How Katie was cast to play Tom Cruise's wife

On Friday, TomKat jumped the couch. Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise after 5 1/2 years of marriage. Best-selling biographer Andrew Morton, author of "Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography" (St. Martins Press), explains why it was a true Hollywood romance -- because from the beginning, Holmes was playing a part.

When Tom Cruise turned 42, his best friend, controversial Scientology leader David Miscavige, threw a lavish birthday party, costing an estimated $300,000, on board the church’s cruise ship.

He flew in singers, dancers and even Tom’s favorite sushi chefs for the bash, where the actor was serenaded with the medley of songs from his box-office hits.

“It’s the best birthday ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, and I mean ever,” he said, with typical understatement.

Tuesday, Tom’s 50th birthday, will lack some “evers.” He will be in his trailer in the wilds of Iceland, where he is filming the aptly named “Oblivion.” Instead of the expected cards and presents from Katie Holmes, she sent him a confetti of legal papers and correspondence marking the end of their five-year marriage.

KATIE PLOTTED ESCAPE FOR WEEKS

At least one thing he knows he’ll get is a call from Miscavige, to congratulate and console. Wives may come and go. Scientology is forever.

Holmes’ bombshell, in the midst of his international publicity campaign for “Rock of Ages,” in which he stars as an aging singer, shows exquisite if cruel timing. Tom has admitted he was “blindsided” by her decision, just as Nicole Kidman, his second wife, was stunned when he abruptly decided to end their 10-year marriage even though she was pregnant.

As a leading member of a religion founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, Cruise doesn’t believe in karma. But Katie’s carefully executed escape plan means that, deliberately or not, she is getting one back for the sisterhood.

When he and Kidman divorced, Cruise effectively gained custody of their adopted children, Connor and Isabella. This time, however, Cruise has no such guarantees.

Holmes, presumably with the advice of her lawyer father, Martin Holmes, is playing hardball. She has hired a legal pit bull, New York lawyer Allan E. Mayefsky, who has been involved in several vicious splits, including the divorce of model Christie Brinkley. She wants full custody of Suri, the 6-year-old daughter Cruise dotes on.

Suri’s future education — whether in the rituals of Scientology, like her step-brother and -sister, or a more conventional avenue — will be a critical concern...

Tommy and little David Miscavige should just tie the knot wherever it's legal, and get it over with.

Katie's been plotting her escape from the clutches of the cult, it appears. Good for her.

Don’t cry for Katie — this was all part of her plan.

Katie Holmes plotted divorcing Tom Cruise for weeks, even renting a secret Chelsea hideaway to escape with daughter Suri.

Two building sources and a resident told The Post they’ve spotted Holmes, 33, in a posh 19-story Seventh Avenue building, where rents range from $4,000 to $25,000 a month and celebs secure under-the-radar homes.

“I’ve seen her every day for three weeks. It’s been almost a month now,” said one building source.

Her new nest is just a few train stops from the couple’s West Village townhouse and East 13th Street apartment.

Holmes, 33, should feel at home here: The new apartment near West 25th Street is a refuge for other celebrity tenants, including Christina Ricci, who lived there many years. Lady Gaga recently tried to snag a pad there, sources said.

The “Dawson’s Creek” actress quietly filed divorce papers in New York on Thursday as Cruise, 49, was in Iceland filming the flick “Oblivion.” She’s requesting sole custody of the couple’s 6-year-old daughter.

Cruise, who was blind-sided by the split, is reportedly preparing for a bitter custody war and will try to move the proceedings to California, sources said.

Just two weeks earlier, the couple and Suri played the part of happy family, dining out in Reykjavik, Iceland and lavishing their daughter with attention.

But sources say that under the surface, the marriage was frosty. In fact, one Hollywood insider said the marriage and child was all part of a rumored $20 million contract.

“The deal was they’d have an ‘heir and a spare.’ But she’s walking away before they had a second child.”

The source said that Holmes was “smart enough” to receive a substantial amount of cash up front before marrying the “Mission: Impossible” star.

