Breaking News: Constitutional Carry Scheduled for the Floor

TSRA Email Andi Turner Legislative Director 4/13/2021

House Bill 1927 by Representative Schaefer is scheduled for the floor of The House for full debate on Thursday at 10. You'll recall that this bills DOES NOT eradicate the LTC system People who qualify to carry as an LTC (if the person isn't a felon, drug addict, fugitive from justice, etc) would be allowed to carry without a permit. Mostly, the people supporting these bills already carry, so the bills are more about rights being restored. There are now 20 other states as of today that have passed some form of Permitless carry. It's high time Texas joined them!

On the same day, likely after the Constitutional Carry debate, HB 1500 by Representative Hefner will be debated on the floor. This is the bill that will prevent any Governor of Texas from infringing on our 2A rights during a disaster or state of emergency. This is not about the current Governor but rather seeks to make sure if we get any pro gun-control Governor's in Texas, they cannot disable our rights when we need them the most!

If you want to watch (or listen) to the LIVE proceedings, you can click here at 10 AM on Thursday!

Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Texas House gives initial approval to "constitutional carry," which would allow people to carry a gun without a license

House Bill 1927 would nix the requirement for Texas residents to obtain a license to carry handguns if they’re not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a gun. Texans under current state law must generally be licensed to carry handguns, either openly or concealed.

The Texas House on Thursday gave an initial OK to a bill that would allow handguns to be carried without a permit, marking a win for gun rights activists who have for years pushed the measure at the Legislature but a blow to El Paso Democrats who have been fighting for gun safety measures since the 2019 massacre in their hometown.

The 84-56 vote came after several hours of some of the most emotionally charged debate yet this legislative session, with Democrats pleading to their colleagues to reconsider their position on the legislation.

House Bill 1927, spearheaded by state Rep. Matt Schaefer, R-Tyler, would nix the requirement for Texas residents to obtain a license to carry handguns if they’re not prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a gun. Texans under current state law must generally be licensed to carry handguns, either openly or concealed.

Constitutional Carry Moves to the Texas Senate

Will Texans soon be able to carry a firearm without a license to carry? That's a question that the Texas Senate will soon have to answer, and all eyes are on the Senate and Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick.

On Friday, State Senator Charles Perry was on my KFYO show to discuss a pro-life city ordinance coming up for vote on May 1st. At the end of the interview, I asked Perry about the chances of Constitutional Carry passing in the Texas Senate. Perry said that it hasn't been that he or Patrick had been against this type of legislation in the past, just that there hadn't been the push like we see now.

Still, there are rumors that the votes aren't there in the Texas Senate for Constitutional Carry, or permit-less carry, whichever you want to call it. My hope is that Senate will see how easy the vote passed in the House and they will move on it quickly.

Good for Rep Schaefer to follow through here.

Unfortunately, he is dead set against permitting Texas citizens to vote whether they wish to pursue secession by placing the question on the November ballot.

So he is not for all freedoms, just ones he likes.
