President Trump clashed Tuesday with Democratic leaders Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi with the cameras rolling in the Oval Office, as the president insisted he's willing to let the government shut down if Congress doesn't approve funding for his U.S.-Mexico border wall.
"If we don't have border security, we'll shut down the government," Trump said.
The highly anticipated sit-down quickly escalated, in public, as Trump allowed the press to attend the beginning of the meeting. Trump started by repeatedly telling Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, that what she's proposing would not pass the Senate.
Schumer then raised his voice as he claimed the Senate could pass measures to keep the government running regardless.
"If it's not good [on] border security, I won't take it," Trump shot back.
Pelosi and Schumer repeatedly urged the president to take the meeting private, but not before he declared he's "proud to shut down the government for border security" and will "take the mantle."
Pelosi noted, "this has spiraled downwards."
The explosive meeting with Schumer, the Senate minority leader, and Pelosi, the top House Democrat, came hours after Trump threatened Tuesday to have the military “build the remaining sections†of the wall if Congress doesn’t deliver the funding. Vice President Mike Pence was also in attendance.
As Trump began discussing the details of the negotiations, Pelosi said, "I don’t think you should have a debate in front of the press."

President Trump on Tuesday engaged in an extraordinary argument with Democratic congressional leaders over his demand for border-wall funding, threatening a government shutdown if he does not get the money.
"I will be the one to shut it down," he told House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) at the White House.
During the contentious meeting in the Oval Office, Pelosi (D-Calif.) repeatedly asked Trump not to discuss the funding request in front of the news media.

Of course they do. But one thing I'm wondering about is the mindset of the current crop of democrats. They're certainly nothing like the democrats of my young adulthood. But do they really want unlimited occupation by illegals? I know the politicians have the yen for the built-in votes but do the regular people want that?
The dems ran for two years on Trump hate and got a small majority in the house, but how long will that fly as a platform?

So what did the rats say here - that they are willing to compromise with the president by offering some portion of wall funding via a continuing resolution while telling everyone there will be no wall because walls don't work?

I've never supported shutting down the government for stupid stuff like defunding PP, but national sovereignty and the security of our borders are worth the price. Trump is past the most recent election cycle and right now is in as good a position as any to take the pain of a prolonged government shutdown.
The issue is important, and easy to understand and articulate to the American people. Go for it, Mr. President - if Schumer/Pelosi won't approve full funding to secure the border, shut the damn government down. That's a far better approach than crippling commerce by stopping cross-border traffic.

Democrats are anti-American. Pelosi was an actual card carrying communist. They want EQUAL MISERY FOR ALL..under that plan, while THEY sit on top in their mansions. Feudal system. The First Time I Heard Of Barack. By Tom Fife. 11-20-08
During the period of roughly February 1992 to mid 1994, I was making frequent trips to Moscow, Russia, in the process of starting a software development joint-venture company with some people from the Russian scientific community. One of the men in charge on the Russian side was named V. M.; he had a wife named T.M.
V. was a level-headed scientist while his wife was rather deeply committed to the losing Communist cause - a cause she obviously was not abandoning.
One evening, during a trip early in 1992, the American half of our venture were invited to V. & T.'s Moscow flat as we were about to return to the States. The party went well and we had the normal dinner discussions.
As the evening wore on, T. developed a decidedly rough anti-American edge - one her husband tried to quietly rein in.
The bottom line of the tirade she started against the United States went something like this:
"You Americans always like to think that you have the perfect government and your people are always so perfect. Well then, why haven't you had a woman president by now? You had a chance to vote for a woman vice-president and you didn't do it."
The general response went something along the lines that you don't vote for someone just because of their sex. Besides, you don't vote for vice-president, but the president and vice-president as a ticket.
"Well, I think you are going to be surprised when you get a black president very soon."
The consensus we expressed was that we didn't think there was anything innately barring that. The right person at the right time and sure, America would try to vote for the right person, be he or she black or not.
"What if I told you that you will have a black president very soon and he will be a Communist?"
The out-of-the-blue remark was met by our stares. She continued, "Well, you will; and he will be a Communist."
It was then that the husband unsuccessfully tried to change the subject; but she was on a roll and would have nothing of it. One of us asked, "It sounds like you know something we don't know."
"Yes, it is true. This is not some idle talk. He is already born and he is educated and being groomed to be president right now. You will be impressed to know that he has gone to the best schools of Presidents. He is what you call "Ivy League". You don't believe me, but he is real and I even know his name. His name is Barack. His mother is white and American and his father is black from Africa. That's right, a chocolate baby! And he's going to be your President."
She became more and more smug as she presented her stream of detailed knowledge and predictions so matter-of-factly - as though all were foregone conclusions. "It's all been thought out. His father is not an American black so he won't have that social slave stigma. He is intelligent and he is half white and has been raised from the cradle to be an atheist and a Communist. He's gone to the finest schools. He is being guided every step of the way and he will be irresistible to America."
We sat there not knowing what to say. She was obviously very happy that the Communists were doing this and that it would somehow be a thumbing of their collective noses at America: they would give us a black president and he'd be a Communist to boot. She made it quite obvious that she thought that this was going to breathe new life into world Communism. From this and other conversations with her, she always asserted that Communism was far from dead.
She was full of little details about him that she was eager to relate. I thought that maybe she was trying to show off that this truly was a real person and not just hot air.
She rattled off a complete litany. He was from Hawaii. He went to school in California. He lived in Chicago. He was soon to be elected to the legislature. "Have no doubt: he is one of us, a Soviet."
At one point, she related some sort of San Francisco connection, but I didn't understand what the point was and don't recall much about that. I was just left with the notion that she considered the city to be some sort of a center for their activity here.
Since I had dabbled in languages, I knew a smattering of Arabic. I made a comment: "If I remember correctly, 'Barack' comes from the Arabic word for 'Blessing.' That seems to be an odd name for an American." She replied quickly, "Yes. It is 'African'", she insisted, "and he will be a blessing for world Communism. We will regain our strength and become the number one power in the world."
She continued with something to the effect that America was at the same time the great hope and the great obstacle for Communism. America would have to be converted to Communism and Barack was going to pave the way.
So, what does this conversation from 1992 prove?
Well, it's definitely anecdotal. It doesn't prove that Obama has had Soviet Communist training nor that he was groomed to be the first black American president, but it does show one thing that I think is very important. It shows that Soviet Russian Communists knew of Barack from a very early date. It also shows that they truly believed among themselves that he was raised and groomed Communist to pave the way for their future. This report on Barack came personally to me from one of them long before America knew he existed.
Although I had never before heard of him, at the time of this conversation Obama was 30+ years old and was obviously tested enough that he was their anticipated rising star.

