the implied promise of "nobody will have to work and all your basic needs will be taken care of for you." In the "Socialist Utopia" everyone will be able to be heroin junkies without worry because their heroin,their housing,their medical care,and the money they need to pay for anything else they might need will just be given to them.

Socialists and junkies have one thing in common. They are both ignorant children,regardless of their age or education level.

The people fought and won against a measure that would have caused problems for the oil and gas business here (Prop 112) and IIRC the legislature found a backdoor way around the will of the voters.

There's good reason why there's a petition going around to recall Gov. Polis.

The Legislature proved that what they want counts for more than industry when they banned 30 round magazines and chased Magpul out. Typical Communists, they are adept at spending other people's money, and have little regard for what generates that money. (A modus operandi currently active in California as well)
Still, one has to consider that the Left is very vocal, and like typical Bolsheviks, adept at giving the impression that many more people share their beliefs and opinions than actually do. Combined with media bias, those essential votes in the legislature to defeat this garbage just may be swayed by what they think is popular support when it really is only one wheel with a bad bearing. Unfortunately, much of the State's destiny is in the hands of only a couple of counties along the Front Range, the curse of having large cities in a rural state.

When/where I was growing up you weren't supposed to move anything until the LEOs were done.  I've always just figured those signs are there for people from other states.

When I was growing up, moving the vehicle was called anything from "leaving the scene" to tampering with evidence. Not sure how insurance works in CO, (if it's no-fault or not), but impeding the flow of traffic on that corridor along the Front Range could back up cars and trucks from Fort Collins to Denver pretty fast, just about any time of day, so I reckon they want to keep the vehicles moving.

"I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT! I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT,AND IT IS A 68 Buic...THUD!"
Actually, the last 'thud' was a LEO killed about 12 miles from the rig I was working on during a well advertised blizzard, who had stopped to help another motorist who was stranded (along with 1000 others) in the storm. He was hit by some geezer in a Volvo... sadly, the LEO left a wife and a couple of kids widowed and fatherless.
The part I don't get is that somehow 1000 people went out in that storm to get stranded, despite 'no travel' warnings and road closed advisories--something we take seriously in North Dakota, and serious enough weather that our drilling rig was basically idling for over 24 hours to wait out the storm (something I have only seen three times in 40 years). The chief reason was that with weather that bad, the likelihood of someone getting hurt was significantly higher, and that getting them to Medical care beyond us patching them up and waiting for the roads to be cleared was problematical (No Life flights, no ambulances.)

I'm not sure where stupid falls on the normal population scale, whether this is an example of ordinary rates of potentially terminal stupidity, or whether it is a result of chemically enhanced lack of judgement beyond normal stupid levels (likely no one has studied it in that detail), but it would be easy enough to blame some sort of chemical augmentation to a serious lack of judgement on the part of the people who went out and got stuck on the road.

When you hear the lament of "not enough resources for the Homeless/Addicts (essentially the same thing)

Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Prince and Tom Petty died of "accidental" overdoses

All of them could afford "resources."

Tobacco, Alcohol and Weed re all Gateway Drugs.

That's kind of confusing,and makes it look like the doctor's were at fault unless he didn't tell them about the other prescription drugs he was taking.

About 83% against overturning the ban.

17% or so for removing it.

83% looks to be a modest "majority" to me!
