Wait, what? Wasn’t one of the aims of Operation Warp Speed to have companies mass-produce these vaccine candidates ahead of approval in case they succeeded in stopping COVID-19? Johnson & Johnson’s application for an emergency-use authorization will finally get attention this week, and the nation has anticipated a big influx of a late third vaccine to accelerate mass vaccination programs.

And it will … “by June, or so,” Anthony Fauci tells CNN’s Alisyn Camerota this morning, or maybe even July:

While I have not found any specific time schedule for the 100M doses that will be under purchase contract when J & J receives EUA, J & J's stated goal is to manufacture and deliver 1B doses worldwide in 2021. There is no way in Hades J & J doesn't have a very large stockpile ready to be shipped.

IMO, Fauci is lying to diminish an accomplishment and sustain a state of panic. This lie is big enough that I would not be surprised if J & J responds with info about what they can and will do if approved later this week. Or maybe J & J will include their near-term shipping plans in their announcement that they received EUA.

It's not in his hands, though the 3 week delay between J & J applying for Emergency use authorization and the FDA's industry advisory committee meeting to discuss and vote on the EUA isn't impressive. Once approved, distribution is largely out of Federal hands (unless the DoD gets involved with the logistics) and will be whatever J & J manufactured beforehand, its distribution logistics, and its ongoing production.

Some states have done well in their part of distribution - setting up vaccination locations and getting people vaccinated. Other states, many - not all - Dem-governed have pooed the screwch on distribution. Fauci may be trying to cloud/confuse expectations for a significant increase in vaccine doses distributed so as to give some cover for the states that are doing badly.

The Biden administration said last week that, if it is authorized, there are probably single-digit millions of doses available in coming weeks. On Tuesday, Johnson & Johnson's Dr. Richard Nettles will say that the plan "is to begin shipping immediately upon emergency use authorization, and deliver enough single-doses by the end of March to enable the vaccination of more than 20 million Americans," according to prepared remarks to be delivered before a House Committee on Energy & Commerce subcommittee.

So in 4 1/2 weeks J & J estimates they will deliver 20M doses ... ~4.5M doses a week. I don't know how Fauci defines "front-loaded", but that's a pretty fast roll-out and probably a fair amount of that is already produced and in vials ready to ship.

Biden claimed that Trump didn't order enough vaccines. In the real world, Trump ordered:

* 200 million doses from Pfizer; cannot be used on youths and children under age 16;

* 200 million doses from Moderna; cannot be used on youths and children under age 18;

* 100 million doses from Johnson & Johnson, contingent on receiving EUA, which looks very likely to happen; J & J's is a single dose vaccine; cannot be used on youths and children under age 18.

That is approximately enough double doses of Pfizer and Moderna for every American who is allowed to receive the vaccine, plus another 100M doses of J & J's single dose vaccine. Trump ordered more than enough, when J & J's purchase contract is included. Novavax looks to be a couple months out, but that's another 100M dose purchase.

Though Trump obviously hoped he would be President, his and his team's work set Biden up for success ... if Biden & crew don't F it up.

Sanofi has entered into an agreement with Janssen Pharmaceutical NV and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., two of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson, under which Sanofi will support manufacturing of Janssen´s COVID-19 vaccine in order to address the COVID-19 pandemic and supply needs. Janssen has submitted an application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requesting Emergency Use Authorization for its single-dose Janssen COVID-19 vaccine candidate and an application for conditional marketing authorisation to the European Medicines Agency. 

Once authorized, Sanofi will provide Johnson & Johnson access to the established infrastructure and expertise of its vaccine manufacturing plant in Marcy l’Etoile, France, to formulate and fill vials of Janssen’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate in 2021, at a rate of approximately 12 million doses per month.

Sanofi Pasteur is a French company, and the manufacture would happen in France. This agreement represents an overall increase in the supply of J & J's vaccine, hence lessening the competition for what J & J produces in the us.

So, when I posted this thread the difference between how many vaccine doses had been delivered to states and how many doses states had injected was in the neighborhood of 20 million - 20 million doses sitting in storage among the 50 states plus territories awaiting use. I've been watching the states' distribution train wrecks (some) and successes (some) using https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccinations . As of this morning:

Total Vaccine Doses
Delivered ---- 154,199,235

Administered ---- 118,313,818

In three weeks that ~20 million doses sitting in storage has grown to almost 36 million doses sitting in storage. I hope some states' bureaucrats are familiar with FIFO inventory management!

WRT Fauci's blather, J&J, with help from Pfizer and Moderna, proved Fauci a clue-free liar. Novavax and maybe AstraZeneca cometh.