Right on, @Jazzhead. The most fundamental obligation of any government is to protect the country's territory. A government which cannot accomplish that, or worse, *will* not accomplish that, is simply not needed by the people. If the FedGov won't do this, then let's turn out the lights.

Correct. And Pelosi the communist, supported Obama when, Obama did it! Veterans could not go to memorial's, kids could not tour W.H. with his sequester. It is all temp. and everyone affected, receive their PAY later. Social security still is paid, police & firefighters still paid. CONGRESS....NOT PAID. P.S. I was wrong about congress. Ok ... I went back and watched the whole thing. I have to give Trump credit for keeping his cool. Nancy's biggest message is that she didn't want to discuss this issue within the public eye and Chuckie wanted to make sure that everyone knew that if the government was shutdown it would be Trump's fault which he was more than willing to accept to obtain border security.
Border security is one thing, building a wall is quite another.

I am not saying this to be cruel or an A--hole. I am convinced that Pelosi is in the beginning stages of some form of dementia. She referred to Trump as "Bush" on several occasions. She began sentences and then appeared to forget where she was going with it. My grandmother and MIL showed similar symptoms before their diagnosis.

So, so good. I also was glad to see it. But with Schumer's smirk you could tell that they would immediately spin it to their liberal base also. In politics all things spin.
It doesn't seem that it takes much to get people excited. Trump can make some forceful talking points to Chuck and Nancy and people are in full worship. Same with Lindsey Graham opening his mouth. If it isn't full amnesty he's king for the next month. For me to even cheer it takes full action.

He's not going to budge unless the DEMS get something out of it. IF Trump goes back to giving them DACA in exchange for the wall, he's lost. IF the DEMS want amnesty for the wall, he's lost. Like it or not, the DEMS are in the drivers seat on this one and Chuckie and Nancy know full well, if Trump doesn't succeed now before the new Congress is sworn in, he won't get his wall anytime soon. Trump Circumvents Dems, Border Wall Funding Found Without Shutdown
Instead of forcing a partial government shutdown, in true negotiator style, the president has announced that the Border Wall funding can be gotten in other ways, making democrats look rather idiotic.

President Trump, in masterly negotiator style, has avoided a government shutdown and announced that the funding for the border wall has been found in other ways.

Although the media is claiming that President Trump caved, a government shutdown has been avoided by the White House.
Sarah Sanders announced this morning that President Trump has found other ways to get the money needed to properly secure the sovereign border of the United States, all without childish democrat cooperation.
Sanders’ comments come four days before large portions of the federal government would have been shut down for lack of funds.
President Trump has asked for a meager $5 billion to build the border wall, a very, very small amount of money considering the wastes of the previous administration.
Democrats, in typical partisan fashion have vowed to oppose all efforts to prevent illegal criminals from entering the country.
But, Sanders told reporters, “We have other ways that we can get to that $5 billion.â€
“At the end of the day we don’t want to shut down the government, we want to shut down the border,†Sanders said.
“There are certainly a number of different funding sources that we’ve identified that we can use, that we can couple with money that would be given through congressional appropriations that would help us get to that $5 billion that the president needs in order to protect our border,†she said.
“We’ll continue to have these conversations with both Senate and House Republicans and Democrats. Our team has been in constant communication,†Sanders said. “We’re going to continue to do that. I’m not going to negotiate here, but we’ve been talking to them just as recently as this morning.â€
So, rather than give democrats the ammunition to claim that President Trump is obstinate and opposes to the function of the government, he has pulled the proverbial rug out from under their feet and taken away their leverage.
The border wall will be funded, with or without democrat support, and Donald Trump has shown, once again, that he is above the political maneuvering, meanness, and selfishness that characterizes liberals.

That doesn’t really mean anything. However, what is funny about the letter of intent is how Giuliani is running around talking about how meaningless they are. Now, all the defense contracts Trump has said are so important between the US and Saudi Arabia are based on letters of intent, that extend out for a decade. So, it will be funny to see how they try to defend their legitimacy on one hand and dismiss it on the other.
