New Mexico Families Keep Alive Memories of Soldiers' Bataan Death March

Margaret Garcia plans to walk the trails and sidewalks of her Albuquerque neighborhood this month, carrying a picture of her dad.

She won't be the only one. Across New Mexico over the next week or so — even in the throes of a pandemic — families of the soldiers who endured the Bataan Death March will continue a similar tradition, one that recognizes bravery, loss and remembrance.

This event is organized, at least in part, as a marathon one can hike or run, https://bataanmarch.com/ .

Many soldiers died during the Death March. Many died in POW camps. Some died on Hell Ships while being transported to Japan. Some were slave laborers in mines in Japan. Some were "guests" of Unit 731. The Death March was the first circle of a Hell: some descended; some "got off" on one of the circles; too few emerged from the other side.
