Pelosi, Schumer push back on new Trump demand for wall funding: 'We hope he learned his lesson'
By Brett Samuels - 03/10/19 01:33 PM EDT

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) indicated on Sunday that President Trump's reported plan to ask for $8.6 billion in the fiscal 2020 budget to fund a wall along the southern border was a non-starter.

"President Trump hurt millions of Americans and caused widespread chaos when he recklessly shut down the government to try to get his expensive and ineffective wall, which he promised would be paid for by Mexico," the Democratic leaders said in a statement.

"Congress refused to fund his wall and he was forced to admit defeat and reopen the government.  The same thing will repeat itself if he tries this again," they added.  "We hope he learned his lesson."

Pelosi and Schumer instead suggested that Trump put money that could be used on the border wall toward education and workforce development programs.

The statement served as a preview for what is likely to be a contentious negotiation on the president's budget proposal, which is due to be released on Monday.

A White House official confirms Trump will ask for $8.6 billion for a border wall, and an additional $3.6 billion in military construction funds to pay back monies that the administration hopes will be spent this year that the President redirected by executive authority.

Somehow, I don’t think they’ll fall for the trick of replacing the $3.6B, without constraints, just so it can be redirected again.

This is one of the things about Trump I really like. He is relentless.

Trump is going to make building the wall the issue no matter what.

Relentlessly stupid, perhaps.

He should be like Mitch. Mitch knows what to do.

Mitch McConnell is almost singlehandedly remaking the federal judiciary, with very young judges.  Trump, for his part, has apparently agreed to do what he’s told to do in this matter.  My guess is it has more to do with McConnell and company preselecting the candidates and then giving Trump a “choice” he can’t screw up since all of them were already chosen by McConnell.

Trump meanwhile, not so much accomplished.

Yep, after 35 years in the senate (16 of them in senate leadership) Mitch just suddenly decided to remake the judiciary.

Why not.

Believe whatever you want to; that doesn’t change the facts.

It’s also not a surprise given that, in his earlier years, he wouldn’t have had much ability to affect the judiciary no matter how much he wanted to, and during the Obama years, no ability either, since Obama wasn’t about to nominate whomever McConnell might have recommended.

Unless, of course, magic is involved.

When the history books are finally written, McConnell will be treated as a much more consequential political leader than the barely competent president he had to work with.

I will and no, it won’t.

It’s extremely unlikely future generations of young constitutionalists will be singing Mitch McConnell’s praises. Sadly I’m quite certain trump will receive the credit.

Too bad he wasn't so relentless when he had a full majority. Thinking Nancy and Chuck are going to change their minds is ridiculous.  Trying the same thing and expecting a different outcome is just a waste of time and more smoke and mirrors to make the American public think that he's actually doing something.
