Gov. Greg Abbott has called for a meeting of state officials who could discuss the fate of a controversial Confederate plaque in the Texas Capitol.
On Monday, Abbott sent a letter to the five other governing members of the State Preservation Board, an agency responsible for the upkeep of historic sites including the Capitol and governor's mansion. While the letter did not specify he wanted to discuss the Children of the Confederacy Creed plaque, it was sent amid growing calls for the divisive marker to come down.
"As the Chairman of the State Preservation Board, I hereby call a board meeting for January 11, 2019," Abbott wrote in his succinct letter. "Please coordinate all administrative issues related to the meeting."
Rep. Dennis Bonnen, R-Angleton, applauded the move.
"I commend the Governor for calling this meeting to begin the process of removing the confederate plaque from the halls of the State Capitol," Bonnen, the man Republicans have backed to become the next speaker of the Texas House, told The Dallas Morning News late Monday. "It is historically inaccurate, and I stand by those who have called for its removal."

State government acts quickly when it needs to. That’s why you can tell when state officials don’t think they need to act quickly.
To be clear, this is not about faceless bureaucrats bogging things down. It’s about elected state leaders with faces too politically cautious to make easy decisions.
The governor, the attorney general and presumptive Speaker of the Texas House have lately turned their attention to a controversial and false plaque in the Texas Capitol that commemorates the Civil War.
