Leon Payne, the "Blind Balladeer"; some fine stuff coming out of Alba, Texas. He has a song called "Psycho"; I've got to think its fashioned after the movie by the same name. I was unsure about posting it though. Eddie Noack had a minor hit; good song though. A modern version by the Bourbon Beasts is good.

They are from Hungary: https://www.midi.com.au/rhythm-sophie-tom-stormy-trio/  , I guess, it's not always easy to tell.  I've already been wrong once on this.

Ooops, I had to add on, he's one of the favorites of many, it's this guy's birthday, meaning Little Walter :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qoa4uQbYojI

Also, on Chess Records, there is the movie "Cadillac Records" based on Chess Records. There are even some clips at youtube from the movie but I don't know how much of the movie is true and what it shows might make one question some of the legends that we listen to today.  Still, probably worth seeing for folks if they get a chance, it's got Chuck Berry, Little Walter and the rest.

Speaking of the classic girl-groups, when a girl-group legend teams up with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band,
the net result takes Billy Joel to school. (For the life of me I still can't figure why this one didn't get any chart
action and had to be withdrawn almost within a blink . . .)

News from Alanis Morisette's camp regarding her former manager:

Isn't it moronic: Morissette manager sad over 'stupid' theft (https://www.yahoo.com/music/isnt-moronic-morissette-manager-sad-over-stupid-theft-074918634.html)

Quote
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Alanis Morissette's meteoric rise to fame put her in need of someone who could
wisely invest her fortune for her future.

She thought she found that person in Jonathan Todd Schwartz, a money manager to the stars, who earned her
trust and assured her that her nest egg was secure and growing.

But even as she was repaying the favor by singing her hits at a benefit for a charity Schwartz founded, he was
pocketing royalties from her hit 1995 record "Jagged Little Pill" and other albums.

Schwartz was sentenced Wednesday to six years in federal prison for embezzling more than $7 million from
Morissette and others after the singer made a pitch for a lengthy and severe sentence saying he stole more than
her money — he stole her dreams.

"He did this in a long, systematic, drawn-out and sinister manner," Morissette said, adding it would have
bankrupted her within three years had the thefts continued.

Schwartz, 47, who blamed his gambling addiction for the thefts, wept and apologized at the hearing, saying he
took full responsibility for his "stupid" behavior and would live in shame because of it.

"I will spend the rest of my life asking for forgiveness," he said in seeking less than a year in prison.

Prosecutors sought just over five years in prison, but U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee said she thought Schwartz
deserved more time for the "sheer audaciousness of this conduct."

Gee noted that she has criticized federal sentencing guidelines as draconian, but said they weren't harsh
enough in this case. Schwartz's gambling addiction may explain the wire fraud and tax crimes, but didn't
excuse them, she said. She ordered him to pay $8.6 million in restitution.

Schwartz admitted stealing nearly $5 million from Morissette between May 2010 and January 2014 and more
than $2 million from five unnamed clients when he worked at GSO Business Management, a firm that touted
relationships with entertainers such as Katy Perry, 50 Cent and Tom Petty.

Speaking of Doc Pomus, I always loved the story behind his writing the lyric for the following gem: Pomus
was crippled by polio. When he married, it was to a stage dancer. He wrote the lyric to tell her that even
if he couldn't dance, he wouldn't stand in the way of her dancing. According to Lou Reed, who once worked
with Pomus, Pomus actually wrote the lyric on the couple's wedding day . . .

Adele may be the most perfect "music package" of my lifetime. There are a FEW others who can sing as well as she can,but they don't write their own music.

Hard to believe she had her sights set on just being a song-writer,isn't it?

Rush's "Working man" from their "ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE" album.

Listen to Neil Peart on the drum kit. Starts around 9:19.

One of the best drum solos I've ever heard.
And I've been around for a long time.

Oh yeah...

Peart has become pretty much accepted as the greatest rock drummer in history.  Including Bonham, Moon, and Palmer.

Just for fun.

Well, I've up and done it---lucked into a bargain on a vintage Deegan vibraphone (Vibraharp Model 145,
with the bars replaced by the bars from a Deegan 1100; Model 145 last made in 1939) where the guy
wanting to sell was willing to swap me even-up for a Gibson Flying V guitar I didn't really need (not
with four Les Pauls I don't!), and now I can do one thing on my bucket list: teach myself to play vibes.

