Ossoff: I Don’t Support Boycotting GA over Law That ‘Restricts Access’ ‘for Black Voters’ – Boycotts are ‘Why They Need to Repeal’ Law

Ian Hanchett 12 Apr 2021

On Monday’s broadcast of CNN’s “OutFront,” Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) said that he doesn’t support any boycotts of the state of Georgia over its election law that “restricts access to the ballot for black voters” and that the law being bad for business is “why they need to repeal this restrictive voting law that they passed.”

Ossoff said, “I don’t support any boycott of the state of Georgia. In fact, the economic growth that’s been so extraordinary in the last twenty years is a big part of what’s driven political progress. Georgia welcomes jobs and investment. And I don’t think that moves to boycott the state are constructive. But it’s also a fact that bad public policy is bad for business, that legislation that politicizes election administration and restricts access to the ballot for black voters and Democratic-leaning voters is driving business away from our state. And this should be a very clear signal to our Republican state legislature that they’re playing with fire when they abuse their authority to try to rig the rules of election administration to gain a partisan edge, and it’s why they need to repeal this restrictive voting law that they passed.”

GOP Rep. Carter: Attacks on GA Voting Law ‘Nothing More Than Lies and Misinformation’ Spread by Biden, Warnock, Abrams

Jeff Poor12 Apr 20210

Monday, during an appearance on the Fox Business Network, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) defended the Georgia Assembly’s legislative efforts to shore up election integrity.

He contended Democrats, including failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, President Joe Biden and Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), were persuading corporate CEOs to oppose the law with “lies and misinformation.”

“There is nothing in this law that’s restricting voting,” he said. “In fact, it does just the opposite. It expands voting and makes it easier to vote, whereas it makes it harder to cheat. And if these CEOs would not listen to the misinformation and the lies that’s being spread by Stacey Abrams, by Joe Biden and by Raphael Warnock, then they would understand if they would just read the law itself, they would see that it actually does expand voting.”

“We actually added an extra Saturday into the early voting period and gave the counties options to add two Sundays,” Carter continued. “Now, most of these CEOs are sitting in their ivory towers in New York state. And if you compare New York state with Georgia, you will see that Georgia has much better voting regulations. In New York State, they only have ten days of early voting. We have up to 19 days of early voting. In New York State, you have to have an excuse to vote absentee. In Georgia, you don’t.”

“All of this is just ridiculous,” he added. “It’s nothing more than lies and misinformation being spread by Joe Biden, by the Democrats, Raphael Warnock, Stacey Abrams. And then they say, oh, no, you’re going to take the All-Star Game out of Georgia. Oh, how horrible, yes. Well, it’s because of your misinformation and lies that they are doing that. Thank you very much.”

There is no law that restricts access for black voters.  Not since Jimmy Carter and Lester Maddox are no longer office.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

This piqued my interest in learning something... What did Jimmy Carter and Lester Maddox do to the voting processes back in the day?

@Hoodat

No gotcha question here, honestly want to know. Thanks for your time.

Both supported segregation.  Carter was on a local school board opposing the construction of a new black high school so closed to the white high school.  And Lester Maddox is of course Lester Maddox.

Carter backed Maddox for governor in 1966, a race that Republican Bo Callaway actually won.  But since Callaway did not win a majority, the legislature (with Carter's backing) chose Maddox as Georgia's governor.  Maddox received less than 4% of the black vote.  But a second Democrat in the race was able to syphon off enough votes from Callaway to prevent him from the majority he needed.

In 1970, Carter became the Dem nominee with Lester Maddox as his Lt. Governor.  Carter cozied up to old-school segregationists to ensure his victory.

Segregation and voting rights go hand in hand.  The goal back then was to suppress the black vote.  And Carter knew that just as well as every other Democrat politician at the time.

Just checking, but does anyone know the specific language of the bill that says "blacks can't vote"?

The GOP is not the party leadership.  The GOP is the party MEMBERSHIP.   The members need to kick the leaders out if they leaders are going the wrong way.  No coddling allowed.

Liberals are basing it on the assumption that black people are too stupid to have photo IDs.
