The U.S. Navy has officially retired the USS Bonhomme Richard.

A July 2020 fire severely damaged the amphibious assault ship.

The Navy will tow the Bonhomme Richard's burned-out hull to Texas, where it will be scrapped.

The U.S. Navy officially released a fire-ravaged warship from duty last week.

Navy officials decommissioned USS Bonhomme Richard—the victim of a catastrophic fire that burned for 4 straight days last summer—in a small ceremony in San Diego on April 14. The Navy decided the estimated $2.5 billion cost to repair the Bonhomme Richard and return her to service was too great for the aging vessel. Now, the Navy is opting to scrap her instead.
