Hurricane Florence strengthens to Category 4, barrels toward East Coast
By Emily Birnbaum - 09/10/18 01:04 PM EDT

The hurricane barreling toward the East Coast has strengthened to a Category 4 with 130 mph winds, according to reports.

Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall somewhere between South Carolina and North Carolina, and areas across the coast will likely be affected by flooding and winds, according to The Washington Post.

The storm's approach has led to a flurry of emergency declarations and requests from states in Florence's path.

Rep. Walter Jones (R-N.C.) on Monday afternoon asked President Trump to expedite a disaster declaration ahead of the hurricane, saying a declaration would "allow much-needed federal resources to be mobilized." Jones's district includes the Outer Banks, an area that is in direct line of the hurricane.

President Trump has canceled a Friday rally in Mississippi due to the approaching hurricane.

South Carolina has also asked for a disaster declaration.

Moving along at a pretty good traveling speed.  Hopefully that will diminish flooding problems.

I'm hoping it doesn't take the right turn on landfall, like the spaghetti models are suggesting.

Navy ships evacuated, nearly 1,000 National Guard troops activated ahead of Hurricane Florence
By Ellen Mitchell - 09/10/18 02:09 PM EDT

The U.S. military has evacuated 30 Navy ships based in Virginia and activated more than 950 North and South Carolina National Guard troops ahead of Hurricane Florence's expected landfall on the east coast.

Spokesman Col. Robert Manning on Monday said that U.S. Fleet Forces Command has ordered all Navy ships in Hampton Roads, Va., out to sea, as "forecasted destructive winds and tidal surge are too great to keep the ships in port."

“Ships will be directed to areas of the Atlantic where they will be best postured for storm avoidance,” Manning told reporters at the Pentagon. “Some units will not get underway due to maintenance status but will be taking extra precautions to avoid potential damage.”

In addition, more than 750 South Carolina Guard personnel were placed on state active duty orders for Florence response after 564 were added Monday.

“The Department of Defense is working very closely with the Department of Homeland Security and is prepared to assist FEMA and our other Federal partners in supporting the States impacted by the storm,” Manning said.

“Our operation centers are in constant communication and are ready to respond and assist with military capabilities.”

Florence is anticipated to possibly develop into a Category 5 an extremely dangerous major hurricane. It was upgraded to a Category 4 storm on Monday, with sustained winds at 130 mph that are expected to increase further.

In anticipation of the damage, North Carolina has activated 200 of its Guardsmen, Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said Monday.

“We have 200 national guard troops that have been activated and we have many more who are there and ready to serve and to be activated when we need them,” Cooper said.

On Saturday, the governors of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina all declared a state of emergency ahead of Florence's landing, likely to hit the ground late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Cooper, hoping to obtain public assistance for the state, also on Monday requested that President Trump expedite a declaration of an emergency for North Carolina.

Trump has canceled a planned Friday rally in Mississippi as Florence barrels down.

Yes – it really ripped up the marina the last time they had a hurricane in the area. Fortunately, he is on ground higher than most in the development. His place won’t flood.

Isabella touched off tornadoes in the area back in 2003.  Most of the home damage in his area was from fallen trees.  The neighbor across the street had their garage cleaved in two by a massive pine.

What's concerning for the general Washington, D.C. region...the ground is already saturated.

This makes it much more dangerous for uprooting trees and of course, flash flooding.

I hate driving along narrow country roads cutting through forests, even in nice weather...let alone in this crap.

I'm too far inland (western PA) to get the brunt of Florence, but our local weather soothsayers are already saying heavy rain from Florence could reach here.  This will be on top of the heavy rain that fell here almost nonstop from Saturday till this afternoon from Gordon.  Some places around me had 8 to 9 inches.  I think my neighborhood might have had around five.  Luckily, I'm not in a flood plain, but  I did get a few trickles of water in the garage.    Next home project will be to get a waterproofer for the basement and garage.

Prayers up for everyone in the path of Florence.  Stay safe.

The old Master Chief is a stubborn one, but I talked to him today and he’s got a ton of provisions, fuel, and a generator.  The development rules require them to keep a certain amount of forestation the property, so the big risk is wind, in his case.

Thank heavens the rain from Gordon has stopped.   Our ground is drenched from 48 straight hours of rain, and we certainly don't need any more.

I don't remember about Agnes, but the worst flooding we had before this weekend was from Hurricane Ivan in 2004.     That one was a doozy.  At the time, I was working in an office building across the street from a river walking/biking trail.  The trail was completely submerged and the street in front of the office building was flooded.  The office building sustained some water damage in the basement -- some records stored there had to be dried out.

Even better, the ducks inhabiting the river were swimming in the flooded trail and street.  Wish I still had a photo of the ducks which appeared in the local paper. It was a funny sight.

Hurricane Florence could be a lot like Harvey. Here’s why.

© Greg Porter/Washington, D.C. Plot compares GFS forecast to the 1981-2010 CFSR climatology for a 21-day period centered on the valid day. By Thursday, the forecast calls for a high pressure system that is would be the strongest for this time of year over the last 30 years. (Tomer Burg)

In late August 2017, Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas on San Jose Island. Over the following five days, Harvey's forward movement slowed to a glacial pace, essentially stopping over the greater Houston area, weakening in terms of wind speed but retaining an immense amount of moisture that eventually fell as rain in catastrophic amounts.

A year later, residents in the southeast and Mid-Atlantic may face the exact same scenario with Hurricane Florence, and the reason will be eerily similar.

