A few months ago I believe I asked for prayer for my brother, who was facing a hearing on his two DUIs. He eventually entered a plea, and yesterday was his sentencing date. He didn't show up for court, so I'm sure there's a bench warrant out. My sister and I think he was under the impression that last Tuesday (7/23) was the sentencing date, which is why he hied to the detox unit of the hospital the previous Friday. He thought by being in the hospital he'd avoid going to jail. Of course, he got out of detox 7/24 and promptly resumed drinking.

His lawyer says he's never seen anyone so completely possessed by alcohol. We believe he's going to kill himself or someone else (yes, he drives drunk) unless he's put in jail soon.

I don't know exactly what to ask here, but please pray for him! Thanks.

Prayers to you and yours.  That's a heavy burden.

Mostly for my sister. She and her husband are my brother's landlords. He's completely destroyed their rental property and made their lives miserable.

He did nothing they didn't allow.

What some people never seem to understand is that you can NOT be nice to addicts because they serve a different master than you and I. Yes,it is hard to turn away from a family member or someone you love, but you MUST do it or THEIR disease will destroy you and your loved ones.

You can NOT save an addict from their addiction. They are the only ones that can do that.

Precisely. Been there dealt with that, and there is no easy way.
Don't allow them to shuffle blame off on you.
Every time they use their favorite drug, it is a choice. A choice they have to decide not to make, or decide to do, and there is little you can do about it.

Their first love is __________ (fill in the blank with whatever thing(s) they are consumed with), and you are a distant second, even if you are their parent, Child sibling, or spouse. You aren't even in the same tier until they decide to break it off with their drug of choice.
We gave up on the idea of a comfortable retirement when we chose to raise a couple of grandkids rather than let family go to foster homes indefinitely. I don't regret that, but it costs us all who clean up the wreckage others leave behind.

@mountaineer , prayers up from one who has been there and dealt with that.

How difficult this is for all of you!  I will pray for his recovery, and peace for the rest of you.

Thanks, all. My sister believes he got picked up on the warrant today, because he left the house this morning and hasn't been back yet, and his pattern has been to leave in the morning, come back for a while, and then head to the bar for the rest of the day.
-----------------------
Monday UPDATE: She was wrong. Apparently he headed out on his beer run the other day but must have had a medical incident, i.e., passed out, because he called her Sunday to say he was in the hospital with low calcium (I looked it up, can be linked to cirrhosis). I assume the cops will take him to the pokey upon his discharge. His car probably will be impounded for quite a while, and he really can't retrieve it because the registration is expired (and I doubt he has insurance). Talk about digging an even deeper hole for yourself! My sister's blood pressure is soaring, no matter how much I tell her not to take his problems on herself.

Another update: sister's atty today encouraged her to call 911 and say brother is a threat to himself and others because a) he's driving drunk on a daily basis; and b) he said something to the effect of every day thinking about killing himself (good thing I have possession of our father's USN pistol from WWII).

Cops picked him up this afternoon and he's now at the jail. His Jeep is still in impound, but he had gotten our late mother's old Volvo started and now it's still parked at the bar where the cops took him into custody. I told my sister to get it, if she has a key, before it gets stolen.  **nononono*

Anyway, he's safer in jail than not in jail (I know, Jeffrey Epstein might disagree if he could), so I'm grateful for that. Thanks again for all your prayers.