In 1952, the Great Smog of London killed a bunch of people.

But that's not the only place it has happened. We had it happen in the US; I'm unsure of the city, it might have happened more than once.

I came close to buying a 750 Norton when I was on Okinawa in the mid-60's. Couldn't decide between that or the 500 cc single cylinder Matchless sitting beside it.

So,in the spirit of compromise,I bought a 650 Triumph Bonneville with TT cams and pistons. That SOB would FLY! It idled rough at 1200 RPM's,and I could sit at a stop light and watch the front forks twisting in opposite directions as it idled. It would smooth right out at around 130 mph, though.

I hated to sell it,but after getting transfered back to Ft.Bragg after going to VN,I had a rectifier blow in the electricial system in Warsaw,NC (knew a girl there) on a Sunday morning heading back to Bragg. Can you imagine trying to buy a rectifier in Warsaw,NC on a Sunday? Had to either park the bike somewhere and hitchhike to Bragg and wait until the next weekend to come back after it,or sit tight and wait until Monday morning to buy one and ride the bike back. Ended up having 1 day of "bad time" because of that, and had to serve one more day before being discharged because of it.

Ended up selling the Triumph a couple of weeks later for $200 more than I paid for it new,and buying an original 52 Harley panhead in Clinton,NC (I knew another girl there) for $250 and riding it back to Bragg. No more rectifier or any other electrical worries. I could use small block chevrolet plugs and points in it. Owned nothing but Harley's since.

Fine story, well, we've been missing @EasyAce  for a day or two. Probably just busy with other things. I thought we'd see posts from yesterday for Muddy Waters.
@sneakypete @TomSea
I actually have been busy the last couple of days---I satisfied one of my few bucket list items,
swapped one of my guitars even up for a reconditioned 1939 Deagan vibraphone, and began
teaching myself to play. I'd always wanted to play a second instrument and I've had a thing
for the vibraphone for years.

Oh, I knew the Beatles did it but thanks for telling us what is garbage. Our tastes aren't as refined.
Far as I know the Beatles played "Where Have You Been All My Life" during their 1961-62 sets
in Liverpool and Germany but dropped it from the set lists some time in 1962. They did revisit
a lot of that material during their BBC appearances, but no version of "Where Have You Been
All My Life" other than the Star Club material has yet shown up on CD. I have both volumes of
The Beatles Live at the BBC and "Where Have You Been All My Life" isn't anywhere, but
the second volume includes a live performance of "Anna."

Gerry and the Pacemakers cut it for their first British album---Gerry Marsden sings it well but
the band really isn't equal to him on it---and the Searchers did a version, too, but I didn't think
it suited their style as well as other R & B material did. Gerry & the Pacemakers did a lot
better version of another Arthur Alexander number, "A Shot of Rhythm and Blues," which kicked
off that first British album with a bang. (The Beatles did a version that turned up on the BBC
sets, but theirs wasn't quite as punchy. As if they needed it, considering what they were doing
by themselves as songwriters even then . . .)

He was indeed the co-writer, with Barrett Strong. Gladys Knight, to whom Whitfield first gave that song,
had this to say about working with it, which tells you something about how strong it was even in its
embryonic stage and how smart Whitfield was---when he picked the right group for a song, he let
them have their heads with it:

Quote
When we got that song, it was nowhere near the song it ended up being. Norman approached
us with it and said, "I got a great song that I think will work for you guys. See what you think about it,
take it home." We lived with that song at home, on the road, we ate, slept, everything with it for two
months. We brought it back for Norman one day the way we had done it . . . He went into the studio
that minute, put Smokey [Robinson] out so we could go upstairs and record! We didn't have anything
to do with the writing, but the structure is so important in production. We tore it apart, we did all
the little things.

Gladys Knight & the Pips, "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwPKW6VF8Ys)

For me, though, these, too, are Whitfield's masterpieces:

The Temptations, "Smiling Faces Sometimes" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_s9QFJUTZ4)

The Temptations, "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzGiIbekAtc)

BTDT

Before the gig, the band leader chats up the singer.

"Tonight, when we do Night and Day," he tells her, "I want you to sing the second verse first, and then break into the bridge one bar early. Transpose the bridge up a minor third, but then back down again for the last three bars of it. Then add a 5/4 bar going back into the first chorus, singing on only off-beats. During the sax solo, hit the bridge a bar-and-a-half early, interrupting the solo, finish the first verse, go to the coda a bar late, and then keep singing for 3 beats after the rest of us have ended."