A ridge of high pressure, extreme especially for this time of year, will develop just off the coast of New England, shunting the path of Florence toward the southeast coast. The strength of this ridge will be unprecedented in 30 years, according to forecast models.

During Agnes, all of the flood gates were open on the Conowingo Dam in MD, but water was still pouring over the road across the dam, US RT 1.

The Army Corps of Engineers was assessing the dam. There was so much pressure on it, they were considering charges on a portion to relieve the pressure.

Incredible.

In my earlier post about the water lines 1 year after Agnes....The water line was seven autos high, but the other side of the river was at least 1/3 mile away.   THAT is a helluva lot of water.

There's a part where the river is one side and the road you're driving for miles....you get turns getting permission to pass because of all the trucking, etc.. And then suddenly the city appears on the other side of the river...but it still looks like miles away.

IOW...only when your'e actually there can you truly appreciate the calamity of that storm.

Actually, I don't think I've flown AA since 17 years ago tomorrow morning, but back then I used to say that AA had it's own time zone -- 90 minutes later than whatever zone your flight would be arriving in.

I have two daughters in a low-lying part of Chapel Hill NC. Trying to get them to higher ground further west.

About a year ago I ran away from a hurricane that was headed for my house.  Since I live in FL, my initial plan was just to get far enough north that I could go either north or west (or not), depending on how things turned out, w/o getting stuck in traffic getting out of FL.  I learned something.  Traffic really sucked all the way up to I-26 in SC, at which point it was clear sailing.  Night and day difference.   Next time I bug out, if I go north, I'm going to make a point to get that far ASAP.

Your daughters might want to have a similar plan.

Prayers up to all.

I was Charleston, SC, for a mini-vacation when - on the second day of the vacation - they issued the evacuation order for Hurricane Hugo (1989). We had to drive from Charleston to Charlotte in bumper-to-bumper traffic in order to catch a flight home. Thinking you have to outrun a hurricane can be a little frightening.

FEMA official: Hurricane Florence will cause 'massive damage,' including potential loss of life
By Michael Burke - 09/11/18 12:07 PM EDT

Hurricane Florence will cause “massive damage” when it makes landfall this week and fatalities are possible, a FEMA official said Tuesday.

Jeffrey Byard, FEMA’s associate administrator for response and recovery, stressed during a news conference Tuesday that citizens living on the coast in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia should take action to heed local and state warnings.

“I want to impress the importance of our citizens to take action now,” he said. “This is a dangerous storm. This storm will and has the potential to cause loss of life.”

Byard said Florence is the strongest storm to target the Carolinas and “this part of our country” in decades. He added that there is currently nothing projected to weaken the storm and the region will experience power outages, infrastructure damage and damage to homes.

“This will be a storm that creates and causes massive damage to our country,” he said, adding that significant inland flooding is expected in states including Maryland and Pennsylvania.

NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center
1 hr ·
...FLORENCE GETTING BETTER ORGANIZED AND INCREASING IN SIZE...
...LIFE-THREATENING STORM SURGE POSSIBLE ALONG THE COASTS OF NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA...INLAND FLOODING TO FOLLOW...

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect from Edisto Beach, South Carolina, to the North Carolina-Virginia state line, and for Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds, including the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. A Hurricane Watch is in effect from Edisto Beach, South Carolina, to the North Carolina-Virginia state line, including Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. Interests elsewhere in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states
should monitor the progress of Florence. Additional watches may be required later today.

Hurricane Florence is centered at 2 p.m. EDT about 845 miles (1360 km) east-southeast of Cape Fear, N. Carolina. Florence is moving toward the west-northwest near 17 mph (28 km/h). A west- northwestward to northwestward motion with a slight increase in forward speed are expected during the next couple of days. On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas through Wednesday, and approach the coast of North Carolina or South Carolina in the hurricane watch area Thursday and Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts. Florence is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Florence is expected to begin re- strengthening later today and continue a slow strengthening trend for the next day or so. While some weakening is expected on Thursday, Florence is expected to be an extremely dangerous major hurricane through landfall. Hurricane-force winds have expanded outward and now extend up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center. Tropical-storm-force winds have also expanded and now extend outward up to 170 miles (280 km) from the
center.

The next advisory will be issued by NHC at 5 p.m. AST - www.hurricanes.gov (http://www.hurricanes.gov)

The European model just threw a knuckleball:  The storm nears Cape Fear, stalls, then meanders SW to Charleston and eventually to Atlanta.  Forecasters are pretty confident it will approach the NC coastline Thursday evening, but all bets are off beyond that point.

Hubby and I are supposed to be going to Asheville on Thursday. Too far inland to worry about storm surge and such, but I'm not convinced of the wisdom of heading into the dregs of the storm.

Might want to check with the airlines.  We are in Greensboro.  Hubby and brothers were scheduled to fly early Thursday to Buffalo for a family thing.  Airlines called and suggested they reschedule for Wednesday no fee.  Now hubby is getting antsy about leaving me alone with 3 cats and a large dog.

My granddaughter attends a boarding school in Asheville and she is forever getting delayed by weather there as she comes and goes for home leaves.

During this time of year, I like to follow a website (https://spacecityweather.com/ (https://spacecityweather.com/)) for weather updates.  It is geared toward Houston weather and the two meteorologists who run it bill it as "no hype" weather.  One of the meteorologists put together a twitter list of people he trusts with regards to reporting on Florence.  If you are interested in following this on twitter, here is the link:  https://twitter.com/mattlanza/lists/florence (https://twitter.com/mattlanza/lists/florence)

STORM SURGE:  The combination of a dangerous storm surge and the
tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by
rising waters moving inland from the shoreline.  The water has the
potential to reach the following heights above ground if peak surge
occurs at the time of high tide
...

