Title: TBR Thon
Post by: mystery-ak on January 12, 2021, 07:21:38 pm
I hate asking this but I would like to do a thon.

TBR has money to pay for our up-coming bills but we will have no cash in case of emergencies.

I fear the commies in charge will start taking down forums like TBR through their servers.

If that happens we have no cash in reserve to find a new server.

So please help out if you can.

For those who have recently donated please do not donate again.

If you can't afford it, don't worry about it...I completely understand. happy77

If you want to send a check pm me for out PO Box

All others please click the bulldog puppies at the bottom of the forum page

Thank you all

Nancy

@mystery-ak - Fortunately I still had my PayPal account, but I am planning on closing it due to this:

https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/paypal-says-it-blocked-christian-crowdfunding-site-givesendgo-after-it-raised-funds-for-people-attending-capitol-riots (https://www.foxbusiness.com/money/paypal-says-it-blocked-christian-crowdfunding-site-givesendgo-after-it-raised-funds-for-people-attending-capitol-riots)

You may want to consider adding one or more of the alternatives (Venmo is one I have used, but I think there are others). It took just a few minutes to sign up for Venmo, and it's very similar to PayPal.

I donated months ago, but I have absolutely no problem donating again.  This forum has been a lifeline for me for various different reasons.

I fear for the future and feel that we have each other in here at least to communicate and to vent our feelings.  I pray that this forum remains.

I'll pm you for your P.O. Box.

Thank you Myst for all that you do.

Now is the time to give. With Twitter and FaceBook now hostile territory and Parler offline, this IS your safe social media.

With flaming gold balls!  I hate to ask...last time I mentioned why we need it I heard a million purses snap shut.  There were server costs, and I think it reminded everybody of bad TOS memories.  We've been on a tight shoestring ever since.

What's going on with Parler and Gab is real cause for alarm, vis servers.  That's our biggest cost, and if we have an emergency move from our current one it will cost a lot in expert labor, to settle technical issues we've had for a long time.

In honesty, we need more than we've received in the past.

Ha ha, that reminded me of my responses to the FR 'thons, where I vowed to walk along the road and pick up cans. Whatever cash they brought in at the recycling center - along with the lint in my pocket - was what would be sent to JR. Needless to say, I'm much more willing to donate to TBR!

There really isn't a goal..Right now there is enough to pay TBR's expenses for a year.

not counting the PO BOX, domain names, dlvr.t..which I pay

@Cyber Liberty and I are worried about losing our Server and having no funds to find/get a new one.

That is our fear.

I have always had thons once a year just for our operating costs. I was reluctant to do this but the only choice I would have would be to just close it down which I don't want to do.

There really isn't a goal..Right now there is enough to pay TBR's expenses for a year.

not counting the PO BOX, domain names, dlvr.t..which I pay

@Cyber Liberty and I are worried about losing our Server and having no funds to find/get a new one.

Maybe Cyber should post to this.

Exactly. I fear the costs of tech support as much as I do getting thown off MyHosting.

We'd need to put down cash for both the cost of a server contract plus a guru to grease the wheel.

Back in the day, you needed a can opener.

Damn that brought up some memories, my dad used buy Rheingold Ale but in bottles and when I came home from work about around 11:30 I'd make a sandwich, swipe some of Rheingold and watch Carson. Those were good times, beats the crap out of now.

That is our fear.

I have always had thons once a year just for our operating costs. I was reluctant to do this but the only choice I would have would be to just close it down which I don't want to do.

I see that it would be a tragedy not to be able to communicate in here with those that I've gotten to know now and consider my friends for the past 6 years.   8888crybaby

Please folks if you can, donate.  Lot's of registered members/Briefers in here....  so please donate for the cause (free speech) and for a really great forum that's above all the rest!!!

Was your can opener used for cracking oil cans too? Because ours sure was! Adds a certain tang to the beer with that oil on the rim... I don't know if it acted similarly for the oil cans.

My wife loves bulldogs. I've been trying to convince her to get one so that my furry buddy (pictured above) has a friend to play with. But so far no luck.