Her eyes widen and she says, "That's way too hard, I can't do all that."

He says, "Oh don't sell yourself short. You did it last night."

The photo came up in my cheezeburger daily photos. It matched my mood. I pretty much loved this band during a certain time of my life when I was younger and smarter than I am now. :)

Thank you for posting. I miss the bands from the mid to late 70s , 80s and some stuff from the 90s.

@TomSea
I was a little surprised that they didn't have "End of the Line" in the set list when I saw them at that concert.

But they did have this . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0UvZIZLUTo

. . . though in the version they played at the concert I saw, Phil Manzanera's guitar solo morphed into a kind of
Pink Floydian excursion into ethereal sound blocking and a comparable solo from saxophonist Andy Mackay, before
it finally morphed into "For Your Pleasure." I wish they'd recorded that one, it was breathtaking.

Andy Mackay, by the way, made a terrific solo album in the mid-1970s, In Search of Eddie Riff . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyC18keU7LI

Mackay cut a version of this song on that album and played it live with Roxy on that '76 tour . . .

There's a family Bible on the table
Its pages worn and hard to read
But the family Bible on the table
Will ever be my key to memories

At the end of day when work was over
And when the evening meal was done
Dad would read to us from the family Bible
And we'd count our many blessings one by one

I can see us sittin' round the table
When from the family Bible dad would read
And I can hear my mother softly singing
Rock of ages, rock of ages cleft for me

Now this old world of ours is filled with trouble
This old world would also better be
If we'd found more Bibles on the tables
And mothers singing, rock of ages cleft for me

I can see us sittin' round the table
When from the family Bible dad would read
And I can hear my mother softly singing
Rock of ages, rock of ages cleft for me
Rock of ages, rock of ages cleft for me

Ahhhhhhhhhhh, so he was the one! I must remember to thank him for that . . . not. ;)

Welch really got hurt when Archie Bleyer decided to close down the Cadence label he, Bleyer, created
in 1952. Not long after that, Welch was shopping for a new record deal when he got drafted; he eventually
signed with Kapp, then Atlantic, then he took time off to re-think his career. It proved a mistake; he never
quite regained his early momentum. Sad for a guy who was once thought to be the Johnny Mathis of
doo-wop singers . . .

@EasyAce

"CHARLES" Mingus??

I thought he was always called "Charlie" Mingus?
He actually preferred Charles, and on his albums he was usually billed as "Charles Mingus" or just
"Mingus."

His idol was Duke Ellington, yet he's also the only musician Ellington ever fired from his band,
personally, when Mingus got to spend what turned out a very short spell with the Ellington band in the
early 1950s.

Yet they recorded together in 1962, in a trio with Max Roach, for the album Money Jungle---
on the cover of which may have been the only time Mingus was billed as "Charlie Mingus" on a
record cover:

This song was the (PERFECT) opening music to a episode of Criminal Minds titled "Our Darkest Hour" that aired 26 May 2010. It stars Tim Curry as the serial killer, and you ain't seen scary until you have seen Curry playing that role. IIRC,he played a serial killer named Billy Flynn on 3 episodes, and each time he had me running around the house to make sure the doors and windows were locked.

And I have to admit I was shocked to find out it was Leonard Cohen that wrote and performed it. I honestly thought it was Tom Waits.

Oscar Worthy performance despite it being episodic teebee. Curry got robbed when he didn't get a Oscar for Best Male Actor for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and has been getting ignored by award committees ever since. I suspect part of that may have originally been because he was just a little bit TOO believable as Doctor Frank-N-Furter.

Thanks Pete.

Amazon has a pricing floor policy of $0.99. Authors can't set their retail price beneath it.

However, Amazon will match the lowest price of an author's book Elsewhere online.

Which is a part of the reason I went with another big distributor, to get it down to free as a hook for the series.

However #2:

Last week I ran across a storm of smoke and thunder online from other writers howling about Amazon changing the way their 'Buy' button works.

Something about referring customers elsewhere rather than price matching it themselves.

Gonna wait till the smoke clears before I get all wrapped up in chasing rumors about it.

Thanks Again.