Cape Fear NC to Cape Lookout NC, including the Neuse, Pamlico,
Pungo, and Bay Rivers...9-13 ft
North Myrtle Beach SC to Cape Fear NC...6-9 ft
Cape Lookout NC to Ocracoke Inlet NC...6-9 ft
South Santee River SC to North Myrtle Beach SC...4-6 ft
Ocracoke Inlet NC to Salvo NC...4-6 ft
Salvo NC to North Carolina/Virginia Border...2-4 ft
Edisto Beach SC to South Santee River SC...2-4 ft

The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast in areas of
onshore winds, where the surge will be accompanied by large and
destructive waves.  Surge-related flooding depends on the relative
timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over
short distances....

...Hog farmers along the East Coast were scrambling to drain their waste pools ahead of the storm. Hog farms each have open-air 'lagoons' filled with manure - which turn bright pink due to the bacteria festering in the lagoons.

If the rivers break their banks, or lagoons overflow, affecting local waterways, which could damage to local environment and put drinking water sources and public health at risk.

Flooding could also lead to the deaths of thousands of animals if they cannot be evacuated in time.

Marlowe Vaughan of Ivy Spring Creek Farm in Goldsboro, has spent most of day pumping liquid waste from her lagoons to make more room for incoming rainfall....

There is something most of us don't think about related to hurricanes.

@240B they want mass destruction in the south...i.e. Trump's voting base so they can swoop in with FEMA and all kinds of free government money and get those people dancing like puppets in order to change the voting dynamic.

Media are calling it the storm of a lifetime.  I guess they weren't alive for the past twelve dozen storms, including Hazel, Hugo, Fran, Floyd, Matthew ... not to mention the "once in a millennium" flooding in 2015.  Even the yankees are bored with it by now.

The hype and preaching get worse with every season.  What's next?  Are the media going to shoot at residents who defy evacuation orders?

The media call every storm 'the storm of the century'. They want people glued to their televisions. Not that the media industry cares, but this has caused people to get killed. Because they have heard that so often, and the storm turned out to be manageable, they stopped believing it and refused to leave. Several people have died this way.

The sheer size of this storm is scary enough, even without the projected winds or flooding.  Yikes.  I remember when Ike was approaching the Gulf.  The storm surge preceeded it by a full day, as I recall.  And it completely wiped out most of the houses along the coast.... no trace of what was there left other than the concrete slabs and a few posts.

Our local media does that here when it snows or when it *MIGHT* snow.  It's not like we are in the desert where snow is uncommon.  From November to the end of April, we get snow every year.  I've even seen snow on May 1.  But my point is that, to hear the weather guys/gals and the news readers talk, you would think one snowflake is heralding the Apocalypse.  It's snow, people!

But all that might be because people who live here don't know how to handle snow and don't know how to prepare for it.  They certainly  can't drive in it.  Most don't bother with snow tires or whatever is needed to get their vehicles through snow.  And they insist on going out for such essentials as beer on the rare occasions we do get a lot of snow, instead of staying off the roads so the snow plows can clear the streets, and then they bitch because the roads are snow covered.  Hello?  If you would stay home, the plows can clear the streets, Moron.

So I'm not sure it's all hype for ratings, at least around here, but rather, that we have people with the IQ of a 2-year old who must have their hands held and told in small words how to deal with the adverse weather conditions.

Today, we get weeks advance notice.  People could empty the entire contents of their house in a truck and haul ass.

At the very least, the opportunity to prepare.

...For days, however, Isaac had been receiving cables from the Weather Bureau's Central Office in Washington describing a storm apparently of tropical origin that had drenched Cuba. Although Isaac did not know it, there was confusion about the storm's true course, debate as to its character. The bureau's men in Cuba said the storm was nothing to worry about; Cuba's own weather observers, who had pioneered hurricane detection, disagreed. Conflict between both groups had grown increasingly intense, an effect of the unending campaign of Willis Moore, chief of the U.S. Weather Bureau, to exert ever more centralized control over forecasting and the issuance of storm warnings. The bureau had long banned the use of the word tornado because it induced panic, and panic brought criticism, something the bureau could ill afford. Earlier that week, Moore had sent Galveston a telegram asserting yet again that only headquarters could issue storm warnings....

Yeah, perhaps we all should take a breath. There have been hurricanes since the beginning of time, after all.  I still hope it isn't devastating, but you're right - the worst Chicken Littles anywhere are TV weather forecasters.

If a weather forecaster predicts gloom and doom, and it turns out to be really bad, that forecaster made a name for himself.  If it's not, then it's a wash for him/her.  Best for the weather person's career to err on the side of doom.

They'll be fine if they don't drive through a flood or decide to take up surfing.  They should stock a few days' worth of nonperishable food and liquids.

Think back to the days before weather satellites.

People going about their everyday business and all of a sudden the wind picks up.....

Today, we get weeks advance notice.  People could empty the entire contents of their house in a truck and haul ass.

At the very least, the opportunity to prepare.

This is an amazing time to be alive my friend.  The satellite images are incredible.  Prayers to the east coast.

I don't know if the cam platform is lit at night, (I just discovered the camera) but the sound of the wind is deafening!
(Nice daytime view)
Wonder if it will ride out the storm?

