Always nice when others join in, thanks gang, as you know I am not an expert on the era, just a fan. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge on the era. I learn a lot and have fun doing so. Pray your Thanksgiving Day was a good one.

I just heard a great song from the 60s on the radio.

“Go Ask Alice” by Jefferson Starship.

Grace Slick sure could sing.

Awesome stuff Pookie, I didn't know that Mason Williams song was the original, I had only heard the Steamroller cover. Great stuff and even the kids came in to listen.

I didn't care for the Hang em High song, but never have seen the movie and now I want to. Time to visit my friends in low places (and they say likewise of me) and come up with a copy to watch tonight.

Cheers for the great music and movie suggestion my friend !

I believe that Mason Williams was the musical director on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour; I may have seen him debut the song on their show.

I'm pretty sure I saw Hang 'em High. Can't recall the details, but expect that any Clint Eastwood movie of that time to be violent.

If you need a link to the movie pm me Pookie.... Looks like it will be just as you surmised. A mean revenge story... **grins with delight**

Edit: Got to watch it yesterday. I was ok, I have seen better. I give it a 6.5 out of 10 rating. Ending was a little flat.

Darlene Love's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) is a very good Christmas song; she sang it on the David Letterman Show for many years in a row. I saw her in concert in the early 90s which I really enjoyed; got to speak to her & got her autograph.

I agree with your assessment of the Christmas song by Darlene, best one on the album in my opinion. Going in my holiday rotation. Just great mix of lead vocals, background vocals, Piano, bells and that sax player.. perfect flow...

When I saw her in the 90s, it was a one-woman show. She also told many stories. One was about her love affair with Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers...

I  found a radio station that plays only 60s songs and one that plays only 70s. Been listening to the only 80s one for over a year but I’ve been enjoying going back and forth between the other two now when I’m in the mood for which ever decade.

The 60s station is good because they hardly ever play Beatles or Stones, they concentrate on every other band. Except today obviously, they are playing 24 hours on both stations of Beatles.

In the car, I have Sirius-XM. I listen to the 50s station (which actually goes up to, but does not include, The Beatles) & also their 60s station.

Thanks Pookie, I always liked Hawaii Five-O song, but preferred the orchestra version for some reason. It is amazing what they (Ventures) got those guitars to do back then.

Noticed on Freya's thread that "The Zombies" got nominated for Hall of Fame status... I dug up an album or two by them... so I would be better in the loop.

I missed a few days and come back and see yall have posted some great tunes, thanks gang...

I ran across a little ditty that was released in the 80s but featured songs from 60s and 70s and since it was done in Acappella I figured it fit better here than the 80s thread.

In November 1986 British indie band The Housemartins released “Caravan of Love”. The a cappella song was a success, reaching #1 in the UK Singles Chart on 16 December 1986, (only the second a cappella recording to do so, after “Only You” by the Flying Pickets in 1983).

"Caravan of Love" covered here are from The Isley Brothers from the 70s.

"We Shall Not Be Moved" is from traditional folk.

"When I First Met Jesus" is from the group (also Beautiful South)

"So Much In Love" is from Billy Jackson (The Shangri-Las made it famous in the 60s)

"Heaven Help Us All" is by Ronald Miller (performed by Stevie Wonder first around 1970)....

Interesting Mix of 60s songs.... yes, this is not what you expect on a 60s thread but here is a DJ Mix of songs... Includes the below and a few samples for other songs not listed...

Rock Around The Clock – Bill Haley
Wake Up Little Suzie – Everly Brothers
Hound Dog – Elvis
Jail House Rock – Elvis
Summertime Blues – Eddie Cochrane
Splish Splash – Bobby Darin
Great Balls Of Fire – Jerry Lee Lewis
Do You Love Me – Contours;

Various Artists - Dj Serg Extended Jive Bunny Megamix.mp3

Yesterday I heard my two favorite Stones songs in a row- “Paint it Black”, and “Ruby Tuesday “.