By marrying Cruise, the source added, “Katie thought that it would really help with her career. And that she’d be Nicole Kidman. But then she was locked down at home, just playing baby mama.”

Holmes certainly won’t be hurting for money: She’s reportedly set to gain $3 million for each year of their union.

Yup.  The piece states she only had to give him 5 years, and she gave him 5 and a half.

Katie Holmes says Scientology is tailing her

Sources close to Katie Holmes tell TMZ in an exclusive on the website that she believes Scientology views her as a threat over her divorce filing against Tom Cruise and “has put a team on her tail.”

And the celebrity magazine seems to agree:

Quote
This does not appear to be the mind of a paranoid person. People who have photographed Katie multiple times tell TMZ there have been several “mysterious” men and vehicles around Katie’s apartment and following her when she’s out.

TMZ says it “put in a call to Scientology” but has yet to hear back.

This is going to get very messy.

Scientology is going to be dragged into court and all of its "doctrine" will be put on display for the public to see.

I wonder what strings the L. Ron Hubbard men in gray are pulling to hold Travolta's marriage together?

Actress Katie Holmes and her 6-year-old daughter were lying low Sunday in their new Manhattan apartment as a creepy crew reportedly from the Church of Scientology watched their every move.

Holmes and her child, Suri, have stayed out of sight since she blindsided hubby Tom Cruise by filing for divorce in New York.

But five burly and menacing men parked outside of Holmes’ Seventh Ave. building in Chelsea made no attempts to hide Sunday.

The mystery men sat inside a white Cadillac Escalade bearing Tennessee license plates with the engine idling and the AC running. All casually dressed and 40 to 50 years old, they refused to identify themselves or even roll down their windows when a reporter from the Daily News knocked.

The men only got out of their SUV to photograph reporters interviewing neighbors in front of the building between 24th and 25th Sts.

Citing unnamed sources, TMZ.com reported Sunday that the men in the Escalade were sent by the Church of Scientology to shadow Holmes and her daughter.

Scientology officials denied the TMZ report Sunday.

“There is no truth whatsoever to the TMZ.com report (or any other report) that the Church of Scientology has sent anyone to follow or surveil Katie Holmes,” Gary Soter, a lawyer for the Church of Scientology International, told The News in an email.

Holmes fears Scientologist big wigs now see her as a threat to their organization because she is dumping their celebrity Top Gun.

The Daily News reported Sunday that Holmes had concocted an elaborate escape-from-Cruise plan that included renting her Chelsea pad weeks before filing for divorce on Thursday and asking for sole custody of Suri.

The papers were filed a week before Cruise’s 50th birthday.

Frankly after what he did to Nicole Kidman and then basically took their kids away from her, I am thrilled to see Katie being the dumper rather than the dumpee...

Katie's Cruise kidnap fear as 'Scientology' goons eye building
By C.J. SULLIVAN , IAN MOHR and LARRY CELONA
Last Updated: 5:37 AM, July 2, 2012

She’s a prisoner in her own home.

Katie Holmes fears she can’t take one step without a Scientology goon following her every move in a heavy- handed intimidation attempt, multiple sources close to the actress told The Post yesterday.

The pretty actress last night was holed up in her Chelsea pad — terrified that soon-to-be-ex-hubby Tom Cruise might kidnap their little girl, law-enforcement sources said. Holmes told another building resident of her abduction fear — and that neighbor called police on Friday, sources said. But without Holmes phoning in the report herself — and Cruise known to be 2,600 miles away shooting a movie in Iceland — police couldn’t take any action.

Managers at Holmes’ plush Seventh Avenue building, though, have been put on alert for Cruise or any strangers who might want to get inside, the sources said.

Holmes, who filed for divorce from superstar Scientologist actor Cruise last week, knew this was coming, the sources said.

“Katie saw all the pressure. They [Scientologists] are professionals at pressuring people to be quiet,” said a friend of the actress after her bombshell divorce filing in Manhattan last week. “That’s why she did this [filed for divorce] in secret.”