Below are two photos.
One of the platforms location, in relation to the N.C. coast.
The other is the platform where the camera is mounted.

Quote
This ocean cam is affixed to the Frying Pan Tower, 34 miles off the coast of Cape Fear, North Carolina. The tower was built in the 1960s to warn ships of the shallow waters nearby.

Though GPS navigation technology means this tower is no longer used for its original purpose, it's an important ecosystem for marine wildlife (check out the underwater shark cam to see what we mean) and provides a beautiful view of the sun rising and setting over the Atlantic Ocean.

Me too! But if it isn't as bad as they are saying after all the relentless hyperbolic hype, no one will ever believe the weather forecasts again. I'm not at all saying that they are wrong this time. I'm only pointing out that they have done this before, for nothing more than ratings. I'll bet the Weather Channel is killing CNN this week.

I'd rather forecasters error on the side of caution than not.  I live in SWFL and when Hurricane Charley hit, there was only 1 meteorologist that called where it was going to hit correctly. Lots of people were caught off guard as those in the area were told, that it was going to hit way north and it took a different path at the last minute. When a hurricane has the potential to make landfall near you, you should ALWAYS prepare.

Regardless if NC, or SC takes a direct hit or not, storm surge is always a concern.  Most of us who live in hurricane prone areas realize that when you are dealing with the possibility of a Cat 3 or greater, it's time to evacuate. Our last evacuation was for Irma.  Irma hit the area where we live as a Cat 2 and we were extremely fortunate and only lost a bush.  That was it, no flooding, power was only out for 2 days and luckily we had stocked up on gas or we wouldn't have made it back home.  But, on our way back to our home we had to cross areas where Irma made a more direct hit; we knew we made the right decision.  A few miles in either direction or more storm surge can make a huge difference.

You can have an elevator installed. It won't be cheap but it will increase the value of the home. From what I saw of what you posted, your first concern should be a massive security system with movement activated lighting and cameras everywhere. Anytime anyone steps within a hundred yards of your house, all hell should break loose. And you really should consider a few dogs to back up your cat army. Intruders HATE dogs, especially big ones.

Watching the news.  Florence is now a Category 2, but it's huge -- 500 miles across.  Seems none of the weather guessers really knows where Florence will hit or what path it will take.  One forecaster said Florence will hit the Carolinas, veer south into Georgia, then head north-northeast.  Seems to be a guessing game now.

As if people don't have enough to worry about, now concerns are being raised about nuclear reactors potentially in Florence's path:

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) — Time is running short to flee Hurricane Florence, a monster of a storm zeroing in on the Southeastern coast with more than 10 million people in its potentially devastating sights.

Florence’s top sustained wind speeds dropped from a high of 140 mph (225 kph) to 110 mph (175 kph) as its outer rain bands approached the North Carolina coast early Thursday, reducing the storm from Category 4 to Category 2, but forecasters warned that the enormous wind field has been growing larger, raising the risk of the ocean surging on to land.  ...

So far it is losing speed. Down to 12mph and the wind speeds are declining. It is possible that it is a class 1 by now. We don't really know. The government could never admit that because it would make them look foolish in the extreme.

They interviewed a guy who said something similar to that. He said [paraphrasing] If I leave it will take me weeks to get back in. He also said that the storm is so large, just the sheer distance that you have to drive to evade it is impractical. 15 or 20 miles isn't going to do it. Another guy said he didn't know which way to run. They say it is going South one day and North the next.

It's a tough call. I just pray none of the people who stayed get hurt. This thing seems to be unusually unpredictable. They are taking a risk, there's no doubt about that.

If it doesn't move out quickly, the rainfall can be devastating.  Outside of the landfall area, Harvey was not to bad for wind.
Allison never made hurricane status but the slow moving, returning track destroyed much by flooding.

Tropical storm Claudette in 1979 seemed it would never leave. There was a blocking ridge just north of us. Claudette would bounce off of it and come right back over us. I think it hit us 3 times before it finally left.

Claudette produced torrential rains in both Texas and Louisiana when it made landfall. The highest one-day total was reported near Alvin, Texas where 42 inches (1,100 mm) of rain fell. This remains the twenty-four-hour rainfall record for any location in the United States. Two other towns also reported rainfall totals exceeding 30 inches.[6] There was only one death from drowning and Louisiana received only minor damage from up to 15 inches (381 mm) of rainfall.[7] Texas was hard hit by Claudette, with flooding reported in southeast Texas from up to 45 inches (1143 mm) of rainfall. Many residents had to be rescued from low-lying areas that were flooded.[8]

Regardless of wind speed, they're saying the real threat is that this hurricane could plop itself over the NC coast for a period of time - rather than continuing to move inland - and dump as much as 24" of water. I know how horrendous the flooding was in my area when we got the remnants of the 2004 hurricane (Ivan?) and 7-9" of rain.

Harvey didn't break the One Day Record.

https://mashable.com/2018/04/26/kauai-24-hour-rainfall-record/#8YPzEMaWRZqZ (https://mashable.com/2018/04/26/kauai-24-hour-rainfall-record/#8YPzEMaWRZqZ)

A devastating flash flood event in mid-April caused widespread damage on the lush Hawaiian island of Kauai. Now comes word that during the 24-hour period between April 14 and 15, a staggering 49.69 inches of rain fell at a rain gauge about 1 mile west of Hanalei.

If this amount is verified by the National Climatic Extremes Committee, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and serves as a sort of Guinness Book of World Records for weather and climate, it would be the heaviest 24-hour rainfall total ever recorded in the U.S.

