9 November 1965. Nine days before I turned ten.
At about 5:20 or so, I still remember . . . I was sitting at the dining room table finishing a surprisingly small load of fifth-grade homework. My kid brother was playing with our dog. My father was watching the 5:00 newscast on local WPIX (Channel 11) on the small TV set we kept in the dining room. (We were news hounds in our household, even though nobody then had any inkling I'd actually become a professional journalist in due course---and my father didn't live to see it, he was already dying of cancer and would be gone the following June.) My mother was just about to serve dinner. (If I remember right, it was roast beef.)
Then the lights in the house just faded out kind of slowly. I went to the front of the house and looked as far down the street as I could see, then I went outside. Our block was dark. So was the next block, where one of my father's cousins lived. We called my father's favourite aunt on the westmost side of town and she was dark, too.
From there, the most nerve-wracking part of it was waiting to hear about my maternal grandparents---they both worked in Manhattan and took the subway home to the Bronx, and the phones weren't gone just yet.(My paternal grandparents also lived in the north Bronx but Grandpa Walter retired from the New York Police Department the same year I was hatched.) We were petrified that they might be stuck on a train between stations and, since we flipped the radio on, we already knew it was a cluster-you-know-what in the city. About 20 minutes after the lights went out Grandma Diana and Grandpa Morris called us, they'd made it back to the north Bronx safe and sound and had barely walked into their apartment when the lights went out.
For the rest of the night we had candles lit all around the house, we huddled in my parents' bedroom, we had our roast beef in there on TV trays, and when not staying glued to the radio there the four of us were playing Monopoly by candlelight on my parents' bed. I think we were all asleep somehow by about 10:30. We got our power back at five the next morning.
And to think the whole thing started with a failed protective relay setting in a power station on the Canadian side (Queenston, Ontario) of Niagara Falls . . .

We only get one harvest up here, and it is about to commence... Brasicas are about ready, Maters will be in the next 2 weeks, corn, not much after that... Gearing up for all the processing, and case goods and flats coming in at the same time... August BURIES me. But, the pantry and the root cellar will be full to bursting, and I can get back to fishing, and the real work: Hunting. :laugh:

I usually shoot 1 or 2 a year for dog food. I have had a couple encounters where I was charged by one. One 200+# critter I downed 15 yards away, the other one chased me back onto the bed of my truck. IN both cases, quite an adrenalin rush.

That's a point I wouldn't know inherently.... But it only makes it worse...
As to the falling through... It comes pretty natural to be on the ice around here. It's a flat place that takes the easy way... A lot of times, the only place to go at all is on the ice, and some places the only time you can haul stuff in easy is on the ice.
And it's touchy business... Rivers and creeks, with swift water underneath... While it has to be slow enough for ice to form, the water underneath is still flowing enough that if you fall through you are not under the hole for very long. And you will play hell getting back to it too.
Normally you have a staff in your hand - similar to a shovel in a deep backhoe trench... You know you have a half second to get that shovel sideways across the top of that trench if it starts to cave in on you... Same thing. If your feet leave, the staff goes sideways in front of you and hopefully you catch it across your belly and only fall half way in... Hopefully you are pulling a polk and don't have a pack on... which is normal if you have a polk, even if you do have a pack, you put it on the polk on the crossings... And probably the most of your coats too..
I have likely gone through the ice a good dozen times... Mostly trapping beaver, but hunting too... Only a few of those were really bad and one damn near killed me. The real bad part is living through it. Once I fell in (not through the ice) in swift water, had to lose my pack and coat and snowshoes... Damn near killed me... And there I am, sitting on the bank, well below freezing, sopping wet, in shirt sleeves, with nothing but a folding pocket knife.
That was some learning, right there. That was way worse than every time (but one) when I fell through the ice. By the time I drug my sorry butt out of those woods and out to help I wished I had just died.