Last night was a rough night for the dog. big wind storm here. Power kept flickering, which trips our UPSes, which makes a noise that scares the dog. Poor guy was shaking he was so amped up. I took him for a short walk and then ended up sitting with him from 12:30 - 02:30 before he finally settled down. Gave him some CBD oil around 1:30, which is I think is why he finally calmed down at 2:30

We have a leather IKEA sofa upstairs (which never is sat upon anymore). About 20 years ago, my mother won a drawing for $10,000 in merchandise at the Pittsburgh store. I got a couch and a recliner, my sister got kitchen cabinets and my brother got bedroom furniture. We're the people who never win anything, so it was quite a pleasant surprise.

66 1/2 is the minimim age (for my time frame) to get full benefits.

There are all kind of articles which give details of pro's /cons' of taking it early.  Supposedly 66 1/2 is the sweet spot for someone in decent health, and normal life expectancy. Then you got to work the details in how in fits in tax planning.  Also remember it gets reduced if you are a higher earner. (investiments)

No not waiting.... we did the math.  Taking the money now I'll actually come out ahead in money until I get into my mid 80's.  We don't need the SS money now so I'm investing most of it and using the rest for fun stuff.

Yep, but you also have to factor in upcoming economic factors too.  I went through a real complicated set  up spreadsheet, with what I thought would be the trend on interest rates, rate of return of equities invested from Year 1, Year 2, Year 3, etc. , Tax implcations of incremental increase income, and lastly evaulate core investments on ROE basis.  Last look...  optimum for me was age 68.33.  Of course my parameters probably need to updated to reflect a Biden induced inflationary risk.

And all this money printing to finance COVID relief spending has to be causing some massive inflation.

Hiya @Lando Lincoln ! The big move to the North Woods! I remember that was coming. Sane folks do that sort of thing in the summertime around here...

So hows the new digs? Settling in alright?

And the bet got covered... @corbe threw the last one down. Though the way this thread is going, I may do another.

@mystery-ak @roamer_1

Yes, sane people move to the northwoods in summer.  That's the catch, lol!  It is driving me nuts, actually.  My replacement at work finally showed up from Nevada.  But weather is a masterful opponent the moment plans are made.

I've been away more than less for the last 2 months.  I've got a new girlfriend and even though the shines not wore off that yet, I've missed yall, tremendously.

Now that the Trump Era is over I've noticed a lot of my old Friends, never forgotten, coming back to TBR.  I've missed them also.

Do you have a monetary target, and if so how much more do we need to hit it?

Yes I do...although this is the most we have ever raised I am not sure it is enough if anything happens....only time will tell...

Looking at the problems Parler is having finding a server and getting back online scares me...I just hope we will be ignored as a little fish in a big pond.

Can you PM me how much more we need? I can help a bit more.

Also, hopefully it will never come to this, but if you need any help in migration, I am happy to volunteer some time.

Ok, sounds good.

I wish there were some way to extract money from Twitter or FaceBook and send it to TBR. I told my wife that my last contribution here was going to be financed by my not seeing and purchasing dog or firearm-related products from ads on FaceBook  wink777

If Push comes to Shove, @mystery-ak There are obviously some here that have the desire AND the means to help you ensure your TBR Dream stays alive.  Unfortunately, I just paid my property taxes and am quite lite right now but will continue soon.

   You're the Best.

You explained that the contingency funds were dangerously LOW (2 months or less) with no Capital for Emergencies which may lurk just around the corner.  I appreciate your forward thinking in keeping this place available for your extended Family of Briefers to meet and chat about any damn thing we like.

That's right but we are in better shape...now we have enough cash on hand to pay our bills for a year...whew!

...and some left over for an emergency...which is hard to predict naturally.

There is one thing we have going for us: we have moderators to keep the troublemakers at bay.

Parler, even though (from what I saw) the majority of posts were mainstream conservative thought, left itself open to bad actors with its lack of moderation. I get why they did, but it was a weakness that Big Tech exploited.

@corbe, I get you. I’ve been unplugging from all media in the past week, ten days because it’s just too upsetting. It’s not anything else, I just sometimes fear I’m going to loose my sanity since I can go literally weeks without seeing anyone now, except on tv.