The current record is 43 inches, set on July 25-26, 1979, in Alvin, Texas. It would also crush the state record of 38 inches, which was also set in Kauai, back in 1956.

The committee members will review the rain gage to determine if it was functioning properly at the time of the rainstorm. This particular gage is operated by a nonprofit organization called the WAIPA Foundation. It's possible that the committee will conclude that the amount of rain was actually less than recorded, or conversely, that it underestimated the rainfall total.

It's not surprising that a national rainfall record would come from Kauai, since it's rugged terrain contains some of the wettest landscapes on Earth. Mt. Waialeale, for example, receives about 460 inches of rain per year, and is the wettest place in the country.

I think Baytown may have exceeded that total during Harvey.

The highest storm total rainfall report from Harvey was 60.58 inches near Nederland, Texas (Fig.
7), with another report of 60.54 inches from near Groves, Texas. Both of these values (and from
five other stations) exceed the previously accepted United States tropical cyclone storm total
rainfall record of 52.00 inches at Kanalohuluhulu Ranger Station, Hawaii, in August of 1950 from
Hurricane Hiki.

Needs updating post Harvey.

No kidding.  52" storm total at my location per NWS.  New US storm record of 64'' in Nederland is about 30 miles from where I live.

Wish I knew exactly how much fell, but of  course, I sure wasn't going to empty my rain gauge 5 times in the most amazing wall of water from the sky I have seen i my lifetime.

Sustained wind speed has dropped again from 110 to 100. If it drops another 5 it will go to a Category 1 storm. Also the speed is down from 17mph to 5mph.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

I checked it out for all of us.
I did proudly hail at the twilight's last gleaming and it was gallantly streaming.
I'll check it out again at dawn's early light to see if that star-spangled banner yet wave.

It was there at dusk. I'll check it out again at sunrise.

From what I hear that is a photoshop fake video.

BTW, it is a Cat 1 now with wind at 90mph. Once it gets to 75 it becomes a tropical storm. It looks like the brunt is more or less over. Now it is just a matter of how fast it will move overland. Worst case scenario is that it stalls and just beats the crap out of somewhere for a week.

I'm on another web site looking at the hurricane and it has the ability to measure wind-speeds wherever you click. I clicked all over the hurricane and couldn't get a wind-speed over 80mph. Most the speeds were in the mid seventies.

I'm no meteorologist by far, and I don't know the reliability of this other website. But it is weird that there are conflicting reports about the wind-speed of the storm.

Check it out if you want to. Click anywhere on the storm. Click the km/h until it shows mph.

Interested in what our fellow members feel about "Mandatory Evacuations".

Do you agree with the concept?

Or, do you think each family/household should be able to decide for themselves if they want to stay and "ride this one out"?

Where does the government's responsibility end?  Their duty is to protect the citizenry.

But...aren't the warnings 24/7 sufficient?

As a homeowner, why should I be forced leave my home vulnerable to looters?

Or, is that one of the reasons for the mandatory evacuation?  Because they don't trust those remaining behind might turn to looting?

Look for legislation soon that in the even of mandated evacuations, you must sign a waiver if you remain, that your life is at risk.

I would expect the insurance lobby to make sure a clause is inserted that makes payment upon death null and void if they had the opportunity to evacuate.

I think I figured it out. Depending on the height of the measurement and where the measurement is taken on the 360 degree circle of the storm, you can get widely varying results. So, when they say sustained winds at 90mph, without knowing the height and the sector they are measuring, I can't really replicate the result on the website model.

My brain is fuzzy on the details, but during last year's storms, I remember some official saying something like, get out now, but if you choose to stay, don't call for help because we are not going to risk our lives to come and get you.

I don't recall whether anyone did stay, later called for help, but was refused.   Seems to me if that did happen and people died as a result , there would be all kinds of lawsuits.

But it is that kind of tough stance, I wish we would see more of.  It should not be up to government to save people if they don't evacuate and later get into trouble.  The problem is we have too many people depending on government to save them from their own folly.

Florence isn't even a Category 2 hurricane hitting the mainland.

Thank God.  Water recedes.  Wind causes the loss of life.

And thank you for another opportunity to point out the frantic media.

Water (flooding) kills.  Drowning caused 80% of Harvey deaths.

CONFUSED!
I just opened flag cam and there was nothing. No waves. No wind. No rain. Just a beautiful calm autumn day. Makes me want to go sailing.

This cannot be live. I just saw the flag and it is completely intact. So, what I'm looking at is old footage. Why they would put outdated footage on a live cam, I don't know?

Look at the site now.  There is a note saying the live cam went offline and they are working to troubleshoot the problem.

I would say the problem is the hurricane itself.

Right now they're showing movement at 6mph, with projections of continuing at that speed for the next 30 hours.  That's a lot of rain.

With Harvey, it was not the storm surge.  Storm surge is very predicable.  It was the rain that caused the flooding and most of the deaths.  3/4 of the homes damaged by flooding was outside the FEMA flood zones.  Tropical storms can drop intense rainfall in uneven areas.

When the storm is moving slowly, the never ending rain causes great damage.  Tropical storm Allison never made it to hurricane status, not enough pressure drop for significant storm surge.  It killed 41 people.

In terms of flooding we have a worst case scenario happening right now. It is stuck on the coast. It came ashore this morning at 7am then it went back out to sea. Not too far. So it is just rain, rain, rain, and more rain. Add to that, it has no speed. It is only moving 5mph which is slower than most of us walk.