George Strait, fine song interpreter, I don't know if he ever wrote his own as say Johnny Cash or Merle Haggard did but no conversation can really start on George Strait imho, without his most enduring song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZBf16B5vhs

"The Chair" is a favorite of many as well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQB6W22Lk7k

Also sang Tommy Collins songs like "If you aren't loving, you aren't living". I've got some GS, "Baby Blue" might sound a bit corny nowadays, but I can enjoy it.

So how does that 53 #1s by George Strait look? Well, Conway Twitty had 55 and possibly more might come to George. Conway Twitty wrote a lot of his own songs even if I'm not a big fan of his, that's admirable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN2tdIf52QA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rm5-sZLBPfs

This was a good song performed by Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn.

Conway Twitty was a bit of a star in the 1950s; so he goes back, I think first a sort of rock and roll artist who then went into country.

It's surprising that someone would give that write up of George Strait and not even list his signature song "Amarillo By Morning".  Sounds like someone just copied something from a list. "The Chair" is his signature song too. I wonder if some people have actually ever purchased any George Strait songs or are they just posting off the internet or newspaper.

Additionally, country now rates songs on air play time and not on records sold.
Garth may appeal to some people, I won't knock him, he ma;y be the most successful country artist of all time but no way will I believe he compares to the truly great ones.

Oh well, at least we can learn these things from a fan's website. That'll learn ya country music.

If you have "someone" in mind, perhaps you should quote or ping that "someone".

I listed the songs that I did, as a representation of his #1 songs; his first, his last, and one from the middle. I mean, I guess I could have found links for all 60 of his #1s, but I thought that would have been excessive.

Apparently the 60 #1s are from "all major charts", according to a bit in the Wiki entry for the song, "Give It All We Got Tonight," here. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Give_It_All_We_Got_Tonight#Commercial_performance)  Counted that way, "Give It All We Got Tonight" was his 60th #1, as it reached that spot on the Mediabase chart. Ghost Bear largely accosted someone in the Juke Box thread, singling them out.  Lording some great knowledge of country music because one is from Texas; wasn't a kind remark, maybe expects a repeat of the incident.

Then, posted people for the expertise in country music who self-publish or like yesterday, George Strait and yet, what was posted appeared to be little that was from the heart and just relaying info off of a blog it appears and even with that admission, "a fan's blog", so, Ghost Bear appears to believe he/she has the right to walk over people with no response.

@sneakypete
@Ghost Bear

I will say, in this thread, vs. the Juke Box thread, I have moderator's rights and any impolite posts runs the risk of being deleted. I am sorry this thread is locked, I will not read rude posts too by the way. I think posting etiquette should be respect for others.

Then, too, the music that two people are posting is from Texas, fine... but then, out of that per country music, that dirty song was posted that got deleted. Kind of makes one wonder. And that song likely wasn't respectful of country music.

@TomSea and @sneakypete , since I can't respond on the thread where the conversation started as it's been locked, I'll respond here. All I will say is this: I obviously rub @TomSea the wrong way, so I'll refrain from posting on the music threads in the future.  :seeya:

I will say, in this thread, vs. the Juke Box thread, I have moderator's rights and any impolite posts runs the risk of being deleted. I am sorry this thread is locked, I will not read rude posts too by the way. I think posting etiquette should be respect for others.

Then, too, the music that two people are posting is from Texas, fine... but then, out of that per country music, that dirty song was posted that got deleted. Kind of makes one wonder. And that song likely wasn't respectful of country music.

@TomSea

Tom,you are a moderator, and if in your judgement a post needs to be pulled or a thread shut down, pull the post or shut the thread down. Use your own best judgement.

I guess I wasn't paying any attention because I didn't even notice a song being pulled.

I will add that it would be an appreciated courtesy if you or any other moderator locks a thread that you start a new thread right away to replace it. Name it  "XX May 2017 Music  Thread B","XX May Music Thread 2017,Part 2" or anything similar to identify it as a new thread, though.

The  Wabash Cannonball may be as old as 100 years, that's how one can listen to say, country music for their whole life and still enjoy these gems. I guess some people must think country music started in 2000. I'd like to see that same attitude with blues, soul, jazz.

Actually, Stevie Ray Vaughan is considered one of the giants of Texas blues. (So is Freddie
King.) Chicago's blues clubs and festivals hosted numerous bluesmen who weren't considered
Chicago-style bluesmen as well as those who were.

