West Point hit by worst cheating scandal in decades, will punish dozens of cadets

It’s the biggest cheating scandal at the military school since 1976.

Story at a glance:

73 cadets are thought to have cheated.
51 cadets got held back a year for cheating and some who were expelled could reapply through other means.
The school experienced a cheating scandal back in 1976.

Seventy-three cadets are accused of cheating on exams in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point — a school cheating scandal that is taking place where honor matters the most.

COVID-19 has made remote learning a challenge for some. However, for others, it is apparently making it too easy for cadets to be dishonest on calculus exams, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The U.S. Air Force Academy thinks 249 cadets cheated last spring semester, the Journal reported. The Naval Academy is still determining how many students are involved in cheating during a sophomore-level physics final exam in the fall.

With an honor code that says, “will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do,” some publications are calling the scandal the biggest step back for the oldest military academy.

The quality of the applicant pool for our military academies seems to have declined dramatically in recent years, sadly.

  • I don't believe in Trump anymore, he's an illusion
But why should these Cadets be punished for doing what their commander in thief has been doing his whole life? Standards set, standards met.

West Point expels eight cadets and holds 51 back a year after 73 were accused of taking part in the military academy's biggest cheating scandal in more than four decades

The cadets were accused of cheating on an online freshman calculus exam in May while students were studying remotely because of coronavirus
An investigation was launched after instructors noticed irregularities in answers
West Point said that of the 73 cases investigated by the cadet honor committee, six cadets resigned during the investigation, four were acquitted by their peers
Two cases were dropped due to insufficient evidence, officials said
Most of the cadets, 51, were 'turned back' one year after admitting to cheating
Cadets at the officer training academy on the Hudson River are bound by an honor code that they 'will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do'
In 1976, 153 upperclassmen resigned or were expelled for cheating on exam

The Math Exam involved Integral Calculus, mandatory for the Civil Engineering
Degree at West Point and at least 90% of the cheaters were Football Players.
A conclusion: BRAINS AND FOOTBALL HAVE ZERO IN COMMON!!!
A deduction:  Long past time we abandoned our infantile infatuation w/Football,
College and/or Professional; as it's an activity packed w/the brainless, a large
percentage of whom refuse to behave according to the norms of civilized culture.

The long gray line ain't what it used to be!
"I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."
