Trump defends Syria move: The Kurds 'didn't help us' in Normandy
By Morgan Chalfant - 10/09/19 05:37 PM EDT
President Trump on Wednesday criticized the Kurds, saying they didn't help the United States during World War II and that they were only fighting for their land in Syria during the battle against ISIS.
“The Kurds are fighting for their land,†Trump told reporters at the White House during an event in the Roosevelt Room.
“And as somebody wrote in a very, very powerful article today, they didn’t help us in the second World War, they didn’t help us with Normandy as an example. They mentioned names of different battles. But they’re there to help us with their land and that’s a different thing.â€
Trump did not specify to which article he was referring, but some on Twitter pointed to an article written in TownHall by conservative Kurt Schlichter that included a reference to the Kurds and Normandy.

-
The Kurds didn't help us in Normandy? Why oh why is he giving ammunition to the MSM and the Democrats?
-
The Kurds didn't help us in Kandahar, either.
-
Schlichter was making a tongue in cheek point about the Kurds being allies of convenience for both parties at the moment, which is true. The Hill knows this but of course cannot pass up a chance for a ridiculing headline.
Perhaps Trump should know better than to throw out a quote within providing the context. In doing so he just asks for this kind of treatment.
-
The Kurds didn't help us in Kandahar, either.
You and Trump keep running your mouths trying to justify this insanity and see what it gets you. It's rapidly turning me back into a never Trumper again and I'm FAR from the only one.
Oh! BTW @Right_in_Virginia you don't have even the most remote clue as to what you are talking about here! Not one!

God help us. This man is insane!!!!!!

That loud sound is the crowd laughing at you, and your defense of Trump's idiotic statements that even defy sanity.
-
Meanwhile the Kurds are under attack and atrocities are being committed per Brett Baier

And Turkey is NOT doing what they said they would. Anyone surprised?

My thoughts exactly!

Good grief.
This issue has devolved into utter over-emotional, knee-jerkwad insanity.
Kudos to the anti-Trump leftist propagandists! One more 'cut' successfully administered and manipulated by the rabid leftist faction.
As for all the idiots that have apparently fallen for it.....
consider yourselves at least partially responsible for the fall of America to the leftists when it comes.
Great work, morons.

You are correct...with ISIS stirred up we could very well see the fall of America....oh...that's right, Trump said they would be fleeing to Europe. Got it!

Yet another moron running her mouth about that which she knows absolutely nothing! **nononono*

God help us. This man is insane!!!!!!
That's a given...
But the county will be rid of him by January 2021 or 2025....
The unsettling thought is that there are millions of fellow citizens who are just as crazy or crazier supporting him and who will be with us after he is out of office....
-
Seems crazy to me too!

Our army (during the Revolutionary War) manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports. Of course the Kurds didn’t lift a finger to help us take back JFK from the Limey’s. So F the Kurds and that nasty Megan Markel. But speaking of F’n. That Diana chick was really hot. If she were my daughter, I’d be thinking about dating her. But back to war, was over when the German’s bombed Pearl Harbor? Well it should have been. Just like Puerto Rico, those foreigners in Hawaii have never done anything for us and should have been paying for their own defense. Can’t we put a moat around it and fill it with snakes and alligators? Like I said to Justin Trudeau, “Didn’t you guys burn down the White House?â€. We should build a wall around Canada to prevent that from happening again and make Nickleback pay for it.

The Syrian Kurds are an ally of mutual convenience. They hate ISIS, we hate ISIS. Our goal is to kill ISIS in Syria, so is theirs. Our momentary interest dovetails. As we help the Syrian Kurds they help us. When the fighting against ISIS is over both sides are better off than they were before.
When our mission is accomplished we leave the Syrian Kurds with less ISIS, more money, more training and more military equipment than they had before. How they choose to use this treasure is up to them, but chances are pretty damn good they'll choose to resume their long battle with the Turks. Godspeed to them and may they use our contribution to their efforts wisely.
I simply do not know what else you believe we owe them @Bigun

The mission was almost over. Why should we trust Turkey? Seriously?
-
It is almost like there is something we don't know because the situation is so idiotic
From what I saw Nikki Haley spoke followed by Sasse and Rubio and then most of the others fell in line.
-
PKK are a designated terrorist group but that is a topic in itself.

We owe them plenty @Right_in_Virginia and I do know that I'm talking about! We betray them yet again to appease * that Muslim Brotherhood POS Erdogan! **nononono*
-
Oh by they way. We will be going back. With more troops and more blooshed.

@Bigun
The Kurds have, or had, thousands of ISIS in prison. A bomb was dropped by Turkey today on that prison so the Kurd guards were either killed or had to leave. Consider thousands of ISIS men are out of prison now. I just now heard there are/were 10,000 ISIS in that prison.
CNN is the only news network with a person there. Don't remember her name but she is regularly interviewed as she is on the ground with the Kurds. One time today she was with the Kurds as thousands of cars/trucks with Kurds, plus those on foot, were trying to get out of that particular city. She had asked these Kurds where they were going and they had no destination except to leave the city. They were all in black smoke caused by bombs exploding.
She is in massive danger staying there to report what is happening. A bomb doesn't know the difference between her and a Kurd. This is so horrible.
-
Even Larry Elder seemed to atone as to how bad this was.
OTOH, it seems our soldiers could have been in harms way and were clearly outnumbered. There could bemore here.
It's rightfully stirred up a hornet's nest.
-

Just when you thought someone couldn't make a statement dumber than the one Trump did...

The story tells it, again, we aligned with the PKK.
In Iraq, Kurds and Turks have worked together.
PKK is a designated terror group though, I think it is debatable as to whether they should be.
But innocents should not be hurt no matter what.

So quit lying.

You just violated those laws of God you mentioned.

We owe them plenty @Right_in_Virginia and I do know that I'm talking about!
I've not said you don't know what you're talking about @Bigun I simply asked what more we owe the them; to define "plenty".
They have been fighting the Turks for forty years trying to establish an independent state within Turkey. Do we fight against Turkey with them? Do we help them resettle in Kurdistan, Iraq and bring an end to the killing? Do we convene an emergency session of the UN to carve out a nation state called Kurdistan and relocate all Kurds there? Where would you locate this new member of independent nations?
Just what is it you would like us to do to repay this esteemed band of allies?
-
Next thing Trump is going to say is that they didn't help his campaign.
-
The Kurds didn't help us in Kandahar, either.
When did Turkey help us? They didn't fight in WW2. The real question is what Erdogan promised Trump to start their genocidal assault in Syria?
-
God help us. This man is insane!!!!!!
No other way to describe it.

The Kurds refused to investigate Biden. Are you listening Ukraine and China??? *look*

This statement by Trump is one of his most absurd indeed. He often misspeaks only to have one of his avid followers in here tell us what he really meant to say. Apparently he is heeding the advice of Rand Paul. He's listening to a Senator rather than his military advisors....maybe he did listen to Kushner on this. It wouldn't surprise me.

@libertybele
It's beginning to follow a pattern. First he remains silent on the protests in China other than some kind of vote of confidence that Xi will handle things properly...then he appoints Rand Paul as his point man on Iran and his tone starts changing there...now this debacle with the Kurds.

Next Paul will be telling him to stop building the wall. After all, he wants to "expand" the laws allowing them legal entry!
Gee ... there IS a reason Paul didn't do well in the '16 election!

Read somewhere else on this forum that a 100 Kurds have already died. Wonder how Tump will Tweet in response to that?