The spotlight this month is on none other than Roscoe Robinson.  If you are familiar with the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi or the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, then Roscoe Robinson should be no stranger to you.  He has the unique distinction of having sung with both sets of blind boys.  He was with the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi for about twelve (12) years.  He was with the Five Blind Boys of Alabama for about 20 years.

A lot of people have probably heard about those "Blind Boys of Alabama".

Sometimes it feels like this world is spinning faster
Than it did in the old days
So naturally, we have more natural disasters
From the strain of a fast pace
Sunday was a day of rest
Now, it's one more day for progress
And we can't slow down ?cause more is best
It's all an endless process

[Chorus]
(Well) I miss Mayberry
Sitting on the porch drinking ice-cold cherry Coke
Where everything is black and white
Picking on a six string
Where people pass by and you call them by their first name
Watching the clouds roll by
Bye, bye

Sometimes I can hear this old earth shouting
Through the trees as the wind blows
That's when I climb up here on this mountain
To look through God's window
Now I can't fly
But I got two feet that get me high up here
Above the noise and city streets
My worries disappear

[Chorus]

Sometimes I dream I'm driving down an old dirt road
Not even listed on a map
I pass a dad and son carrying a fishing pole
But I always wake up every time I try to turn back

[Chorus]

Was a hit in the 2000s, #1 on this day in fact. In the '90s, I was in a city, in the suburbs, I saw a little boy, 9-ish probably, walking his dog in a green grassy field and I thought to myself, that's the way America should be.  The above has a good message, rhythm-wise, I'm a bit more indifferent but... this song captures a bit of the same ethos and I thought it is generally good all the way around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1sbjI_Ggqc

Song written by Mac McAnnally, I thought I heard a version where the state mentioned was actually Mississippi; so I may have heard a different rendition.

Apparently, some want us to play newer music, so:

Also on today's date:

* Bob Dylan is bar mitzvahed, 1954.
* In 1959, Ornette Coleman records "Lonely Woman" and "Congeniality," two key selections on his groundbreaking
The Shape of Jazz to Come
* Bruce Springsteen cuts his first record, in 1966, as a member of the Castiles, the unreleased "That's What You Get."
* Count Basie issues one of his extremely few recordings in a trio format, For the First Time.
* Thirty-three years after cutting that unissued Castiles record, Springsteen and the E Street Band sell out a 15-concert
stand at New Jersey's Continental Airlines Arena.

Thanks for the Morrisey note Suppressed.

On a related note, Clapton I believe ran into some controversy with some support for the ideas of Enoch Powell. I'm not going to get into specifics because I don't know much about the situation, it refers to it in his wiki bio for those curious: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Eric_Clapton (in all fairness, that might have been about different immigrants back then too, at least in part).

Anyway, apparently the BeeGees spent some time in Manchester, so I always thought they were just an Australian group but here, wikipedia lists groups from there, Oasis is a famous one obviously.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_music_artists_and_bands_from_Manchester

It really shows how many bands and musicians we don't know about, I know a few of the other names.

Oh, and 10CC are on the list,  I believe they are from Stockport actually but it is in the area.

Images above from biased BBC, a swift little conservative website I have cited before, they are a bit of a watchdog on the tax payer (or citizen) funded BBC.

Beloved Austin Musician Jimmy LaFave Dead at 61

By Annie Reuter May 23, 2017 3:06 PM

Austin-based musician Jimmy LaFave died on Monday, May 22, after a year-long battle with cancer. He was 61.

The Austin-American Statesman reports that the Oklahoma native moved to Texas in the 1980s. He remained performing up until days before his death. His nephew, Jesse LaFave, confirmed the news of his passing at his home Monday evening. He was surrounded by family and loved ones.

It sounds like Waylon Jennings lived hard, I don't know personally, he died in 2002; he suffered from diabetes. His wife was Jesse Colter, since then, Jesse had a release of music based on the Psalms which has received positive reviews.

It is (http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq340/JoeSalazr/Bocephus.gif)'s Birthday.  I'll take even early Hank Williams Jr. music generally; though some of his later songs merit a mention. This song is used in Kelly's Heroes but I'm not sure if the movie version was sung by him.

Not sure what you mean. The group was formed in Winnipeg, Canada in 1963...Allan "Chad Allan" Kobel, Randy Bachman, Garry Peterson, Bob Ashley & Jim Kale. They recorded as The Reflections and Chad Allan & The Expressions. In 1966, Burton Cummings replaced Ashley & Allan left shortly thereafter. Shakin' All Over was in 1965. Their bigger hits started with These Eyes & Laughing in 1969.