If they had added “Mother’s Little Helper” they would have had a trifecta. Instead the third song was “Angie” which is actually from the 70s.

Love the Stones when Brian Jones was with them the best. (before he joined the 27 club)

What happens when I find myself falling down a rabbit hole listening to production music:

Though released in 1962, it is more of a quintessentially 1950s sound if you ask me.

Wow. The phrase “jukebox” made me nostalgic.

Do you remember the little jukeboxes they put in diners? You would plop a quarter in from the table and they had all these 45s in there. A and B sides. It was so much fun to find songs and play them.

Then I thought of the song “Jukebox Hero”

And the line “then the jukebox plays a song I use to know” (they don’t write them like that anymore, Greg Kiln band)

When my sister and I were in high school (I was in college, she was in high school now that I recall)  we knew some kid from school who’s dad had a real jukebox, and his own pinball and pac man games. We thought that was the best house.

Just us here usually, so a little slip of the dress doesn't hurt to much... you know you are the expert here and I am just the student. I get a lot of these from a few blogs I follow as you probable know. Mom had a few things but mostly I am just passing along finds I think are interesting. Every so often me and the kids put the songs in the background when playing a board game or such, just so they can learn the culture they missed. A simpler and sweeter time.

The Wrecking Crew
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZgBexrZvM0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZgBexrZvM0)

Music lovers will be astonished at the influence The Wrecking Crew wielded over rock and pop music in the 1960s and early 1970s. These unsung instrumentalists were the de-facto backing band on hit records by The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Sonny & Cher, Elvis, The Monkees and many more. These dedicated musicians brought the flair and musicianship that made the American “West Coast Sound” a dominant cultural force around the world.

This runs 1 hour 35 minutes, 1 hour 42 minutes with the credits (which I always watch). It takes a commitment of time to watch it, but it was worth it to me.

Duncan and drummer Greg Elmore were previously members of the Brogues, who had a minor hit with . . .

Quicksilver co-leader John Cipollina invited them to join what became Quicksilver not long after that 1965 hit. (Bassist/vocalist David Freiberg completed the group, who'd lost their leader Dino Valenti to a two-year stretch in the calaboose over marijuana. When Valenti returned, reedy voice and songwriting alike, he took the group over completely to sound very different than the jammers who'd first made the band's splash in 1967.)

"I Ain't No Miracle Worker" eventually got a definitive cover from . . .

We can win on a technicality---the Doors' performance may have been recorded in 1969 with the album released in 1970.

B. Bumble & The Stingers-Bumble Boogie ... another cool song I had not heard.

Ventures-Hawaii Five-O ... we always loved this, but was introduced only via the TV show (and remake)

Duane Eddy-Peter Gunn -- That sax is totally gnarly... Was introduced to this song by all things, a 80s video game called "Spy Hunter" that used a bastardized version of it.

Booker T. & The MGs - Green Onions ... another cool song, that I had to stop watching in front of the kids (lol).... got an eyefull (glad Mrs. Sighlass didn't catch me)... I would be doing laundry for a week for that one.

Dick Dale & The Del-Tones-Misirlou ... Great song, think I was introduced to it earlier somewhere.

If there's a pantheon of drummers, Ginger Baker is in it. He transcended being a clock and became part of a song's harmony.

Which shouldn't surprise anyone who knows one of his drum heroes turned out to be Elvin Jones even before Jones became part of John Coltrane's "Classic Quartet."

Ascot Records was a mid-1960s subsidiary label of United Artists Records in the United States. Most of its releases were directed at teens and young adults with Manfred Mann being Ascot's most successful act. But Ascot was just one of many U.A. sub-labels and by 1968 it was discontinued.

Ascot Records was a mid-1960s subsidiary label of United Artists Records in the United States. Most of its releases were directed at teens and young adults with Manfred Mann being Ascot's most successful act. But Ascot was just one of many U.A. sub-labels and by 1968 it was discontinued.