Everyone was hoping it would make land and then zoom away. It is doing the opposite of that. It is currently squatting like it is taking a vacation at Myrtle Beach. This is going to be bad. Not because of the wind so much, but because of the flooding.

Lots of reports of people on their roof. Imagine that. Camping out on your roof with the kids and grandma in the dark with high winds and rain and the phones are out. Horrible situation. Already some of the people already rescued are saying that it was foolish of them to try to stick it out.

Sad to say I think it can be worse.  There are cases of people going into the attic as the flood waters rise.  And then they keep rising.  Some escape by tearing apart holes through the roof.  Rescue boats and helicopters do not know they are there.

I got around 5 inches from remnants of Gordon earlier this week.  Just a trickle of water in the garage.  But I don't live in a low lying area and/or near a river or creek.  I think if you are higher up or far enough away from a body of water, you might be ok.

https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/2018-09-14-new-bern-north-carolina-rescues-neuse-river

At least 150 people were awaiting rescue in New Bern early Friday morning as Hurricane Florence lashed the North Carolina coast with strong winds and life-threatening storm surge.

As of 5 a.m. Friday, 200 people had already been rescued as waters rose on the Neuse and Trent rivers, according to Colleen Roberts, a city public information officer.

New Bern, a city of about 30,000 residents, saw significant storm surge flooding as the rivers overflowed their banks and swept into town. A flash flood emergency was declared in the area that includes Carteret, Craven, Pamlico and Jones counties Friday morning...

4 Florence-related deaths reported in N.C.; mother, infant killed

Quote
The first deaths attributed to Hurricane Florence were reported Friday in North Carolina as the storm continued to wreak havoc after making landfall earlier in the day.

A mother and her infant were killed in Wilmington, N.C., when a tree fell on their house, the Wilmington Police Department confirmed in a tweet. The father, who was trapped, was freed from the rubble by emergency workers and taken to a local hospital with injuries.

In the next few days, the hurricane will likely dump 18 trillion gallons of rain, as much water as fills the Chesapeake Bay.

I linked that mainly for the headline.  In my part of the country, we not only can comprehend that much water in rain of a single storm, we remember having about twice that.

Weather Channel defends reporter seen in viral Hurricane Florence video
The Hill, Sep 14, 2018

The Weather Channel voiced support for one of its reporters on Friday after a video of him reporting during Hurricane Florence went viral online.  The video clip posted to Twitter appeared to mock the reporter's hurricane coverage, suggesting he was exaggerating the storm's force.

The video shows longtime Weather Channel meteorologist and reporter Mike Seidel as he tried to gain his footing as the storm's winds bore down on him.  "This is about as nasty as its been," Seidel, who was reporting from Wilmington, N.C., says in the clip while bracing against the wind.

The camera then pans over to a pair of figures casually walking on a road behind the reporter.

Not just the national news outlets are guilty of this.   Back during Rita coverage in '05 one of our  local TV beat reporter and his camera man were pulling a "Cantore" acting like he was about to be blown down.  Perfectly timed, a guy walks right behind him walking about a 10 pound dog.  What made it a hoot is the guy bust out laughing right during the event.

Sadly, I bet the station lost this footage and secondly, you didn't see this same fool out in 120 mph winds 8 hours later.

Rescue website, born of Harvey, now brings help for Florence

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/article/Rescue-website-born-of-Harvey-now-brings-help-13231214.php (https://www.houstonchronicle.com/business/article/Rescue-website-born-of-Harvey-now-brings-help-13231214.php)

The emergency management agency for New Bern, N.C., was skeptical when Matthew Marchetti initially called to explain how his crowdsource technology could help rescue people during Hurricane Florence.

Then Marchetti said he was from Houston.

“Oh, oh, so you know the drill,” was the response from North Carolina.

Marchetti’s website, https://crowdsourcerescue.com/ (https://crowdsourcerescue.com/), is now in use in North Carolina as Florence’s powerful storm surge and torrential rains create widespread flooding, matching rescuers to people seeking rescue. The site, refined since Harvey, still relies on two simple buttons: “I can help rescue” and “I need to be rescued.” But it has had a profound impact. During Hurricane Harvey, the site helped connect some 30,000 people needing rescue to 12,000 volunteers with boats, trucks and airboats.

“We went through hell with Harvey. But it was battle-testing,” Marchetti said. “It was battle-testing for moments like these, I think, with larger purpose.”

US Coast Guard member 'removed' after making 'offensive' OK sign on live TV

The U.S. Coast Guard says it “removed” a member from its Hurricane Florence response team Friday after he made an “OK” hand gesture on live TV that the service branch deemed “offensive.”

The unidentified team member was caught looking into the camera and then swiftly making the hand gesture, prompting a backlash on social media.

The hand signal was seen in the background of MSNBC’s live interview with Sector Charleston Commanding Officer Capt. John Reed, who was providing an update on actions taken by the Coast Guard in response to Hurricane Florence.

The article by Fox does a decent job explaining the gesture.  The guy clearly did it intentionally but we don't know why.  I'm just reporting the news.  The US Coast Guard made the decision to remove him from a position in which he might further embarrass the hurricane response team.  If Florence winds up killing lots of poor people, stuff like this gives conspiracy kooks ammo to say "Bush Trump doesn't care about black people."

@Elderberry

Thanks for sharing.  It is fantastic how so many people search for ways to help.

Death toll now up to 6.  Florence is now a tropical storm.  But make no mistake -- the flooding is severe.  This is not just a drizzle.