It's pre-Guess Who, they would play that in concert too. I think that's clear, it's even written on that video "Guess Who?".

Yes, it was before the name change when they were Chad Allan & The Expressions which is also on the video that I posted. As I mentioned, Garry Peterson was in "both" groups.

Gregg Allman, Southern Rock Pioneer, Dies at 69
Chris Morris

Music Reporter

May 27, 2017 | 12:34PM PT

Gregg Allman, whose hard-jamming, bluesy sextet the Allman Brothers Band was the pioneering unit in the Southern rock explosion of the ‘70s, died Saturday due to complications from liver cancer, his longtime manager, Michael Lehman, confirmed to Variety. He was 69.

As recently as April 24, reports surfaced claiming Allman was in hospice, although Lehman denied those reports, which Allman then substantiated in a Facebook post. However, he had suffered a number of ailments in recent years — including an irregular heartbeat, a respiratory infection, a hernia and a liver transplant — and cancelled many scheduled tour dates in recent months for health reasons. Lehman said that Allman’s liver cancer recurred around five years ago, but the singer chose to keep the news private.

Allman completed a solo album, “Southern Blood,” that is set for release late this year. Lehman said they received some final mixes for the album on Friday, and Allman listened to them the night before his death. He added that Allman passed away with his family nearby, and was “at peace.”

@austingirl
What I loved about Gladys Knight's first shot at the song---writer/producer Norman Whitfield
let her and the Pips handle the song's vocal arrangement (Knight swore they lived with the
song for a month before they cut the single), and they leaned on their gospel background
to do it, while Whitfield was smart enough to do with them on "Grapevine" what Atlantic's
Jerry Wexler did with Aretha Franklin after she left Columbia with a career in crisis: put
them back in church. Gladys Knight & the Pips' "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" was
probably the closest Motown got to putting that kind of raw church or church-inspired music
into the top ten throughout the 1960s. (Motown historiographer Nelson George nailed it:
the Pips weren't put on the [Motown subsidiary] Soul label by mistake.)

They changed almost completely not long after that, were huge in England, couldn't really
catch on again in the States, but their live album was a pretty good example of how they

Pictures of Matchstick men always struck me as being a vastly underappreciated piece of music. Off the beaten track in some respects, but pretty much perfect in every way. Music is supposed to move you and create paintings in your mind, and this song certainly does both.

ROLF Harris is a free man after a jury today failed to reach a verdict in his indecent assault trial.

The 87-year-old from Maidenhead, Berks, had been accused of indecently assaulting three teenage girls, the youngest of whom was 13, at public events between 1971 and 1983.

It's a nice little song. Did they not find any wrongdoing ever that he did? I know he was in the news.  It's good if they did not find him guilty, one is not sure what to make of these things, maybe his name was needlessly dragged through the mud.

I've loosely been following the case. Back a few years ago, they discovered that quite a few UK media personalities were total creeps, and worse. Jimmy Savile is the most infamous example. Harris got caught up in that same dragnet.

With Harris, though, the case always appeared quite weak at least to me, and given that the prosecution doesn't see any need to press for a retrial even if they could, it tells me that they know it probably won't stand.

For the Grease generation, Olivia Newton-John's illness is hard to accept

The news that the Grease star's cancer has returned grips women of a certain age who grew up looking to her as something of a lodestar of our own happiness

I know it so well. Every frame of it. Even now, if I chance upon a screening of it on TV, or call up key moments on YouTube, the magic still remains.

A film critic once called Grease “an ode to young love that never gets old,” which is a pretty fair description. There is Olivia Newton-John playing a teenager (she was actually 29 at the time of filming) skipping across the school yard in that yellow cardigan, her knowing refrain (“He showed off, splashing around”) a hilarious counterpart to John Travolta’s braggadocio (“I saved her life, she nearly drowned”).

So, let's hope for her recovery, I've seen these kinds of relapses before.

A bit of a children's song to me, because we all learned this, a bit of their signature song as well, I thought.

Just a great song written by Gordon Lightfoot:

Birthday related and honorable mention to the Style Council which was the post-Jam band, Style Council grew out of the Jam... not sure of the details.

The Jam do a good version of David Watts (Kinks), the Jam would probably fit into being called New Wave, I have friends who are really big fans of theirs'