Looks like I am throwing out some more obscure stuff of late (most with a more 50s sound)... Hope yall don't mind... Easy threw out a name I had to look up (Ginger was a reference to hair color now I see)... but I got to listen to a good drummer (I watched a documentary of sorts on Mr. Baker)... Pookie still amazes me in his ability to connect the dots between groups... Thanks gang...

So hope someone gets a smile out of these lesser known groups with the well loved sound of the previous 50s era... I got a kick out of the Debbie Rollins song (He really loves me)...

Aside from the fact that John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote "I Call Your Name" and "I Wanna Be Your Man" (they even finished the latter at the session where the Rolling Stones prepared to cut the song as a single), here's one the Beatles covered during their BBC performances, a Little Eva number written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King . . .

Some lanes shouldn't merge. Like Tony Bennett singing Hank Williams. Like Isaac Hayes singing Jimmy Webb. Love Tony. Love Isaac. But their adaptations don't work for me.

Wow, I noticed the 70s disco picture was featured in the 70s album I put up on the 70s page...

I had a few Spy vs Spy books growing up but that was about the extend of my Mad collection ... I read a few friends books on occasion I visited them... but then again I never quite developed the comic book craze my brother did. I was an outside kid that enjoyed playing in caves and blowing things up more than I should have. I did manage once to burn most the hair off my head (and eyebrows) playing around with rocket engines and fire... @EasyAce

Gotcha, all good (but I liked the first Barbie version, sorry I don't type clearly, but it makes since in my muddled head when I type it)... the song actually has a wiki page entry.... funny the song even has a mobster connection... where the fellow would counterfeit records to avoid paying the artist royalties.  @pookie18

That would be Morris Levy, arguable the single most corrupt man in the history of 1950s rhythm and blues and rock and roll and beyond. (Among other things, it's believed that one of the reasons Alan Freed was indeed on the take at the height of his radio career was because he was into Levy up to his kishkes including the mortgage on his sumptuous Connecticut home.) The best thing to say about him was that he gave his artists creative freedom when it came to making their music. One of those artists wrote an eye-opening memoir including dealings with Levy a few years ago . . .

@corbe

In the early 1980s, Rhino Records---grokking a radio station who had the moxie to present a marathon in which nothing but versions of "Louie, Louie" were played (from Richard Berry's original to the Kingsmen's big hit cover to a fair few hundred more)---produced an album of twelve (I think) such versions, The Best of Louie, Louie.

Considering what's still out there in the way of "Stormy Monday" covers, you could do a similar The Best of Stormy Monday album.

The ringer in my post: Cream. They played the song (and did a helluva job with it) at their Royal Albert Hall reunion shows in 2005 . . . but they never recorded or played it when they were an active band in 1966-68. (Eric Clapton had played it prior to Cream, when he was a member of John Mayall's Blues Breakers.)

Elmore James, "Stormy Monday"

John Mayall with Eric Clapton, "Stormy Monday"

Not to mention a live recording turning up of John Mayall's Blues Breakers doing the song . . . when the Blues Breakers were three-quarters of the founding fathers-to-be of Fleetwood Mac!

@Hoodat

I wore out a copy of Shades of Deep Purple and its followup, The Book of Taliesyn. This is heresy on all the online music/gear/guitar forums, but I still believe the original Deep Purple was far better than the so-called "classic" second lineup.

These were my two favourite songs off those albums:

Late 60s song by Louis Armstrong that flopped in the charts at the time.... 35 years later it was used in a commercial and made it to 3rd in the UK charts...

Not exactly. "What a Wonderful World" actually got no higher than number 12 on the still-young "adult contemporary" chart in 1967, and no higher than number 7 on the same chart when Good Morning, Vietnam prompted the single's re-release in 1988. The Armstrong record that overshadowed anything else he did in the 1960s was, unfortunately . . .

