Aides shrug off questions about 2024, but with a list of advisory board members that reads like backers, former Vice President Mike Pence's new political group looks like a bid to position himself as Trumpism’s heir apparent and for a White House run.

Advancing American Freedom’s advisory board includes Trump administration alumni such as Kellyanne Conway, former Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, and Trade Representative Bob Lighthizer, along with luminaries of the conservative movement such as Jim DeMint and David McIntosh.

“It’s going to promote the policies of the last four years and defend them from attack from the radical left and distortions from the media,” an aide said.

But as possible candidates begin jockeying for the Republican nomination for 2024, it also marks Pence’s return to the political limelight after keeping a low profile since a pro-Trump mob marched through the U.S. Capitol chanting “Hang Mike Pence.”

Again, I have always and often wondered why Trump selected Pence to be his VP in the first place. I would love to know; perhaps more pieces of the puzzle would fall into place and other questions that I still have would be answered.

Reince Priebus felt Trump needed a swamp creature (my words) to balance the ticket or Trump wouldn't get any support, at all, from the RNC/GOP.

AND......,wth is he thinking to announce he is running now when it looks like Trump will be running again in 2024?

Do his handlers really think "Mr Green Jeans" that he would accomplish anything other than suck enough votes away from Trump to guarantee that neither would win?

I SUSPECT it had to do with the contrasting personalities. Trump's advisors understood he is the type that throws kerosene on fires,and Pence is the type that calls the fire department.

They were looking for a "balanced personality ticket" to keep from scaring the more RINO voters.

To the best of my recollection:

Trump, despite his scorched-earth primary campaign, still had zero credibility among the right. Before NeverTrump got hijacked by the Bill Kristols and such, pretty much anyone who actually stood for conservatism wanted Cruz to win.

So they ran out the oldest trick in the book: find a guy to put on the ticket that addressed Trump's weaknesses. Pence was a sitting governor and former Congressman, well-respected in the conservative movement at the time, and a solid Christian family man--everything that Trump wasn't. I pretty clearly remember people at my church saying they'd vote for the Trump/Pence ticket solely because they thought Trump would be so bad that he'd get thrown out of office and they'd get Pence, and that either was preferable to Clinton. So it worked.

If Trump runs in 2024, Pence will NOT be the running mate.  And if Trump does not run in 2024, there is a long list of folks that will be picked over Pence.  And who knows, maybe Jeb will make another stab at it.  His desire has not been vacated, I am sure.

I suspect I would like Mike Pence if I knew him personally. But I've never been excited about him as a candidate. I just don't see him generating the excitement needed to get people out to the polls.