A team of beefy armed men parked themselves in a white Cadillac Escalade outside Holmes’ place all day yesterday, snapping pictures of people outside the building and demanding to know who they were. Cops finally pulled up in a marked NYPD squad car behind the SUV and checked out its Tennessee license plates. The officers said they were acting on complaints of “suspicious activity in a white Escalade” but did not elaborate. They spent about 15 minutes eyeing the SUV before leaving. At least two of the five men sitting in the SUV were clearly packing heat. When asked who they worked for, one wisecracked: “We’re waiting for a bus.”

A Holmes rep said the mystery men weren’t with the actress.

Cruise’s team denied the guards were working for the actor. A Scientology lawyer told TMZ the church is not tailing Holmes.

The actress and her daughter, Suri, were not seen in public all day yesterday.

Now that Suri, is 6, Holmes reportedly wants to take her as far away from Cruise’s Scientology pals as possible.

Holmes, who was born in Ohio and raised Catholic, is seeking full custody so that Suri can be shielded from alleged Scientology brainwashing, sources said.

“Suri is at the age where they are going to start educating her in Scientology centers and indoctrinating her into the religion,” Holmes’ pal said.

“Katie did convert when she and Tom were married, but she didn’t take to [Scientology]. Behind closed doors, and when the private planes and the red carpets were gone, she didn’t like it. And she decided she does not want that for Suri. ”

Holmes had been planning her marital escape for weeks, surreptitiously moving with Suri into the Chelsea apartment while Cruise was out of the country.

The box-office superstar Cruise was spotted working on the set of his movie “Oblivion” yesterday in Iceland.

Holmes told her neighbor she was afraid he’d charter a plane to get back to New York.

“[Holmes] did not want that much influence and power and control [from the Church of Scientology] over her child and didn’t want to go through with” her education in it, according to Holmes’ friend.

“She was not going to let that happen to her daughter. Katie does not want them making all the decisions for her child,” the source said.

Cruise’s first two wives, Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, reportedly also had problems with the church’s hold on their then-husband.  Another former Hollywood wife, actress-photographer Carmen Llewellyn, who was married to “My Name is Earl” actor Jason Lee — a Scientologist — has said the reprisals are swift and brutal against spouses who leave mates who are in the church.

“I lost my manager and my career,” Llewellyn said in a published interview after her split from Lee. “People didn’t return my phone calls.

“Scientologists followed me down the street. They took pictures of my kids. They’d stake out my house, wait until we came our and follow us. They came looking for me to scare me.”

Cruise, who turns 50 tomorrow, and Holmes, 33, were married on Nov. 18, 2006, in a lavish Italian ceremony.

Holmes reportedly signed a prenuptial deal that will give her $3 million for each year of marriage, meaning she could walk away with a cool $15 million — and a mansion in Santa Barbara County, Calif.

From the Daily Mail (U.K.):

Katie Holmes's fears that daughter Suri was set to be inducted into a hardcore Scientology organisation were the driving force behind the end of her marriage to Hollywood star Tom Cruise.

The actress was allegedly convinced husband Tom Cruise was planning to send Suri, six, away to Sea Organisation -  an association of Scientologists established in 1968 by L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction writer and founder of Scientology.

Sea Org, as it is known, is where the highest levels of Scientology are taught and children as young as five can be sent to live there - without their parents. ...

One of the principle reasons behind the split, say Holmes’s circle, has been her growing scepticism towards Scientology, which was founded by Fifties sci-fi writer L. Ron Hubbard, who taught his disciples that humans are descended from space aliens called Thetans.

To begin with, Katie played the dutiful convert. The couple had a lavish Scientology wedding in Rome in November 2006 at which the church’s leader David Miscavige was Cruise’s best man — he was even said to have accompanied the couple on honeymoon.

Six months earlier, Katie had given birth to Suri amid rumours she had gone through a ‘silent birth’ (Scientologists insist mothers should not scream or shout out in pain during labour in order for babies to be born in a calm environment).  And for anyone who imagines such tales are merely colourful myths, Kelly Preston, the wife of fellow celebrity Scientologist John Travolta, publicly admits she went through a silent birth with their son Benjamin in 2010.  ...