Error 404 (Not Found)!!1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVHkOzVggtI#)

. . . and I say "unfortunately" because despite going to number one on the charts in 1964 (and, ridiculously, winning the Grammy award for the year's best single) it wasn't even close to the quality of what Armstrong did for so many years prior to the 1960s, especially this album of 1954 from which I offer a great taste . . .

Well thanks everyone for the tunes this year... and replies to the tunes... I don't often reply because I don't see myself as knowledgeable enough to... but I listen to them.

Anyhoo... ran across a little odd thing that some Beatles fans might enjoy... just a weird oddity.... seems the Beatles fan club would put out little disks (often floppy disks) during the holidays... Here is a collection of them over the years (60s) .... like I said, only something probable die hard fans would appreciate... I left the art (pics) with it...

Every time someone mentions Nuggets this one becomes my ear worm . . .

Sagittarius, "My World Fell Down"
Error 404 (Not Found)!!1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aprDkTOtSww#)

. . . and if it sounds like a kind-of discard from the Beach Boys's Pet Sounds/Smile era, it's the next best thing: Sagittarius was actually three musicians with Beach Boys connections: Gary Usher (who'd co-written songs with Brian Wilson earlier in the Beach Boys' career), Bruce Johnston (who joined the band first as Brian Wilson's stand-in on bass for Beach Boys tours, when Wilson began making composing and recording his full-time work), and Glen Campbell (before his own fame, he was one of the Wrecking Crew studio musicians who played on a lot of Beach Boys studio recordings and toured with them as their bassist briefly before Johnston got the job full-time), who actually sang the lead on "My World Fell Down," though obviously not in his soon-to-be-familiar baritone.

And, the "G. Stephens" listed as the song's co-writer is probably one Geoff Stephens, who created one of the 1960s biggest by-the-way hits: 1966's "Winchester Cathedral," which inadvertently provided a road map to Monty Python---Stephens wrote "Winchester Cathedral" in the style of the vintage British music hall revues he loved growing up, made the record with studio musicians he dubbed the New Vaudeville Band, and suddenly needed a road band when the thing became an international smash including going number one in the U.S.

Stephens found one, or so he thought, a group of musical satirists using Brit music hall, jazz, and rock and roll as their foundation and calling themselves the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. The Bonzos as a whole weren't interested, but one of their original horn men, Bob Kerr, was, and signed onto Stephens's touring band. The New Vaudeville Band petered out once the "Winchester Cathedral" novelty wore off (they managed two more chart singles in England, though), but the Bonzos endured . . . including a guitarist/keyboardsman who wrote about half their material (trumpeter/vocalist Viv Stanshall wrote the other half), helping their music influence the comedy troupe he eventually joined: the late Neil Innes.

From 1966, when the touring New Vaudeville Band appeared on The Hollywood Palace television variety show to mime two songs---on the night Kate Smith was the show's guest host. (You may notice, too, that the pocket trumpeter who lip-synchs "Winchester Cathedral" has a resemblance to American comedian Larry Storch . . .)

The cartoon balloons they used during the spot were an idea Bob Kerr brought over from the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band he'd left to join the touring NVB; the Bonzos kept it as part of their own stage act for just about their entire existence.

Just in case you're curious, here's a taste of the Bonzos from their first (and best) album:

Can y'all ping me on posts that contain any music or info about Glen Campbell? After he passed, I decided to hop onto YouTube and listen to a few of his songs. I ended up watching about a zillion videos and developed a ridiculous school-girl crush 3333hugs (an embarrassing admission at my advanced age). I don't pay much attention to celebrity or pop culture, so I never knew about the troubled years of his life and was completely ignorant of the Tanya Tucker episode until it became part of the news coverage upon his passing.

Like numerous others, I had little appreciation for his talent when he was living. Once I started digging in, I could have kicked myself for never going to one of his concerts. My BFF went to 3 over the years and said he was a fabulous entertainer. I'm thankful that so many of his performances are preserved on video. If they were vinyl records, I'd have worn them thin by now.  3333hugs

I didn't like this song "My World Fell Down," but I could recognize his voice from the beginning. I've watched all the Glen Campbell bios and extended interviews on YouTube and don't remember his mentioning this. I love learning these little tidbits about his career.