Now they are measuring rainfall in FEET, not inches.

I hope all who live in States affected by this are ok

That's pretty commendable by Family Dollar, imo. They don't want more chaos. And maybe they think people are in need of their stuff.

I would suspect that the entire inventory is worth less than $10k, Insurance will cover.  Better than the PR battle if people get killed there looting, regardless of whether they needed killin or not.

Florence: Death toll rises to at least 11

8:18 p.m.: Officials say at least 11 dead as a result of Florence

Tropical Storm Florence, which made landfall as a hurricane on Friday, was being blamed for at least 11 deaths as of Saturday night as its torrential rains continued to soak North Carolina and South Carolina during a slow march westward.

On Saturday evening, the North Carolina Office of the Medical Examiner issued a news release saying that it had confirmed seven storm-related deaths, including a 41-year-old woman and her seven-month-old son who died in Wilmington on Friday when a tree fell on their home. The state also listed the deaths of a 78-year-old man in Lenoir County, who died when he was electrocuted; a 77-year-old man in Lenoir County who fell and died due to a cardiac problem while outside checking on dogs during the storm; an 81-year-old man in Wayne County who fell and struck his head while packing to evacuate; and a husband and wife who died in a house fire in Cumberland County.

Local officials have confirmed three additional deaths in North Carolina connected to the storm. The Duplin County Sheriff’s Office said two people died when flash flooding overwhelmed roads on Saturday; in Pender County, officials said that a woman died Friday morning when she was having a heart attack and emergency crews were unable to reach her in time due to downed trees and debris in the road.

In South Carolina, a 61-year-old woman was killed late Friday when the vehicle she was driving struck a tree, according to Gov. Henry McMaster (R), who announced the death at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

The thing that ticks me off, is that Dollar General called the police off and asked them to let the looters have free reign. They probable knew they were insured and every item stolen was money in their pockets. Ticks me off because insurance rates go up when police and businesses let this happen. Screw Dollar General and the police that stood by and didn't do dittly squat.

It figures that looters would go to a Dollar General. They called off the cops because the entire inventory of the entire store was likely between 50 to 100 thousand. This is an invisible amount, less than a margin of error, in the corporation's yearly gross. They just didn't care. They are going through hard times. Let them have it. Consider it a donation to flood relief.

Who goes to a DG for looting. The store is full of cheap crap and junk. If I were going to loot someplace, I would head downtown or to a mall. Get some jewelry or something I can hock or sell afterwards. You can't resale or hock anything from DG. The stuff is worthless junk.

Actually, I suspect they feared their store being burnt to the ground and/or black listed by angry locals if the police were seen defending it. It is the "community" they serve... It is the cost of doing business there.

Are these beach house owners vulnerable to losing their property due to the movement of the vegetation line?

I know here in Texas, the vegetation line is used to determine whether beach land is public land or not.

Who owns NC beaches? Case puts public access in jeopardy

I don't know.  Sell the merchandise for drug money?

Actually, I don't disparage dollar stores.    The Family Dollar near me sells huge bags of cellulose sponges for a buck.  They are all rejects -- cut crooked, weird shapes or some other defect -- but they work just as well as the perfect O'Cello sponges costing a lot more.  I like to stop in that store from time to time.  Never know what I might find that's actually worthwhile.

I happen to share that opinion.  This is "Gibsmedat" on steroids.

"Gibs-Me-Dat" (n.) Annuities, in the form of goods, services, or material (usually welfare checks) given predominately to minorities, in exchange for their tacit agreement to reciprocate by not burning down America's cities.

...The Carolinas were drenched and largely paralyzed Sunday morning as a weakened Tropical Depression Florence slowly ravaged the South, swelling the region’s rivers and leaving the authorities bracing for another day of widespread — and, they feared, potentially catastrophic — rainfall and flooding.

Even as the storm both lost some of its power and sped up, leaving less time for its steady rains to saturate the places in its path, the death toll increased to at least 14, and rivers were rising fast. Forecasters warned that flooding, already frighteningly common this weekend, was virtually certain to worsen within hours....

@Applewood

Do the pets get reunited with their owners or are they abandoned?

I know a few people who adopted pets from Katrina

From what I understand, shelters away from the worst storm damage are taking in the  lost pets temporarily.  They hope to reunite them with their owners eventually.  I suppose if they aren't claimed within a certain period of time, these pets will be put up for adoption.

In the meantime, the shelters taking in these displaced pets are overcrowded.  So, many of their longer-term residents are being sent to other shelters.  I believe the local shelter here is taking in some of those residents so the shelters closer to the hurricane damage can in turn take in the newly displaced pets.

Sanford Dam fails due to rising waters from Florence

BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WECT) -

At 7:10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, the Sanford Dam failed due to the immense influx of water from former Hurricane Florence.

The City of Boiling Spring Lakes posted on Facebook that The Big Lake, Pine Lake and North Lake were all draining at a rapid pace.

Mayor Pro-tem Steven Barger told WECT reporters that the city had attempted a controlled breach to prevent the dam breaking, but they couldn't reach it in time.

Officials in Gaston County, N.C., said a 3-month-old was killed Sunday when a tree fell through the family’s single-wide mobile home. The infant and the mother were taken to a hospital, where the baby died, said Maj. Jamie McConnell with Gaston County EMS.

At least 11 people have died as a result of the storm in North Carolina, and six in South Carolina.

Now the deluge has moved inland, where it will continue all night.  The soil is clay, so the vast majority will have to drain through the already flooded Cape Fear, Lumber, Neuse, and Pee Dee rivers.  It could take a while before things improve down east.

