5 keys to 'Game of the Century': Anonymous coaches explain how LSU can finally beat Alabama

Pete Thamel     |     Nov 7, 2019, 3:55 PM

This season’s “Game of the Century” is upon us, with No. 2 LSU visiting No. 3 Alabama this weekend. Yahoo Sports spoke to a half-dozen coaches and scouts about the matchup. Here’s their unfiltered version of what will be the keys to the game.

Slow the receiving Tide

Alabama’s offensive identity has changed dramatically, as the Tide’s offense revolves around four elite receivers – Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith, Henry Ruggs III and Jaylen Waddle. They’ve combined for 142 catches and 24 touchdowns, the engine behind an offense that’s No. 2 in scoring (48.6) and No. 5 in passing yards (338.6).

“That’s the best collection of wide receivers in the history of college football,” said an opposing assistant. “They all run 4.3 and are electric and explosive. From a football perspective, it’s kind of special.”

What makes the receivers so difficult to stop is they play interchangeably, so it’s difficult to focus on shutting down one because they’re constantly moving around. Star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa accentuates the talent of the receivers with more than just his 74.7 percent completion rate.

“I don’t think Tua gets enough credit for how his accuracy aides them,” said another opposing coach. “They run through the catch at full speed, be it bubble screens or an RPO.”  .  .  .

President Trump will attend Alabama-LSU game

WBRC Staff | November 4, 2019 at 3:34 PM CST - Updated November 7 at 2:37 PM

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) - President Trump officially confirmed during a rally in Monroe, La. Wednesday evening that he’ll be attending the Alabama/LSU game in Tuscaloosa on Saturday afternoon.

The confirmation comes after several reports earlier in the week that the president would be at the game.

Wednesday evening, the FAA issued a Temporary Flight Restriction for Tuscaloosa airspace in effect Saturday afternoon and evening.

Kickoff for the huge SEC match up at Bryant-Denny Stadium is Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

4 Bold Predictions for Alabama vs. LSU Heavyweight SEC Matchup

Michael Luciano

Saturday will provide us the biggest matchup of the 2019 college football season so far when Joe Burrow and No. 2 LSU travel to Tuscaloosa to lock horns with Tua Tagovailoa, Nick Saban, and No. 3 Alabama. Given how potent these teams are on both sides of the ball, this game could turn into a Burrow-Tua shootout just as easily as it could a 14-7 slugfest like the Bama-LSU games of yesteryear. While these matchups rarely go according to plan, here's our best stab at what you can expect to see at Bryant-Denny.

4. Both Teams Run For 150+ Yards

@corbe

Thanks for the poll.  As for your four bold predictions, I agree with only one of the four, which my poll vote indicates.  Still pulling for BAMA, but the road team always has the advantage in this matchup.  If the game was being played in Baton Rouge, I would have voted differently.

Lots of LSU fans on the platform.  But I won't be with them this year.  Enjoying my off time.

My wish is LSU, just to make a dent in the dynasty.

My hunch is that it'll be Alabama, and we'll be stuck with them and Clemson in the playoff AGAIN. (Heck, they might put Bama in the playoff again even if they lose.)

Trump gets a warm reception at Alabama-LSU game
By Marty Johnson - 11/09/19 05:12 PM EST

President Trump received a loud, standing ovation at the Alabama-LSU football game Saturday afternoon.

He and first lady Melania Trump were recognized on the scoreboard early in the first quarter of the game.

This is the latest appearance the president has made at a sporting event, though it stands in stark contrast to other, less friendly receptions he's received.

When President Trump attended Game 5 of the Word Series in Washington, he was met with heavy boos and "lock him up" chants.

Alabama just scored, they're only down by 6 if they make the extra point with 14 minutes left.  Great Game!

In the name of diversity, it would be nice to see LSU win it all.  It would be the first team to win a national championship with a non-English-speaking head coach.

We'll see. Still a few games left in the season.

Right now, the ranks of the undefeated are: LSU, Clemson, Baylor, Ohio State, Minnesota. (Not a single Group of Five in the lot this year, and there's still three weeks to go plus the conference championships. Not a good year for the mid-majors.) So if you're a change-of-pace guy like me, you're rooting for LSU, Minnesota, and Baylor.

*LSU: After countless times being just a hair short, if they win out, they break through.
*Baylor: Their comeback story is compelling after a one-win season two years ago. Their biggest challenge will be Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma next week. They win, their chance at the CFP goes way up.
*Minnesota: They're the closest thing to a Cinderella this year. They still have some big challenges ahead of them.
*Clemson: again. yawn. Just pencil them in as the 1 seed in the CFP.
*OSU: Screw Ohio State and their entitled victim mentality. I'm hoping Penn State knocks them off in two weeks and we end up with a clusterbuck for who faces Minnesota (if they sweep the next 3) the Big Ten title... or better yet, both Penn State AND Michigan knock off the Buckeyes and Harbaugh drinks the delicious tears of the Buckeye faithful.

Countless? Not much counting to get back to 2007

OU?  You gotta be kidding.  You are talking about a team barely surviving a 2 pt conversion to win at home against a team they had beaten 75 of the last 83 times, the best record against any FBS teams?

Well, I didn't bother to count. I am of course referring to the CFP era, even though that's only been, what, five years? This'll be number 6, and most of those years, LSU's been that contender which always falls just short. (Penn State in the James Franklin era has fit that description pretty well, too.)

As for Baylor: Oklahoma's record is 8-1. They're ranked in the top 10 right now. After that, it's Texas (above average but still not elite) and Kansas (which has a losing record), which if the Bears are for real, they should be more easily able to beat. They absolutely can sweep the table, but only if they can knock off the Sooners... and if they sweep the table, I think they're in.

Any given Saturday. Remember: margin of victory is not a factor in polling. That's a rule put in to discourage running up the score. A win is a win.

Now come on Auburn, do it again.... we also lost to LSU (by only 3) at Baton Rouge... but who cares if we can beat bama.

Someone should tell that to Ohio State.  Up by two touchdowns, they did an onside kick against 3-6 Maryland, well on their way to a 73-14 blowout.

As a kid, Grandpa took me to the Bama game that Van Tiffin kicked his famous 52 yard fieldgoal in the last seconds of the game... I took the lose well enough until we got on the bus to leave and the Bama fans ragged on us. Yeah, a win against Bama is worth a season of complete loses against anyone/everyone else.

It leaves out my favorite reaction that year, the two girls sitting by each other and the poor Bama girl  has the AU girl yell, "we just beat yall" (and pushes her) .... sorta felt sorry for her. Sorta somewhat... maybe..

Do watch FunnyMaine weekly as it does an Alabama perspective video... sometimes pretty funny.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYoBAWrQ_TU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYoBAWrQ_TU)

The two girls can be seen in this video at 1:07 seconds in.... it is gold how they grab each other yelling for their respective teams....

We do have a fan reaction video but it is private... didn't want it shown, but it is equally funny.

OSU can suck it. I hope they lose everything from here, and every game for the next 10 years at least.

Someone at Yahoo was so anxious to slam Trump that they posted this story without knowing that Mark Ingram is a running back.