@AllThatJazzZ

Unfortunately I rarely reload songs other than of the 80s due to just not having room to keep all the songs I run across... I run across a 60s song and share here and usually lose it except for a few I keep in a folder on an external drive.

One old blog "With a Song of Life" has a few albums to download, but he offers a very very slow download speed on his shares hoping you will spend money and buy upgrades which he gets a portion of. But if you have the bandwidth and the time, you can download the over time. If they have not expired from the host. Downloading can be a fun game since the servers that host the files are constantly looking to trick you into stuff and pop-up crap (often vulgar) is not worth the trouble to navigate. Unless you have a good ad-block program and know what you are doing, it can be dangerous (spyware, ransomware, viruses, and malware) to download.

https://forwardwiththesong.blogspot.com/search/label/Glen%20Campbell (https://forwardwiththesong.blogspot.com/search/label/Glen%20Campbell)

I unfortunately offer faster downloads, but they only last for 3 days... I will try to remember to ping ya if I do run across some of his songs... but my memory is about as good as Biden's to be honest. I think you can subscribe to threads like this one somehow.. thus you get pings when new stuff is uploaded... I think Pookie does that so he doesn't miss that one gem that eluded him... Both him and Easyace probable have all of us beat with music collections from this time period.

Another trick if you don't have to have the highest quality music is to just download music via videos on YouTube. You can copy the URLs at YouTube and go to one of many online download sites that will convert the videos to Mp3s for ya...

Here is one such site...

https://www.flvto.biz/en55/ (https://www.flvto.biz/en55/)

Paste the URL of your video from YouTube there and check the right boxes (MP3 and accept their cookie box) and hit enter... it will take a minute to convert and then you click "download"... A pop up download will appear and you want to save it to your place you pick on your computer (desktop for me).

And here is some Etta James, because it is Etta James.

One of the comments on this video is the best damn comment I have ever seen or heard of about a singer:

"It like she wasn’t singing... it was her soul crying out in melody."

I love that song. I first heard it on an old pre-Fleetwood Mac recording sung by Christine McVie (Perfect) when she was with Chicken Shack.

While I like old Christine McVie and early FM, there’s simply no comparison to Etta. But the one thing it did do was lead me to finding great blues artists like Etta.

Go to You Tube and check out some of the performances and the people who showed up for Etta's funeral. BTW,Christina Aguilara performed this song at the funeral at the request of Etta's family.

Not a big fan of Aguilara’s vocal gymnastics. But I do like this rather recent version of I’d Rather Go Blind. Much better than Aguilara’s IMO.

@Neverdul

Well, she was singing it at the funeral because Etta's family asked her because the way she sings it was Etta's favorite cover of the song, and the closest to what Etta did herself.

BTW,I am also a fan of Tedeschi and the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

@Neverdul

This is MY all-time personal favorite version of this song. Not only is it live, but you don't have to be all that sharp to see the look in the eyes of her and Dr.John as they are singing to each other,to see "the smoke of distant fires" burning. It seems clear to me they have known each other a LONG time.

BTW,Etta James never performed the studio version of any of her songs on a live stage. She was prone to "go with the moment",as you will see below.

Also,IMHO,there is no finer example of two old pros, doing it live,on stage, than this one.

Fifty-two years after the musicians went into the studio just to jam freely with tape rolling, with no particular regard for commercial considerations (the album became an unexpected best seller in its day, hitting as high as number 11 on the Billboard charts and earning a gold record), these pieces have lost none of their spontaneous beauty (the horns in the first selection were added after the fact before the album's release) . . .

I heard one of my favorite Stones songs on the car radio tonight. I was so happy!

Ruby Tuesday

Why don’t they make songs like that anymore?
