An American drone strike reportedly killed more than two dozen farmers and laborers and injured 40 more.

The Wednesday evening attack accidentally hit a large group of workers who were resting after they had just finished collecting pine nuts in the mountainous eastern part of the country, according to Reuters. The strike was intended to hit an Islamic State hideout.

“The workers had lit a bonfire and were sitting together when a drone targeted them,” said tribal elder Malik Rahat Gul.

The United States acknowledged the strike and said it was working with local authorities to work out further details.

"Pine Nuts?"  Is that what they're calling poppies these days?

Letter detailing civilian presence failed to prevent deadly Afghan drone strike

September 19, 2019

By Ahmad Sultan and Abdul Qadir Sediqi

JALALABAD, Afghanistan/KABUL (Reuters) – Twelve days ahead of the pine-nut harvest season, the governor of Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province received a letter from village elders in the Wazir Tangi area about their plans to recruit 200 laborers and children to pluck the dry fruit.

The letter, seen by Reuters and dated Sept. 7, was sent in an effort to help protect laborers from getting caught in clashes between U.S.-backed Afghan forces and Islamic State fighters in the mountainous terrain largely controlled by the jihadists.

Taliban insurgents and Islamic State fighters have been battling each other for control of the province’s natural resources. U.S. and Afghan forces routinely launch air strikes to regain control over territory lost to militant groups.

Despite Assurances, 30 Afghan Farm Workers Killed in US Drone Strike
Village informed officials of harvest season weeks in advance
Jason Ditz Posted on September 19, 2019Categories NewsTags Afghanistan

On Wednesday night, US forces carried out their latest disastrous air strike in Afghanistan. A US drone attacked and killed at least 30 civilians, and wounded 40 others in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province.

The victims of the attack were farm workers who were participating in the harvest of pine nuts in a village’s forest, and a number of children who were also there to take part in the harvest.

What adds insult to injury, however, was that the village elders had foreseen this as an issue, and specifically sent letters around to officials two weeks ago. The letters, dated September 7, were meant to assure that the gathering on the outskirts of the forest was nothing to do with militants, and was merely hired laborers for the harvest. They were assured this was not a problem.