Yes.  Moving north too.  Some rain in West Virginia now, crossing into PA later this morning.

But the local forecast in western PA calls for maybe an inch or two of rain at the most.  Nothing like what the Carolinas got and are still getting.

Lumberton volunteers try and fail to save city from Lumber River flooding

LUMBERTON, N.C. - An effort by volunteers to save parts of their city from the ravages of Tropical Depression Florence ended in heartbreak Sunday.

A set of temporary levees built to save the south and west sides of Lumberton from being swamped failed when water piling up on the north side of the Lumber River compromised the structures and poured through.

Volunteers and members of the National Guard had hoped to prevent the misery and destruction experienced two years ago when deadly Hurricane Matthew tore through the eastern North Carolina city.

They piled 5,000 sandbags along with gravel and chunks of asphalt ripped from the parking lot of a nearby church.

But by 3 p.m. one of the raised walls broke. Later that evening onlookers cleared out quickly as the main levee started to give. Most moved to a closed section of Interstate 95 to watch.

Lumberton has received 2 feet of rain in the last two days pushing the Lumber River up to 25 feet, nearly a foot higher than it reached during Matthew.

Yes, he failed to take "climate change" seriously enough to take steps to prevent it, thus hurricanes.

It should be noted that no previous president throughout U.S. history, including the sainted Obama, was able to prevent hurricanes, either. None of them even tried. The WashPost is most aggrieved at James K. Polk, as he was especially unconcerned about the whole matter. He said, "What the hell? Do I believe human beings can change the weather? I am not an idiot, sir!"

Florence death toll rises to 23 as flooding continues
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45544424 (https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-45544424)

...At a news conference on Monday, Gov Cooper said "catastrophic flooding and tornados are still claiming lives and property" across the state.

"For many parts of north Carolina the danger is still immediate," he said. "Some areas have not seen the worst flooding yet. This is a monumental disaster for our state."

In Wilmington, with its population of about 120,000, some 400 people have had to be rescued from flood waters, and most of the city remains without power.

The governor said that 23 truckloads of supplies were able to make it into Wilmington this morning, though officials are uncertain whether the single road into the city will remain functional as rivers continue to flood.

The National Weather Service has warned of at least two further days of possible flash flooding in the area before conditions are forecast to improve....

Pollution fears: Swollen rivers swamp ash dumps, hog farms

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Flooded rivers from Florence's drenching rains have swamped coal ash dumps and low-lying hog farms, raising pollution concerns as the swollen waterways approach their crests Monday.

North Carolina environmental regulators say several open-air manure pits at hog farms have failed, spilling pollution. State officials also were monitoring the breach of a Duke Energy coal ash landfill near Wilmington.

Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Michael Regan said Monday that the earthen dam at one hog lagoon in Duplin County had been breached. There were also seven reports of lagoon levels going over their tops or being inundated in Jones and Pender counties.

Regan said state investigators will visit the sites as conditions allow. The large pits at hog farms hold feces and urine from the animals to be sprayed on nearby fields.

The Associated Press published photos of a hog farm outside Trenton on Sunday with long metal buildings ringed by dark water. Satellite photos of the same farm taken before the storm show the location of a hog waste pit completely submerged under floodwaters in the AP photos.

The N.C. Pork Council, an industry trade group, emphasized Monday that the hog waste pits flooded by Florence represented a comparatively small number when compared with the total number statewide.

Hurricane Florence updates: 32 dead, including 25 dead in North Carolina

Thirty-two people have died as a result of Florence with 25 of those deaths in North Carolina, the Associated Press reports.

On Sunday night, the body of a 1-year-old was found in Union County. His mother had escaped her car with him after the vehicle was washed away by floodwaters, but then she lost her grip and the boy was swept away, authorities said.

Governor Roy Cooper confirmed all the North Carolina deaths in a press conference Monday. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety released a break-down of deaths per county.

On Sunday afternoon, Gaston County commissioner Tracy Philbeck said a 3-month-old child was killed when a tree fell on their home.

In South Carolina, officials are investigating after a man drove into standing water on Pond Branch Road near Gilbert and died.

A husband and wife who died in a Fayetteville house fire are now counted among the dead from Florence.

Two deaths were reported in Duplin County on Saturday afternoon.

The Duplin County Sheriff's Office did not say exactly how the pair died; however, they said their deaths were related to flash flooding and swift water on roadways.

People who try to drive through standing water ought to be shot.  Where I live, there are roads that flood every time there are a few drops of rain.  And every time, some dummy tries to drive through a flood and invariably has to be rescued.  Even I know (I don't drive) there is no way of knowing how deep that large puddle of water really is.

With Wilmington still mostly an island surrounded by Hurricane Florence’s floodwaters and people waiting for hours for handouts of necessities like food, North Carolina’s governor is pleading with thousands of evacuees to be patient and not return home just yet.

“I know it was hard to leave home, and it is even harder to wait and wonder whether you even have a home to go back to,” Gov. Roy Cooper said as officials began distributing supplies to residents of Wilmington, population 120,000.

The death toll rose to at least 37 in three states Tuesday, with 27 fatalities in North Carolina, as Florence’s remnants went in two directions: Water flowed downstream toward the Carolina coast, and storms raced through the Northeast, where flash floods hit New Hampshire and New York state .

Cooper warned that the flooding set off by as much as 3 feet (1 meter) of rain from Florence is far from over and will get worse in places....
