Knowing her family’s history of heart conditions, Tiffany Narcisse made it a priority to bring her children — who both play in the band for the Houston ISD — to get EKG screenings at Delmar Stadium Saturday morning.

More than 400 of HISD’s 23,000 student athletes showed up for the free screening provided by Robert Horry Sports Medicine at St. Joseph Medical Center. About 20 returned abnormal results.

“I take them yearly to get their physical, but I’ve never gotten their hearts screened as far as purposely going to get an EKG,” said Narcisse, an HISD employee. “There’s a series of heart disease in the family so it’s important that we stay on top of our health and our kids’ health to make sure they’re healthy enough to play these different sports and activities.”

The screenings — which only took a couple of minutes and produced same-day results — have become a priority over recent years as a number of Houston-area athletes have collapsed from cardiac arrest. Crosby ISD student and football player Cody Stephens, for example, died in May 2012 died from sudden cardiac arrest due to an undiagnosed heart condition.

Stephens’ family, especially Cody’s father, lobbied for a bill, now known as Cody’s Law, that gives students the option of getting EKG screenings as part of their physical exam starting in the upcoming 2019-20 school year.

Considering these can be done for next to nothing, am surprised that this is now just happening.
